Call your representative to urge a YES vote on the House floor!

After seven long years, S. 150 is finally headed to the House floor! The Senate already passed the bill in February. Earlier this month, the legislation passed the 3M Committee, so we need everyone to reach out to their reps for this next crucial stage.

It’s time to double down our efforts to make sure the bill gets past the finish line.

Here’s what we need from you:

• Call your state rep in support of the South Carolina Compassionate Care Act, S. 150. (Our call script and pointers make it easy.)
• Spread the word to friends and family on social media, and rally them to call their reps.

Too many have fought for years, and we are in the final stretch to full House passage. Our opponents will be doing everything in their power to defeat this historic legislation — including proposing 1,000 amendments to try to slow down the process. So, we must do everything in our power to make sure S. 150 gets final passage in the South Carolina House.

Email your lawmakers today and ask them to legalize cannabis for adults this year!

Today, two separate cannabis legalization bills were passed in committee!

HB 371, which would simply legalize possession of up to one ounce of cannabis for adults 21 and older, was approved by the House Health and Human Development Committee.

HB 372, which would regulate and tax cannabis sales for adults in Delaware, was approved by the House Revenue and Finance Committee.

Please reach out to your lawmakers today and urge them to end cannabis prohibition in Delaware this year!

Next, HB 372 must be considered by the House Appropriations Committee before heading to the House floor. Because it has no fees or taxes, HB 371 should head straight to the floor. It only requires a simple majority of 21 votes to clear the House, while HB 372 will require a supermajority of 25 votes.

By passing both HB 371 and HB 372 this year, Delaware can reduce the number of cannabis-related arrests and police interactions, free up law enforcement resources to focus on more serious crimes, and generate a new revenue source for the state.

A strong majority of Delawareans support legalization, but the legislature must act to bring this important policy change to Delaware. Ask your lawmakers to stand with a majority of Delawareans and legalize cannabis for adults this year.

You can urge your state reps to vote “no” here.

Last week, New Hampshire’s bill to legalize cannabis possession for adults and create a state-run monopoly narrowly passed out of the Ways & Means Committee (12-10). Now, it’s headed to the House floor again. While the committee made some amendments to the bill, it did not address our biggest concerns — HB 1598 would continue to re-criminalize edibles, and it doesn’t even include a Plan B in the likely event that state-run stores fail to get up and running.

States can license and regulate private cannabis businesses, but they cannot direct their own workers to break federal law by selling cannabis. Doing so creates a “direct and positive conflict” and is preempted.

As an organization committed to legalization, it feels odd to oppose a legalization bill. But New Hampshire has several other bills pending that would actually work, and the House already passed one to legalize possession and cultivation earlier this year (HB 629).

We know that cannabis policy reform has a long history of failed attempts, whether by accident or by design. In the 1970s, 1980s, and even in the past decade, dozens of states passed medical cannabis bills that failed to become operational because they weren’t written in a way that considered federal policy. These approaches create false hope and delayed progress on workable bills. We don’t want to see the same thing happen with legalization.

Now is the time to let your legislators know you support medical cannabis!

Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee advanced  HB 136 — the medical cannabis bill — in a 15-1 vote. It now heads to the House floor, which has passed similar bills in past years. 

The issue has never gotten a vote in the Senate, but Senate Majority Leader Damon Thayer has stated that he will not get “in the way” if a medical cannabis bill has sufficient Republican support for a vote in the Senate. It’s crucial that you engage with your legislators. HB 136 is a solid bipartisan bill sponsored by Rep. Jason Nemes (R), who has been a champion for medical cannabis for years. 

Please write your state legislators in support of medical cannabis! HB 136 is the best bet to move cannabis reform forward in 2022. Time is running out for this year’s session, so your voice is critical.

Be sure to get out and vote if you live in the 4th House district! 

A special election is being held on Saturday, March 5 to fill a vacancy to replace former Representative Gerald Brady in the 4th House District (Wilmington).

The outcome of the special election is critical in determining the fate of legalization. HB 305 — a bill to legalize, regulate, and tax cannabis for adults — is currently waiting to be considered by the full House of Representatives. The winner of the special election will be a key vote on the bill on the House floor.   

Democratic candidate Bud Freel has pledged to support HB 305, while Republican candidate Ted Kittila has said he does not plan to vote for the bill.

Early voting is already underway and will continue through Thursday, March 3, 2022 at the Carvel State Office Building from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Today, Delaware’s House Health and Human Development Committee voted 10-4 in favor of HB 305, a bill to legalize, tax, and regulate cannabis for adults 21 and older. It now moves to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration before heading to the House floor.

The bill will need a three-fifths supermajority (25 votes) to pass the House, so it’s very important your representatives hear from you.
