comprehensive medical cannabis program, Georgia, medical cannabis states

Georgia becomes the 41st comprehensive medical cannabis state!

We have great news from the Peachtree State!

On May 12, Governor Brian Kemp signed SB 220 into law. This victory belongs to all the patients and advocates who pushed this bill across the finish line.

Georgia has long had one of the most restrictive medical cannabis programs in the country. For years, MPP and our partners have fought to make it more accessible to the patients who need it most. SB 220 is the most significant expansion of that program to date.

Here's what this new law does for Georgia patients:

  • Removes the 5% THC cap, and instead has a cap of 12,000 milligrams of THC
  • Adds lupus as a qualifying condition
  • Removes the "late stage" requirement from a range of covered conditions — meaning patients no longer have to wait until their illness is at its worst to qualify for relief
  • Allows the vaporization of cannabis oil and cannabis flower, giving patients more options for how they use their medicine

This has been a long road. None of it happened without the patients who shared their stories, the advocates who showed up session after session, and supporters like you who have refused to give up.

Georgia still has further to go toward a better cannabis policy in general — and we'll keep pushing. But today, we celebrate a hard-earned win for real people whose lives will be better because of it.

Thank you for making this possible.
