NH: Governor’s greenhouse veto overridden!

In a rare rebuke of Gov. Kelly Ayotte (R), Granite State legislators overrode her veto of SB468. The legislation will allow medical cannabis cultivators to utilize greenhouses to grow medical cannabis. By using less electricity in favor of sunlight, supporters believe that the cost to produce medical cannabis will be slashed, therefore lowering costs to patients. 

The governor stated her opposition to any expansion of cannabis cultivation in New Hampshire. In a bipartisan vote, the state Senate voted 16-8 to override the governor. These votes running up to the gubernatorial election on November 3 highlight the differences between the legislature and the governor on cannabis issues. 

New Hampshire remains the last state in New England to criminalize sales of adult-use cannabis still. Her opponent for governor, Cinde Warmington, slammed the governor:

“This bill would have made medical cannabis more affordable and more accessible to Granite Staters who really need it, and she vetoed it,”  Warmington said. “But honestly, this is what we’ve come to expect from Kelly Ayotte.”

The November 3 election will most likely decide if New Hampshire will be able to move forward with legalization in the coming two years. It is doubtful that the legislature has the needed votes to override a gubernatorial veto of an adult-use bill.
