The clock is ticking on New Mexico’s legalization bill — act now!

Ask your state lawmakers to support SB 115 to legalize cannabis for adult use!

With just eight days left in 2020’s short legislative session, the New Mexico Legislature is considering SB 115, which would legalize, tax, and regulate cannabis for adults.

Last year, the House approved a legalization bill, but it was defeated in the Senate Finance Committee. Make sure SB 115 doesn’t meet a similar fate: Please take a moment to email your state senator and representative and ask them to support SB 115!

The Senate Public Affairs Committee approved the bill (4-3), and it must now clear both the Senate Judiciary Committee and Senate Finance Committee before heading to the Senate floor.

SB 115 would allow adults 21 and older to possess up to two ounces of cannabis flower and purchase cannabis products from licensed retailers. The bill also provides for automatic expungements of past cannabis convictions.

Although Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) supports legalization and has included it in her 2020 legislative agenda, SB 115 must clear the legislature to make it to her desk. Keep the pressure up by contacting your lawmakers and asking them to support SB 115!

It is past time the Land of Enchantment end cannabis prohibition and replace it with sensible regulation. A poll commissioned by the governor-appointed marijuana working group found that three out of four voters in the state support legalizing cannabis for adult use.

After you email your legislators, please forward this message to your friends and family in New Mexico and encourage them to do the same.

N.H.: House committee advances legalization bill in 13-7 Vote!

Email your state legislators today and ask for their support!

Yesterday, the N.H. House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee voted 13-7 to pass HB 1648, the bill to legalize adults’ possession and limited cultivation of cannabis. As the Concord Monitor reported, this is a stronger vote from the committee than last year, when it passed a legalization bill 10-9.

Next, the bill will be voted on by the full House of Representatives in early February. We need to continue building support in order to keep the momentum going into the Senate. Please email your state legislators today and take other actions in support of HB 1648!

You can read a summary of HB 1648 here.

N.H.: Public hearing on new legalization bill set for January 23!

To prepare, join advocates for a workshop in Manchester on Tuesday, January 21 — also, email your state legislators today and ask for their support!

The state legislature convened last week, and a public hearing has already been scheduled for the new legalization bill, HB 1648, on Thursday, January 23. This would be a great day for you to visit the state house and voice your support!

Here are the details:

WHAT: Public hearing on HB 1648

WHEN: Advocates will gather for a press conference at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 23. The hearing will begin at 1:30 p.m. Legislators will testify first, followed by members of the public. Please note that the hearing may last several hours.

WHERE: Legislative Office Building, 33 North State Street, Concord (behind the capitol building) — Press conference in lobby, hearing in Rooms 210-212

WHO: All supporters of HB 1648 are welcome to sign in and/or testify in support. You can RSVP here on Facebook.

Since the Senate and governor have already made it clear that they’re not ready to support legalizing and regulating cannabis sales in 2020, we have decided to refocus efforts in support of this bill, which would simply legalize possession and limited home cultivation for adults 21 and older — similar to Vermont’s legalization law. You can read a summary of HB 1648 here.

To help supporters prepare for the hearing, our allies at Americans for Prosperity have offered to host an advocacy workshop at their Manchester office on Tuesday, January 21, and we would love to have you join us! Here are the details:

WHAT: Cannabis Legalization Advocacy Workshop

WHEN: Tuesday, January 21, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

WHERE: Americans for Prosperity, 340 Granite Street (first floor), Manchester

WHO: Supporters of HB 1648

You can RSVP here at the Facebook event page.

Please mark your calendars and share this message with your friends and family. If you can’t make it to the workshop but are interested in testifying at the hearing, please email me directly, and I will send you more information.

N.H. Legalization bill passes House, advances to Senate!

If you live in N.H., please email your state senator today and urge them to support HB 481.

For the first time in its history, the N.H. House of Representatives has advanced a cannabis legalization bill to the state Senate. HB 481 passed today in a 200-163 vote, after having received a favorable (14-6) recommendation last week from the Ways and Means Committee. The bill will soon be scheduled for a public hearing in the state Senate.

It is very important that New Hampshire’s 24 state senators hear from their constituents in support of HB 481. Please email your senator today! At the same time, you can find out how your representatives voted and follow up by sending them a quick email.

Since Gov. Chris Sununu is expected to veto the bill if it reaches his desk, it may be necessary for legislators to override his veto in order for HB 481 to become law. Please follow up with your state representatives and urge your state senator to support HB 481 by sending them a quick email today.

You can read a summary of the bill, as amended by the House, here.

New Jersey legalization bill put on hold

If you live in New Jersey, ask your lawmakers if they support the legalization bill.

Yesterday, Gov. Phil Murphy and leaders in the legislature decided not to hold a vote on their marijuana legalization bill. It was determined that they did not have enough votes to pass the bill, and they chose to table the bill until they do.

While this is a disappointing setback, let's make sure it is only a temporary one. As Gov. Murphy said, "Justice may be delayed, but justice will not be denied."

Please take a second to email your lawmakers to ask them if they support the legalization bill.

If they don't support the bill, please consider reaching out further and asking for a meeting. If lawmakers don't hear from their constituents, they won't change their minds. If you are interested in setting up a meeting with your lawmaker, please email me at dboyer@mpp.org, and I can help facilitate that and arm you with the best resources in support of ending marijuana prohibition.

So please, email your lawmakers and then spread the word by forwarding this email to friends and family members.

N.H.: Key House committee passes legalization bill!

We will need two-thirds majorities to overcome Gov. Sununu's veto threat. If you live in New Hampshire, call your state representatives today!

New Hampshire's legalization bill, HB 481, passed the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee today in a 10-9 vote. Although the House of Representatives has voted to pass legalization bills on two previous occasions (2014 and 2018), this is the first time any New Hampshire legislative committee has ever recommended in favor of legalization.

Next, the bill will be scheduled for a vote in the full House of Representatives. Please call your state representative(s) today and encourage them to support HB 481, the bill to legalize, regulate, and tax cannabis.

You can read a summary of the bill here, and talking points, poll numbers, studies, and other resources in support of HB 481 are available on this page.

If you are able to speak with legislators and learn where they stand, it would be very helpful if you could share the details with me via email.

After you call your state legislators, please forward this message to your family and friends!
