The vague “public nuisance” language carries a misdemeanor penalty with up to four months in jail. Singling out cannabis smoke as the only smell with its own nuisance standard is absurd, especially given that cannabis is a medicine for many people.

A concerning bill in Connecticut that would reinstate cannabis odor as a legal justification for police stops and vehicle searches recently passed unanimously out of the Public Safety and Security Committee.

Just last week Connecticut became the 19th state to legalize cannabis for adult use. Today, the law officially goes into effect.
