New White House Petition: We Demand a Vapid, Condescending, Meaningless, Politically Safe Response to This Petition

Nov 08, 2011 , , , , , , , ,

Since the beginning of the White House’s “We the People” petition program, questions and requests about marijuana policy have dominated the site. Last week, the Obama administration lumped all of those detailed, nuanced questions together and answered them all by parroting the same old rhetoric. Very little in the way of an actual response was given to the questions, other than this: marijuana is dangerous and should remain illegal, but more research should be done on its medical properties.

This response is disingenuous, given the federal government’s repeated interference in medical marijuana research, including a recent denial of a study on the effects of marijuana on post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans. It is also not an appropriate answer to the myriad policy issues addressed in the petitions.

Luckily, one Jon G from Michigan has started a petition that is sure to get an appropriate reply from the Obama White House:

Since these petitions are ignored apart from an occasional patronizing and inane political statement amounting to nothing more than a condescending pat on the head, we the signers would enjoy having the illusion of success. Since no other outcome to this process seems possible, we demand that the White House immediately assign a junior staffer to compose a tame and vapid response to this petition, and never attempt to take any meaningful action on this or any other issue. We would also like a cookie.

  1. I would be already dead from ethanol poisoning if not for Medical Cannabis. GWPRF.PK is the way to invest. Go, go, go U.S.A.

  2. Everything must change. Nothing remains the same. All it will take is for a politician to realize that it was his/her tired, federal induced, negative position on marijuana that lost the race for them. Marijuana users are perhaps the largest untapped voter bloc in the nation. Millions upon millions of us are sort of getting tired of being arrested, fined, jailed, the forfeiting of our homes and properties and being forced into rehab while you all delight in your happy hour martini while feeling smug that you are winning the war on drugs. Drink up America and sleep well knowing you taught someone a lesson today by taking their home. That’ll teach ’em!

  3. The White House’s Petitions are a joke. More feel good smoke and mirror stuff designed to make us all feel like we are all really a part of the process while they laugh and snicker at us from behind the curtain. The Wizard will respond to your questions now…yes, marijuana is dangerous, it kills thousands of people everyday in America, next question.

  4. I live in the state of MD and sometimes in the State of Confusion! I have a rare, terminal cancer, Leiomyosarcoma. Most of my nausea meds do not work. I started smoking Medical Marijuana. It helps my nausea, pain, nerves, appetite and my well~being.
From getting radiation and 3 surgeries on my abdomen, I now have chronic pain and my intestines are all fused, matted and tethered together. My one surgeon said he will never let anyone do abdominal surgery on me again. Now with that said, NOT ONE of my many SURGEONS, ONCOLOGIST, PRIMARY OR GASTROENTEROLOGIST’S will sign a consent form for me to smoke MEDICAL MARIJUANA! What is one to do in my condition if I get caught, arrested and thrown in jail? I’m a 52 year old women who loved to work and now, well I’m on disability, NOT BY CHOICE!
I am going to type up a ‘credit card’ size paper that states my name, address, type of cancer, treatments (CHEMO) and EVERYONE OF MY DOCTOR’S NAMES ON IT WITH THE UNIVERSITY HOSP THEY WORK AT AND THEIR PHONE NUMBERS. And if this isn’t taken in consideration if I get arrested, at least I will have all their phone numbers to call and BAIL ME OUT!

  5. God please I’m sick and need marijuana. I’ve been trying for a very long time to get aproval for it, But insted i got all kinds of legal problems I can’t afford. It seems rediculase growing medicane can be againest the law in a free country. As the saying goes (there are no more hopplessly inslaved then those who think there free).

  6. This is a major reflection of what president Obama is all about on all of his policies. People are serious but he’s not. He just acts like it in his speech; hoping the people are stupid enough to give him a second chance.

  7. I was kicked off the internet for saying bad things about a governer, I wonder what would happen if a said how I felt about this wonderful piece of work?

  8. The feds say they will not bother med patients in a med state, then they turn around and take the cash and the cannabis, and if an unarmed pot smoker kets killed it is because cannabis is illegal, not because of a murder committed by some trigger happy dea agent or narco cop. Everyone knows it is better for big industry to keep all form of the cannabis plant against the law. Billions of dollers are made by government by keeping it that way. But things may change one day. Just two days ago it was proven that cannabis DOES IN FACT prevent cancercells from starting and does in fact kill living cancer cells. Off topic i saw Mr. Simmons from the band kiss and he said if he were pres he would execute all drug dealers. I guess he would have to execute most poloticians and all big pharma employees.

  9. The concept and practice of using marijuana as medicine has been around for over 3000 years. Not one death due to marijuana use has ever been recorded. Up until 1937 hundreds of medicines whose base ingredient was marijuana were approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration, (FDA). The FDA was created in the wake of the 1914 Harrison Act which began the regulation of drugs and the patent medicines made from them. The 1937 Marijuana Tax Stamp Act, which made marijuana a Federal crime, was designed to prohibit the possession and use of marijuana in such a way that you had to break the law in order to comply with it. The law required one to possess the marijuana to get a tax stamp for it, but if you are in possession of the marijuana , you have already broken the law. This hated law was declared unconstitutional in 1970. In it’s wake was created the 1970 Controlled Substances Act. This bill is also flawed and probably unconstitutional. The bill requires the Drug Czar to misinform the citizens about any drug listed as Schedule 1 in the arbitrary rating schedule of drugs and their dangers. This rating system is questionable because synthetic copies of schedule 1 drugs are listed as schedule 2 and can be prescribed by a doctor. Most of these ‘copies’ are less well tolerated than the drugs they are designed to replace.
There is something inherently wrong about a law that requires such a high ranking public official to mislead the citizens. This has led to such ridiculous scenes as the Drug Czar, Mr. Gil Kerlikowske, standing in San Francisco after fifteen years of medical marijuana in California, and proclaiming that marijuana is dangerous and has no medical value. Does anyone wonder why the Federal Government is considered unreliable when it comes to drug facts? The government’s credibility has been destroyed by it’s inability to tell the truth when it comes to drugs or the success or failure of current drug policy.
As long as this requirement to mislead the citizens is in place, we will not be able to have the honest discussion needed to for us to move forward on the issues of drugs and drug law. Currently the American Medical Association is calling for marijuana to be rescheduled to allow for it’s use as medicine. Sixteen states and Washington DC have medical marijuana laws and polling nationwide is 82% in favor of medical marijuana. The only thing standing in the way are the unrealistic and untrue pronouncements of the Drug Czar and his fellow prohibitionists.
Congress should pass an amendment to the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 that requires the Drug Czar to tell the whole truth about drugs and cease this ridiculous charade. Until then the propaganda and misinformation continue unabated.
