George Soros Donates $1 Million to Prop 19 Campaign

Oct 26, 2010 , , , ,

Today’s just-announced $1 million donation from philanthropist George Soros should help keep the Yes on 19 TV ad running through Election Day, as well as provide a tremendous boost to crucial get-out-the-vote efforts.

From Soros’s op-ed in today’s Wall Street Journal:

Like many parents and grandparents, I am worried about young people getting into trouble with marijuana and other drugs. The best solution, however, is honest and effective drug education. One survey after another indicates that teenagers have better access than most adults to marijuana—and often other drugs as well—and find it easier to buy marijuana than alcohol. Legalizing marijuana may make it easier for adults to buy marijuana, but it can hardly make it any more accessible to young people. I’d much rather invest in effective education than ineffective arrest and incarceration. […]

In many respects, of course, Proposition 19 already is a winner no matter what happens on Election Day. The mere fact of its being on the ballot has elevated and legitimized public discourse about marijuana and marijuana policy in ways I could not have imagined a year ago.

  1. Mr george Soros you are a good man indeed. I wish there were alot more people as compationate as you my friend. Thank you very much for your donation. You picked a great cause to help ty.

  2. THANK GOODNESS! Now, if this money has enough legs to blanket the airwaves, maybe Prop19 can smother the ridiculous prohibitionist lies, and get the 50% + 1 that we need to change the world!

  3. Thank you Mr. Soros for your generous contribution. This campaign really needs a tv ad. Most of all Thank you for your common sense.

  4. While I dont usually comend Mr Soros and his progressive politics.

I must say, I am impressed with his willingness to stand up and lend a voice and funds to the movement.

The elites dont listen to us pee’ons but they do acknowledge when one of their own takes the podeum. Today we finally had one on take the podeum for our side.

    Thank you Mr. Soros.

  5. Thanks Soros!

    Cali,

The rest of the country has it’s eyes on you. We have high hopes in this upcoming Nov 2nd, but it will also be important for Cali citizens and cannabis users to lead by example especially if Prop 19 passes.

Just be plain responsible about it so that the prohibitionist can not point and say ‘Look, California legalized and now we are dealing with such, and such, and such.’ Don’t give politicians and prohibitionists in other areas of the country fuel for their drug war.

    Thanks, Peace, and Good Luck!

  6. Usually about this time of the year, Im fired up and excited about Halloween, but this year Im like FUCK HALLOWEEN! The real treat would be a big win for Prop. 19! My gut just tells me this is it! I have a strong feeling that on Nov. 2nd, we’ll get a huge turnout. Im not even a Californian, I live in NC! But I still feel really connected to this cause. It REALLY sucks that I can’t vote in this election. Being in the “bible belt”, there will be another ice age before marijuana reforms here! lol. Thank you so much Mr. Soros. This campaign will pay for itself when it wins!

  7. Soros, I think very little of your ultra-lib attitudes and support for loser groups like J Street, but this time you did a good thing and I commend you. Hopefully the TV ads will push this thing over the top to victory.

  8. Mr Soros is a socialist. He backs Obama, Palosi and Reid. He has a plan and I am not so sure it is for OUR good, but his. I would just bet that he wants the biggest Gov’t contract in history. What better way for a devout socialist to control the masses than to be in charge of the cannabis industry. For Mr. Soros it is all about money, power and control. Do not get me wrong, I am glad that he donated one million dollers, but I question his motives, and so should everyone else.

  9. Where have the Grateful Dead on others who built careers on the allure of cannabis been on Prop 19? Anyone out there aware of concert fund-raisers and the like. The Dead did a fund-raiser for Obama who turned around and appointed an Attorney General who now promises to prosecute pot smokers.

  10. The conservatives HATE Soros. Of course they hate anyone who’s not a conservative including half the conservatives who are not conservative enough. They hate marijuana just as much.
