Nebraska elections are almost here!

2026, election, Nebraska

Nebraska elections are almost here!

On November 3rd, voters will have an opportunity to decide who represents them in the state capitol.

This election is crucial, considering elected officials attempted to stymie the will of the voters by gutting the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Patient Protection Act that was passed in 2024.

The medical program has finally launched after the state Supreme Court unanimously rejected an attempt from a former state senator to stop the program. The state Attorney General, who opposed the initiative, admitted that he would no longer challenge the results of the initiative.

While MPP did not have the bandwidth to survey candidates for the state legislature, we were able to highlight the two top-polling gubernatorial candidates' policy stances on cannabis policy.

Lynn Walz (D), a former teacher and state senator, has repeatedly stated that she will respect the will of voters and do what she has to do, including issuing executive orders, to speed the process up so that patients can access their medicine. We could not find any public comment on cannabis legalization.

Jim Pillen (R) is the current Governor of Nebraska. He was very resistant to the ballot initiative on legalizing medical cannabis. He did eventually accept that the courts would not overturn the vote of citizens. On July 1, 2026, he signed the medical cannabis regulations into law. He is firmly opposed to adult-use cannabis.
