Mass.: Gov. Healey signs bill increasing cannabis possession limit

Governor Maura Healey (D) signed into law a bill (H. 5350) increasing Massachusetts’ cannabis possession limit from one ounce to two ounces, among other changes!

Massachusetts’ cannabis possession limit was tied for the lowest in the country. Increasing the possession limit will help prevent cannabis consumers from getting entangled in the criminal justice system, with life-altering consequences.

The new law also makes changes to Massachusetts’ cannabis regulatory laws, including reducing the number of members of the Cannabis Control Commission to three.

In other news, MPP released a report that found that Massachusetts has the lowest number of cannabis arrests per capita in the country. Predictably, cannabis arrests — both for possession and sales — have plunged since legalization.

Prohibitionists are trying to undo that progress on Election Day, with a proposed initiative that would repeal legal sales and drive cannabis sales back to the unregulated illicit market and across state lines. Stay tuned for updates on the campaign to preserve the legal, regulated market for cannabis in Massachusetts.
