Governor Kim Reynolds (R) has signed HF 990 into law, which will double the amount of medical cannabis dispensaries in Iowa! The state is required to issue new licenses and/or renew existing licenses by December 1 each year.
This bill will alleviate the travel burden for many Iowans who do not live near the five dispensaries currently licensed.
While this step will not fix the fact that Iowa is still a “low-THC” state in need of a broader program, it is still a step in the right direction. Reform is still needed, as Iowa is still home to one of the most restrictive medical programs in the country.
The new law also allows patients who are not residents to register as Iowa patients.
Despite the restrictive nature of the state’s program, we are still thrilled about doubling the access to medical cannabis.
