Iowa, license caps, medical dispensaries
The medical cannabis expansion bill, HF 990, is heading to Governor Kim Reynolds’ desk! If signed, the bill would double access by increasing dispensary licenses from five to 10.
This would be a vital step in expanding medical cannabis access for one of the most restrictive medical cannabis programs in the country.
No other medication gets treated like cannabis does. Pharmacies are widely accessible throughout Iowa, while dispensaries are capped at five locations for thousands of patients. Rural Iowans have to expend enormous amounts of time and resources on costly travel to receive their medicine.
The bill overwhelmingly passed the House and Senate. Let’s keep the momentum going by filling up the governor’s inbox and voicemail!

Sample message for Gov. Kim Reynolds:
Please sign HF 990, which would increase the number of medical cannabis dispensary licenses from five to 10. This bill would ease the burden of far travel for Iowa patients and increase their accessibility to their medicine.
Some residents in Iowa are a four-hour round-trip from the closest dispensary. The gas and travel time create significant hardships to families who are already coping with serious illness and diminished earnings.
Some patients are suffering without their medicine because the trip is exhausting and costly. Ten dispensaries remains a modest number, but would greatly improve many Iowans’ lives.
Thank you for your time, and please sign HF 990 into law to increase accessibility and improve Iowa patients’ lives!
