This June, we are proud to celebrate Pride Month and honor the profound, invaluable contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community to the cannabis legalization movement. As we look at how far we’ve come, we recognize that today's legal cannabis landscape owes an immense debt of gratitude to the bravery, persistence, and resilience of LGBTQIA+ pioneers.
The intersection between cannabis policy reform and LGBTQIA+ liberation runs deep, stretching back to a time when fighting for cannabis was quite literally a matter of life and death.
During the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 90s, it was the queer community and their allies who stood on the front lines, fighting for compassionate medical cannabis access when the federal government chose apathy. It was the advocates who braved arrests to provide cannabis-infused relief to those suffering from wasting syndrome, severe nausea, and a devastating lack of medical options, and visionary leaders who turned the loss of their partners into a powerful political force, driving the historic, state-level campaigns for medical cannabis legalization.
Without these early, daring strides, the cannabis movement would lack the foundation of compassion and civil rights that defines it today. These trailblazers saw the profound benefits of the plant and fought tirelessly to make it safe, legal, and accessible.
As we look at the progress achieved by 2026, we encourage our supporters to honor this powerful history through meaningful action by intentionally supporting and uplifting LGBTQIA+-owned cannabis brands, dispensaries, and independent businesses.
The fight to end cannabis prohibition, advance social equity, and repair past harms is deeply intertwined with the ongoing struggle for true equality and freedom for all.
We wish everyone a Happy Pride!
