Victory in Portland, ME!

Nov 05, 2013 , , , , ,

We are pleased to announce that Portland is on its way to becoming the first city on the East Coast to legalize marijuana for adults! maine victory

With 80% of precincts reporting, 70% of city voters have approved Question 1, eliminating all legal penalties for possession of up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana by adults 21 years of age and older within city limits.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this historic campaign! This was truly a grassroots effort and required a lot of hard work over the past several months. Needless to say, it all paid off.

This is not just a major victory for Portland, but for all of Maine. It will surely provide a huge boost to our efforts to pass a statewide measure to regulate marijuana like alcohol in 2016.

  1. The Portland Police Department is still entitled to arrest non-medical possessors of cannabis under state law.

This was victory, but it was a symbolic one.

  2. Wow! Amazing victory for the east coast! This is great news. This is will huge economic boost for city and state! Congrats everyone!

  3. Weed is less harmful than alcohol. Legalese it, tax it, make a lot of $ in taxes pay down the deficit and a hell of a lot less Friday & Saturday night bar fights.

  4. Wouldn’t the Maine State Police (unless wisely told to stand down & actually “serve & protect”) enforce Maine State laws that contradict the brave City of Portland’s implicit recognition that god didn’t lie when god said that marijuana, one of god’s intentional creations, “was good”, regardless of the U.S. Federal Gov’t’s opposing doctrine, which Federal dogma is anti-religious, anti-science, anti-family (countless families are destroyed by the Gov’t’s fraudulent criminalization of creation to fill their world-record prison-industrial complex with fathers & mothers, taking them from their families and destroying lives in order to get some conscienceless narcissist politician entrenched in elective office by fooling the citizens s/he “represents” [oppresses]), anti-small-government (conservatives who bow to Federal doctrine, whether out of ignorance, malice, or amoral ambition, are flat-out hypocrites to rail against Big Government out of one mouth’s side while siding with Big Gov’t over the people’s clear will, even when blatantly codified by the book in state or local law, out of the other side of that snake mouth), anti-democratic, & anti-human, preferring to line the coffers of the prison-industrial complex, the mob, the gov’t, and the gangs, instead of recognizing once again that this nation’s puritanically judgmental tendency towards brutal enforcement of stupid prohibition experiments has yet again failed. It was wrong in the first place. I just hope Portland Police Officers follow the law of the city they serve. There are still plenty of Federal jackbooted thugs sadistically eager to crush freedom wherever it blossoms, in direct opposition to President Obama’s directive for them not to.

  5. Can my wife and I spend a weekend there in Portland at a local hotel and indulge
