In a 4-1 vote, the Wisconsin Senate Committee on Health passed a medical cannabis bill sponsored by Senate President Mary Felzkowski.
Medical cannabis has 86% popular support in Wisconsin. But the bill’s passage is far from a slam dunk. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has called the narrow bill “too broad.”
Meanwhile, some Democratic lawmakers have proposed full legalization. While polls indicate Wisconsin voters would approve such a measure in a heartbeat, the legislature’s GOP leadership has made it clear legislation won’t advance as long as they control their chambers.
For now, the best shot we have to reduce the harm done by Wisconsin’s cannabis laws is the medical cannabis bill.
