Washington legalized cannabis over a decade ago — but adults are still prohibited from growing it at home. SB 6204 would finally fix that injustice.
SB 6204 would allow adults 21 and older to grow up to six cannabis plants per person (with a 15-plant household cap) out of public view.
Most states that have legalized cannabis already allow limited home cultivation. Washington is one of only four legalization states that still deny adults the right to grow their own plants for personal use.
Home cultivation promotes personal freedom, reduces unnecessary criminal penalties, and treats cannabis more like other legal adult activities — such as home brewing or gardening.
SB 6204 includes reasonable guardrails and does not authorize unregulated commercial sales. It simply allows responsible adults to grow a small number of plants for personal use.
It’s time to finish the job and modernize Washington’s cannabis laws.
