A medical cannabis expansion bill passed the Iowa House of Representatives last year and advanced out of its committee in the Senate last month. HF 990 would double the amount of dispensaries in Iowa from five to 10, improving one of the most restrictive medical programs in the nation.
Rural Iowans have to expend time and money on costly travel to receive their medicine. No other medication gets treated like cannabis does. Pharmacies are widely accessible throughout Iowa, while dispensaries are capped at five locations for thousands of patients.
As the medical program stands currently, MPP considers Iowa a “low-THC medical cannabis state” instead of a state with a comprehensive medical cannabis program. While increasing the amount of dispensaries will not fix all the needed medical cannabis expansions, it is a step in the right direction for accessibility.
It is time to bring needed change, allowing Iowa patients more options to obtain their medication. Doubling the amount of dispensaries will reduce burdens and allow Iowa to better align with the majority of state medical programs across the nation.
