medical cannabis improvements, Mississippi, veto override effort

Mississippi Governor vetoes both medical cannabis bills!

Governor Tate Reeves (R) has vetoed both medical cannabis improvement bills passed by the Mississippi Legislature this session — even though both had veto-proof support in the House and Senate. Now, it’s up to lawmakers to stand with patients and override these vetoes.

HB 895 would:

  • Eliminate the requirement for follow-up visits with a recommending physician within the first year.
  • Remove restrictive potency caps from many medical cannabis products.

This bill passed with overwhelming bipartisan support: 98-11 in the House, 33-19 in the Senate, and 106-3 on concurrence.

HB 1152 would:

  • Allow terminally ill patients not currently covered under the program to enroll in the program if approved by the state Health Officer.
  • Permit out-of-state patients to register and participate under the same rigorous medical process as Mississippi residents.

That bill also passed decisively: 104-7 in the House, 34-17 in the Senate, and 102-14 on concurrence.

Both measures clearly reflect the will of Mississippi voters and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. Now, the Legislature must act again to ensure these patient-centered reforms move forward.

If you live in Mississippi, contact your state legislators and demand they override the governor’s vetoes of HB 895 and HB 1152!

Together, we can make sure patients across the Magnolia State get the relief they deserve. Let’s keep the pressure on until our lawmakers finish the job.
