adult-use cannabis, cannabis taxes, Michigan
Sen. Jonathan Lindsey (R) and a bipartisan group cosponsors have proposed repealing Michigan’s crushing new cannabis tax.
If you live in Michigan, ask your lawmakers to support his bill, SB 810.
As of last year, Michigan led the nation in per capita cannabis sales, thanks in no small part to the reasonable tax rate voters enacted as part of legalization. But, last fall, lawmakers voted to impose a massive new 24% wholesale tax on cannabis, on top of the existing 16% in retail taxes. House Speaker Matt Hall (R) threatened a government shutdown if the Senate refused to pass the bill. The tax hike took effect on January 1 and sales plummeted by 16% in January 2026.
In 2018, Michigan voters approved regulating cannabis similarly to alcohol. But Michigan is now taxing cannabis exponentially more than alcohol. Michigan's excise taxes on beer and wine are 2-3 cents per glass, or no more than 2% of the price.
The Michigan cannabis industry employs more than 40,000 people, and this massive tax increase is already costing Michiganders their jobs.
