Georgia, low-THC medical cannabis, Medical Marijuana
Georgia is increasingly an outlier when it comes to cannabis policy. Two of its neighbors have passed comprehensive medical cannabis programs — Alabama and Florida. But Georgia’s low-THC medical cannabis program is so limited that MPP does not count it as a medical cannabis state.
Last year, the state Senate passed SB220 and the legislation then passed the House Regulated Industries Committee. The House failed to act on SB220, but has the ability to take it up in 2026. With the recent federal actions to potentially reclassify cannabis as a Schedule III substance, now is the time for Georgia to expand its very limited low-THC program.
Meanwhile, Georgia also remains one of only 19 states that still impose jail time for simple possession of cannabis.
Lobby Day — Monday, January 12, 8:00 a.m.
The legislature convenes next Monday for the second year of its two-year legislative cycle. Our friends at CareforGa are hosting a lobby day on the opening day of the session. It’s crucial that lawmakers hear that cannabis policy reform is important to their constituents. They are hosting an advocacy training and breakfast starting at 8:00 a.m. (registration is necessary) at the Central Presbyterian Church, then will meet on the South Wing steps of the Capitol at 10:00 a.m.
