Georgia, medical cannabis expansion
The Georgia House passed an amended version of SB220 on Thursday in a bipartisan 138-21 vote. The bill now heads back to the Senate for concurrence before the session ends on April 4, 2026.
As amended by the House, the legislation would:
Replace the current 5% THC potency cap with a possession limit of 12,000 milligrams of THC at any one time
Allow vaporization as a delivery method for patients 21 and older
Add lupus, severe arthritis, and severe insomnia to qualifying conditions
Remove language restricting many conditions to severe or end-of-life cases
If you live in Georgia, ask your state senator to concur with House version of SB220!
SB220 falls short of what patients have requested for years. Advocates have been told this is the best we can expect from Rep. Mark Newton (R), who chaired the State's blue ribbon commission on medical cannabis and hemp. This is the only cannabis legislation with a chance of passing this session.
With the session winding down, we also need to focus on state elections. In November, Georgia voters will elect state legislators and the governorship in addition to many state and federal offices. This election will shape the future of cannabis policy in the Peachtree State and in the federal government. If we want meaningful reform, every candidate needs to know we won't be ignored.
