March is Women’s History Month, a time to honor the trailblazers who have challenged the status quo and built the foundations for cannabis policy reform.
From the early days of grassroots activism, influential women across the country have dedicated themselves to advancing fair and humane cannabis policies. At MPP, we recognize that the milestones we celebrate today — legalization, decriminalization, and medical cannabis access — would simply not be possible without the immeasurable contributions of women.
We have witnessed firsthand how women in leadership positions exceed expectations and drive positive change. Whether they are working as entrepreneurs, budtenders, cultivators, or policymakers, women bring unique perspectives and a deep-seated commitment to justice that is crucial for our movement. They are the mothers fighting for their children's right to life-changing medicine, the educators debunking decades of prohibitionist myths, and the patients who refuse to be treated like criminals.
MPP is proud to have some of the most influential women in the cannabis legalization movement on our own team! As MPP’s Director of State Policies, Karen O'Keefe has spent over two decades at the forefront of cannabis policy reform. Working closely with local advocates and lawmakers, Karen played a leading role in the advocacy campaigns that resulted in the first two legalization laws to pass through state legislatures, in Vermont and Illinois. She has also played central roles in several other successful legalization efforts and lobbying campaigns that resulted in more than a dozen medical marijuana and decriminalization laws. Without Karen’s strategic insight and steadfast determination, the cannabis reform movement would not be where it is today.
Additionally, we are proud to both recognize and celebrate the women of the MPP staff, Bridget Spiddle and Violet Cavendish, and MPP Board Chair Betty Aldworth, who make our work possible. They aren't just participating in the movement, they are leading the charge to build a reality where no one is left out or left behind.
This month, we invite you to join us in supporting the women who are building the future of legal cannabis. Here is how you can make an impact:
Happy Women’s History Month from all of us at MPP!
