Alaska, record sealing

Alaska Legislature can help clear records for minor cannabis offenses!

Alaska legalized cannabis more than a decade ago — but many residents are still living with the consequences of past convictions for conduct that is now legal. HB 81 would finally help fix that injustice.

HB 81 would allow individuals 21 and older to petition to seal records for convictions involving possession of one ounce or less of cannabis, when it is their only offense.

If you live in Alaska, ask your state legislators to support HB 81 and bring Alaska’s laws in line with common-sense policy!

Legalization was intended to end penalties for responsible adult cannabis use, yet many Alaskans still face barriers due to outdated convictions for low-level possession. Record sealing promotes fairness, reduces unnecessary collateral consequences, and helps individuals access employment, housing, and educational opportunities.

The bill has already passed out of the House Judiciary Committee and is now being considered in the House Finance Committee — making this a critical time to act.

It’s time to finish the job and align Alaska’s criminal records with its cannabis laws.
