Argentina Expected to Decriminalize Marijuana Today
Argentina is expected to remove criminal penalties for marijuana possession today, according to the Buenos Aires Herald:
Supreme Court Justice Carlos Fayt said the court has reached a unanimous position on an expected ruling that would decriminalize the possession of drugs for personal consumption, which would be announced analyzed today.
If the court rules as expected, Argentina will become the second Latin American country in the last four days to allow the personal use of marijuana.

Let the dominoes fall.
They should ring the bells of freedom as the decision is being read.
Hopefully, we will hear those same bells here in the states within my life time
oh i can only hope that this is the beginning of the end. rise up, recognize and ask somebody!
oh i can only hope that this is the beginning of the end.
I wonder when the U S A will complain about the narco tourism when they see people going there to have fun I will have my passport ready
And when do you think the Main Stream Media will run a story on either Mexico or Argentina???
Been looking all day and still can’t find a story…
omg this is so sweet!
“In an eight-page writ, the Supreme Court said it is unconstitutional to punish personal consumption of marijuana if that action does not harm third parties. ”
I’m glad to see that the highest court in Argentina is at least a group of rationale people. If you’re not hurting others, does the government have the right to regulate your behavior? This is the crux of the issue and it is nice to see that finally someone has recognized a little common sense.
HEY BRUCE!!! You’ve got another BS “scientific report” to debunk:
Study: Marijuana High Robs Men of Sexual High
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,542420,00.html
What I’d love to find out is why FOXNEWS is running this “news story” but is neglecting to report on the study that showed marijuana may protect against brain damage from binge drinking.
I hope you can use this recent article to get yourselves back on TV… maybe to even have a frank discussion on the scientific research.
when mexico decriminalized drugs, i too was skimming through the news channels to see if they would cover it, and i found cnn did a short piece on it…. hopefully they, and others, will report on this….. it’s so hard to not think about it because there are sooooooo many positives to legalizing, decriminalizing doesnt change much, and the negatives, which most see as positives, reduced crime budget, reduction in timber industry, reduction in crude oil use, reduction of prescription drugs used, reduction in alcohol use<<seen bad cause of lost revenues….i could go on and on but all the bads are good,
reduction in crime budget=lower crime rates
reduction in timber industry=less co2 and reduced deforestation
reduction in crude oil use=less co2 and reduced costs for almost everything made since oil is used in the production of just about everything
reduction of prescription drug use=less people dying from man made drugs and lower health care costs
reduction in alcohol use=less drunk drivers,, less alcohol deaths
i honestly cannot think of an overall negative to legalizing marijuana…..if someone can, will you please tell me…. im sure there is a positive side to it
Viva La Revolution! Good for them!
I mentioned in my video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRcSfgBlxXQ
that the major news networks have deliberately refrained from broadcasting this great news. It’s all a part of THE BIG LIE
i just sent e-mails to fox news, cnn, and msnbc….. lets see if they run it
LAME! Wake me up when someone legalizes the sale and production of it.
America is falling further behind.
It wasn’t long ago that the Presidents of 3 Latin American countries all petitioned Obama to legalize drugs. Those countries, as I recall were Mexico, Argentina and Columbia.
Mexico followed through last week, and now Argentina this week. This handicapper is putting my money on Columbia to follow suit next week.
Mark, Glenolden, PA : You’re correct. The Television networks will more than likely not present this in the news in order to quell the marijuana movement here in the US.
It’s a sad fact, but it’s the reality of this world we live in.
We teach medical cannabis seminars and you would not believe how much propaganda the students must “un-learn” in order to learn the truth and facts.
As Iron sharpens Iron, we must all do our part to educate those who are ignorant of the facts.
I hope every country allowes it’s people to have and grow their own smoke. That is the only way to keep any profits from being made by anyone. I am tired of being opressed. We are not crimanals. Speaking of which, Cal. has to release fourty thousand inmates by the end of next month. I hope every one of them goes directly to a eval. place and gets a med. mj. card.
good. Mexico AND Argentina! wow, who’s next? Hopefully the US is soon
Wow now were gonna start seeing 3rd world countries being more progressive then the US. Good job America keep electing these frauds into office!!
6 and 17 – see #13.
It won’t come from the top down here in the US. It will take a grass roots effort.
Write, call, email your local tv, radio, and newspaper. Ask them WHY they aren’t covering these types of stories (HONEST news). Encourage them to do so. Once they reali
OOps! Once they realize there’s an audience for these types of stories, they likely reconsider and start running them.
Remember too, elected officials are just that. Elected. I refuse to vote for any politician that is a prohibitionist. I figure they’re either ignorant, dishonest, or corrupt. NOT what I look for in a leader.
Like the man said, set down the bong, and get out an vote. If there’s not a republican or democrat running you’d vote for, contact the 3rd largest political party (libertarian). Guarantee you they can steer you towards a ‘pro-pot’ politician.
I guess Columbia’s next.
Here’s the article on the 3 Latin American Presidents recommending cannabis legalization. Argentina was NOT one of them, but Columbia and BRAZIL were. The fact that Argentina has gotton on board too is encouraging.
http://blog.norml.org/2009/02/12/former-south-american-presidents-urge-obama-to-decriminalize-marijuana/
Holy shit! Cnn ran a quick message on this. I have yet to see it on any other channel.
http://news.aol.com/article/argentine-court-just-says-no-to-prison/638970 aol ran the story…. everyone go there and at the bottom of the article vote it up as a good read and hopefully it will get to the homepage…..
@Mark: Yeah if Columbia moved away from the WoD that would be a huge victory. It’s received the lion’s share of US “assistance” — military equipment, training, funding, etc. All, of course, to the detriment and misery of the people who live there.
If Columbia could turn us away — say “thanks, but no thanks, we’re going in a different direction” — the precedent would be tremendous. The US has bullied the rest of the world into a prohibitionist drug policy for decades, with Columbia being exhibit 1A. Once countries finally start to feel free to ignore our ridiculous requirements, our moral authority regarding drug policy will certainly erode.
Humm…well our leaders must be worried at this point . I mean they are losing control of other countries policies. You can bet your last dollar our leaders will not fall in line with reason. They will fight it to the bitter end. The usa will be the lsat domino to fall. The news media wont run stories for many reasons, one being our leaders dont want to add fuel to OUR fire. Watch it burn watch it burn. From what I gather from news sources, the WOD’s In Afganistan isnt going so well either, get our troops out of that fight(poppy feilds),get the taliban and/or Osama and get the out. Stop this drug war there. These people wont stop growing poppies no more than caretels will stop growing cannabis. End prohibition, make the profit so little it wont matter, then we wont have to be there or in any foriegn country fighting drug lords. This is costing too much. Any one looked at national debit or how much WE owe the chinesse, JUST IN INTEREST lately? 776,000,000,000. a month? (That may be wrong, but I know it way way too much). Our leaders are killing us, slowly, from drug wars to spending on gawd know what. Time To STOP!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32555527/ns/world_news-americas/ this was on the msnbc website…. there is also a poll on it in the middle over 95% so far voted to legalize….. support the cause!
95.2 percent say yes to legalize cannabis. Will our Gov. listen to us? I hope so but expect nothing. The people in charge are going to fight this. They cannot let dupont go broke. They cannot loose all the campaign contributions from big pharma. They cannot loose all the anti marijuana funds. But most of all they cannot loose all the money and everything that gets taken in all those raids. Sad but task force will be out of a job. SOON I PRAY!
You can’t silence a revolution and change of generations…
You can try, but it fails. Logical and common sense laws for drugs and especially cannabis.

Summer skiing in the Andes is lookin better and better.
It’s cheaper than Co or Utah and drugs are legal. I can not wait to take that heli to higher altitudes!!!!
i love how people confuse ‘decriminalize’ with ‘legalize’ The marijuana community really should do more to help people distinguish the two apart.
First Mexico, now Argentina, tomorrow the World! Will California be near the top of the list? Will the U.S. ever get with the program? Lets all cross our fingers, and keep the pressure on our legislators and other elected officials. Decriminalization? Legalization! Well, these are steps in the right direction. We just need to keep up the momentum……
I was able to find an article about this on my local tv news website ( http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=235&sid=7672880 )
as well as CNN’s website ( http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/08/25/argentina.drug.decriminalization/index.html?iref=newssearch )
But not on the tv itself. Maybe I just missed it?
I keep up with CNN when I can, but not on a regular basis (TV, the website i keep up on all the time) I watch fox news (local) at 9pm each night, then watch the other local news at 10.
I never see anything positive about this subject on either outlet.
The people that want this done, are lazy.
If there are 100 of us that want it legalized, only 20 of them talk about it, and only a handful of those 20 vote, and attempt to do anythign about it, of those few only a couple attend any group efforts like NORML, or SSDP, or LEAP, or MPP.
Its time to get involved, time to put up some money and back up our mouths.
WIth recent events and changing attitudes and finances, now is the most likely time ever to get anything done, but only if we stand as one and take action.
In an effort to become more proactive, we can all add this signature to our emails:
The Netherlands – 1976
Portugal -2001
Mexico – 2009
Argentina – 2009
USA – ??????
If you haven’t heard of this DVD look for it on YouTube the whole thing is on there in parts.
“The Union: The Business of Getting High”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6f4CXxi2Bk
It is a well put together video and has a lot of good points.
@Ben: Yeah The Union is one of the better pot documentaries I’ve seen. FYI, there is a complete version (not chopped up) available on Google Video:

Unfortunately, we have another distraction to endure: the death of the great Senator Edward Kennedy.
While I personally respect all the work he has done and respect the fact that he should be appropriately mourned, I have to think”outside of the box” and put myself in the shoes of the prohibitionists who control our news media who are surely taking advantage of the Senator’s death (and Michael Jackson’s death).
These people are certainly rejoicing at the news of his death in that it gives them yet another excuse to avoid broadcasting the fact that Mexico and Argentina have just decriminalized drugs.
When the good Senator is laid to rest, we should bombard the media with this most important of issues: the fact that we have been lied to for 72 years about cannabis.
Cannabis prohibition is the greatest fraud ever perpetrated on the world.
Cannabis prohibition is the greatest civil rights violation since slavery.
Cannabis prohibition is a masterpiece in the Art of Brainwashing!
Great job Mexico and Argentina! Decriminalization is a step in the right direction. However, I NEED to see one country legalize. Until one nation takes the leap and becomes the cannabis guinea pig, Prohibitionists can keep spreading fear and lies about what would happen to our society should marijuana be comletely legal.
to #38 and #39 Thank You both!!!! I have never seen that documentary before and that is one of the best ones I have seen. One of the people in it said smoking marijuana is not addictive, but wanting to learn more and more about marijuana is….. sooooo true. You cannot deny that!
#32 I understand you want to win
But my friend you dont have to cheat the system like that there are enough peps that will vote yes because they know thats the right answer. Thats what I love about polls, Sometimes people dont say what they really belive because of repramand, But with polls people can be honest.
# 39:
FANTASTIC LINK!!!
I’ve sent it around to a few email contacts both pro and con.
This should be a featured 2 hour special on CBS, ABC,NBC, CNN, MSNBC, FOX and all local channels.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!!!

Cheating does nothing to help the cause, integrity is name of the game when it comes to cheating. Are you willing to give yours away? How bout the integrity Of the cause? We are above this arent we?
@Legalize It #42, Mark #44
Yeah it’s good stuff, right? I’ve been trying to spread the word about this gem. It was released in 2007, but only very recently had a widespread DVD release, showed up on Netflix, etc. I hadn’t even heard about it until a few weeks ago, and by about halfway through I realized I was watching the best modern marijuana documentary I had ever seen.
I think “Union” was the documentary that fired me up the most. I have seen quite a few others and I agree, “Union” is by far the best in regards to presentation of the facts, interviews with some prominent people in the activist movement, and the in depth analysis that this documentary provides. Every pot smoker and not pot smoker should see this documentary, open your eyes people.
FreeTheWeed. Free The People.
Apparently Colombia has already decriminalized marijuana according to this msnbc.com article:
“Colombia has decriminalized marijuana and cocaine for personal use, but kept penalties for other drugs.”
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32571826/ns/world_news-americas/
Is this true? Is it actually written into law over there? Anyone know?
Ben, I just watched that video. I think each and every cop, wanna be cop, and anyone in any type of law enforcement should be forced to watch this also. I am so mad that there are hundreds of thousands of injustices done to law abiding citizens every year. As long as there is a marijuana plant on this earth, I WILL smoke pot. The only way to stop me from smoking said weed is to give me lead poisen. Which so many have from already. The death from marijuana is not from the weed itself but the cop who shoots you to stop you from using marijuana. And the bastards know this. But to stop arresting and killing pot smokers means the loss of millions of dollers stolen from people who smoke pot. GET MY POINT! FUCK YOU TASK FORCE!
ROE and Robert #43 & #45:
I understand your perspective and appreciate your “honesty”… however are we fighting against people that have been honest with us over the past 72 years??? The point of the previous post I was referring to was an attempt to get this more visable on AOL. Yes I believe that we should do what we can to make these articles more visable in the media, and if “tricking” the website is possible, we should use that to our advantage.
You say there are enough people to vote this up to the top (given the choice), but if it’s not out there infront of people how will they lend their opinion… I mean most people don’t regularly search for marijuana related articles and news like some of us do. Simply put most people will not openly search for it. Again the point was to try to make the article more visable on AOL.
Fact is this isn’t a poll that is going to make any difference. It’s not something that media is going to point to, or that our Government will consider when making policy. The only way our government will change policy is from a massive upswell of support from the American people. If you want this to occur get the news in front of more of them!!!
It’s not like the other side is playing fair!!!
To everyone that watched that documentary The Union……we should all burn it to cheap dvd’s and send it out to everyone!!! a 25 pack of blank dvd’s is less than $20… i wonder if the makers would mind much??
THE TENNESSEE ACTIVIST IS NOW THE COLORADO ACTIVIST, after moving this past week. Yeah, I made it!
Viva Argentina, may we all experience the same decriminalization blessing!

Speaking of honesty, one of the 10 commandments states “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor”. That means no lying, always tell the truth. Then there’s the old adage “Oh what a tangled web we weave when we learn to decieve”. That’s an understatement, given the present situation………..
Colorado Activist, congrats on your move!

Of course the problem with decriminalization without legalization is that dealing is still illegal. The authorities will then focus on picking off the dealers. Then what will you smoke? We, and the Argentinians, must fight for full legal rights. Only then will we ever actually be free, at long last.
And only then can society reap the full benefits of legalization, including tax revenue and the elimination of organized crime in the form of drug cartels. All that violence in Mexico would end, immediately, and the drug pushers would disappear, too. Organized crime would lose much of its power. And when drugs are cheap, most urban crime will be history, too.
In the end it will be seen that marijuana isn’t nearly as troublesome, regarding public health and safety issues, as some would have had us believe. Nor does its use condemn anyone to a life of failure, as our last three presidents can clearly attest.
There are no pot skid rows. No, marijuana is a long and well established part of our culture, and no one can yet point to the harm it supposedly does. Now we have only to END this wicked government witch hunt, let bygones be bygones, and let freedom ring, in America, at long last.
The finest core American values, including those of tolerance, freedom and justice for all, are perfectly consistent with legalization of marijuana.
Isn’t it about time we started living by our values?
