Online community still wants reform… is anybody listening?

Earlier this week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Calif.) launched MyIdea4CA.com, a website which encourages Twitter users to “tweet” their ideas for how to “move California forward” and then allows visitors to give each of those ideas an up or down vote. The site has only been live for a few days and already the top three most popular “tweets” involve making marijuana legal, taxed, and regulated in California.

It is encouraging that high-level pols like Gov. Schwarzenegger and President Obama are turning to the Web for new, out-of-the-box ideas but it’s a shame that they have yet to embrace the one proposal which is consistently the most popular.

Nevertheless, those of us yearning for an effective and just marijuana policy will continue to speak truth to power – and it’s only a matter of time before our elected leaders will be forced to listen.

This is a great idea that I hadn’t heard about until literally like 10 minutes ago I’m going to check it out now. But also I know this is off topic but the NY times just put this article up on their website spewing more cannabis propaganda, even tying violence back into the cannabis picture. You gotta read this horribly written p.o.s. its disgusting.

The most basic function of propaganda is to deceive the mind and trick the senses into believing what is not true.

The basic function of thought in the THC deficient mind is tricked into obedience to authority by propaganda and can not distinguish between the deception and truth.

The THC deficient mind is in denial of the truth because propaganda distorts the true facts to suite its own purposes.

The thought process of the THC deficient mind, after accepting the propaganda, will take on the propaganda’s prejudice attributes and dehumanizing undertones as its own expression of opinion.

Anti drug user propaganda is to the mind of the THC deficient as a drug is to a drug users mind.

Help break the cycle of anti drug user addiction, legalize marijuana.

Yeah uhhhhh…. remember change.org??? Same concept?? It took the MPP a matter of a few months to abandon the page that was set up it. This is a larger, national community that you guys used to drive up polls and promote the cause, then stopped visiting or updating all together. Despite repeated requests to do so. The debate there raged on without you, eventually trickling away to nothing. Yes, the online community still wants reform. And not even the MPP is listening.

13 Just Legalize It { 08.29.09 at 8:10 am }

#1 and #10…. it looks like another life ruined from marijuana prohibition…..they only hated it because it was illegal and were getting bad information on the wonderful plant…… its a damned shame…. if he was drinking alcohol they probably would have never kicked him out…. funny

14 Just Legalize It { 08.29.09 at 8:21 am }

to #12 Mikey…. change.org has become so diluted with all kinds of small petty garbage that its not worth it anymore…. noone is going to look to that site for anything anymore…..

also…. i was wondering if MPP is trying to get debates with people in congress?? or at least in the senate…. we should be debating the people that make the laws… not just some yahoo who thinks marijuana will cause phsychotic episodes….. if we can make our lawmakers think twice then that is a bigger step…. The only real problem with it is that it cannot be televised because we cant be having these quick 10 minute debates anymore…..

we need 1-2 hour long debates and go through more and more issues… most of the time, you dont even hear about hemp in any debates…. which would be enough to change the minds of most…. we dont hear about why it was made illegal, why the government made the lie of marijuana frying brain cells, why the government cant prove it causes cancer, why the government made it illegal and years later told everyone to grow hemp, then burnt it all down after the war…..

why did nixon throw out the schafer report? why arent any prohibitionists looking at any of the new studies done on marijuana? there are so many questions we should be asking them…. make them speechless, then they will listen.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger needs to stop worrying about his political future and start acting like a hero if he wants his fans back.
I couldn’t find that movie, “Total Recall”, when he called himself an “ass-hole” when he saw himself being a total jerk.

16 huh { 08.29.09 at 8:59 am }

The people in office can either listen to the people or not its there choice,but what will happen is if they dont listen,then it will be bye bye for them
But this time the momentum is with the people and not the other way around as it usually is,so its time for elected leaders to once and for all listen to the people.

17 Joel { 08.29.09 at 9:01 am }

Could be that when he saw his old video of himself and how happy he was with a joint in his hand that he felt guilty and did a complete turn around and start putting his fans in prison and serve those who controls him.

Will S.:

The New York Times article is a bunch of horse manure as we well know. Interestingly enough another study just came out from the UK debunking the claim that “skunk” cannabis causes schizophrenia. The researchers looked at nine years worth of data and found that despite increases in marijuana use and increases in potency the number of diagnoses of schizophrenia has been level or declining. So the all of this propaganda coming from the UK about “skunk” making people insane is nonsense, without basis in fact.

The 17 year old probably has anger control issues from some underlying psychiatric disorder like ADD or ADHD. More than likely the pot calms him down. If he were drinking of course it would be the more socially acceptable and he would be 10 times more violent. Children today are growing up addicted to something and its society pushing them that way. Watch tv, play this video game, take this pill, eat this, drink that. Teenagers don’t have to be on drugs to be jerks thats apart of their growing up and growing out of a behavior. Believing that all stoners are unproductive is untrue and a flat out lie. Look at the city of Amsterdam. It is a beautiful thriving place with unique innovative ideas for the future. In the united states if you smoke pot you either go to jail or become a politician.

22 R.O.E. { 08.29.09 at 4:01 pm }

Ya that story about the kid is such BS. I had a kid in my home like him he was ADD and would listen to NO ONE. He eventually he left our home to live where ever he pleased and Im sure along the way he started smoking canabis (couldnt ever catch him not that it mattered). The fact is he had many behavioral problems to start with and the cannabis didnt cause it. He was violent toward his mom , me and anyone that tried stop him from doing as he pleased. This kind of behavioral problems ,usually start at an early age , many kids with these problems go on to use cannabis and hard drugs, they dont start there .

It strikes me how people(myself incuded) will look for things to blame their behavior on, drugs,people around them, our selves(parents), on and on. Sometimes its just the kids have problems,sometimes theres nothing to blame,kids just dont want to listen to reason and think they know everything. So us parents look for something to blame.

Has anyone looked for the facts on the problems sighted in this article as far as mental problem they say the evil “Skunk” caused? Of course we all know this to be wrong but facts need to be shown in order for truth to shine its light in dark places.

The time is coming when our leaders will have no choice but to listen. People are seeing how much control government has over US. Once tyranny is recognized it cant be hidden.

Heres an Idea , Make it legal to put any taxes you have toward the causes YOU think is worthy , Put a % of taxes toward nessasary things like millitary defence and alike automatically, the rest is your choice. Our leaders would have to lobby the people in order to get their bills and alike supported.

R.O.E #23, Lanny #18, and Joel #15,

Schwarzenegger has the chance now (although he kinda had a chance several months ago) to make himself look good by using twitter to his advantage (http://myidea4ca.com/). The big question now is whether or not he will take the most voted on subject seriously. Namely, legalizing marijuana. Hopefully he does not do what Obama did, and basically ignore the #1 issue that interests the greater American population.

What are everyone’s thoughts on Schwarzenegger’s use of twitter as a jumping off/suggestion place for state topics? I hope it ends up being a milestone for changing the negative cannabis rhetoric that still plagues the current media, and a true chance to legalize cannabis!

26 Clarence { 08.29.09 at 6:25 pm }

I do not live in Cal. but I think Arnold is going to use marijuana reform to his advantage for the next election. He knows pot smokers are the most passive people. What is sad is he pretty much stands alone on this issue. But come next election, he will win by a landslide just on this single issue. As for the teenager who has behavorial problems, he can be prescribed legal mind altering drugs that will destroy his liver and stomach lining. That causes him to be prescribed more meds to counteract the meds that he was taking in the first place. Now the facts. He destroys his body with legal drugs. The doctors fix him every time for an ungodly amount of money, and they are happy to do so. Let him smoke pot and nobody gets a single dime. That is where the trouble starts. Doctors do not get paid. Pharmacies do not make any money, and the Psych’s do not get paid. That is pretty much whereI am at. I can get almost any pain med. I want legally from big pharma. I have. I also have been hooked and used a needle for years. I have been pharma free now for 19 years now. I smoke cannabis for my pain now and lead a normal life. I work and raise three kids by myself, which I could not if I went to prescription drugs again. I know that my story is not much different than that of hundreds of thousands of cannabis users. All I can say right now is do not ever give up on marijuana reform. Keep toking, stay out of the pharmacy, and most of all become an activist.

27 R.O.E. { 08.30.09 at 1:46 am }

I just hope Ahnolds twitters thing dont turn out ike Obamas town hall. You gotta know that the majority of his tweets have to be cannabis related. I mean really , its un avoidable. There are just certain people that need to give up and do what is right, prohibition has/is causing so many problems world wide. There is a better way, there has to be a compassionate way to do this. Threats and violence( police and laws/jails) does nothing but makes people more angery. There no respect. Respect for law nor truth on either side of this fight….no respect for humanity. Come down off of your pedistals. See what it is to live ….see what it is to be alive….dont be puppets any more…..be patiots,be statesmen….dont be liars and thieves….do what is right and LEAD!

If the MPP feels that Change.org is not worth their time then they can transfer control of the “legalize marijuana” page to someone else who does. They have been contacted repeatedly by multiple activists that still use that site and are willing to take over responsibility of administering the page. There has been no response whatsoever that I am aware of. I personally feel it is beneficial to maintain a legalization presence on Change.org because there is still a large community of activists that still use that page, some support legalization, some are against. And the conversation about this continues there on other blogs on the site but our page has become inactive. I don’t feel that we should shy away from this debate, regardless of where it’s at. Those of us that still use the site don’t really care if the MPP feel that they can no longer benefit from maintaining the page. The legalization movement will benefit from the conversation.

Good Idea, a serious and in-depth debate for all to see.

At first I thought ‘Why wait for the mainstream media to produce it?’

‘Why not organize it to be broadcast live on the internet and recorded by an independent or public television source.’

‘So that once it is recorded it can stay on the web for everyone to watch.’

But then I thought that having a mainstream media outlet produce it would also be like forcing one of the perpetrators of this prohibition to step up and start making good on some reform.

Either way, I think there is some good sense built into your idea.

NOT AS A BLOG OR AN ARTICLE. just make it a link on the home page. We need this badly MPP. I will also make this request on NORML.com Thank you!

35 Rhayader { 08.31.09 at 7:49 am }

Agree with JJ, a centralized database tracking politicians and their record on MJ policy (and providing contact information for all of them) would be a great resource.

Any idea when the Governator is expected to respond to the ideas submitted on this site? Marijuana policy is far and away the most popular topic.

37 David { 08.31.09 at 8:50 am }

I, too, request such a database.

It’s hard to keep track of everyone’s standings otherwise. Plus, if any of these representatives change their mind on an issue, we can update it as necessary. We should then link each rep to a source page providing some sort of proof of their standing, such as a page containing a quote regarding their support or lack thereof so that people visiting the database can see for themselves where the info is coming from.

yay? nay?

definate YAY! i wish i could do more as far as contacting my rep. but my rep. is Barney Frank and we all know he is 100% for legalizing marijuana. My senator is John Kerry who has shown interest in legalizing and when asked if he smoked marijuana just comes out with a swift “yes” with no excuses or regrets like so many other politicians give. I’m just waiting for an election to replace Ted Kennedy and put in a pro-legalization senator.

40 Lea { 08.31.09 at 9:59 am }

41 OH Activist { 08.31.09 at 10:03 am }

YAY! The database is a great idea. It would not take long for it to be compiled if activists had a website to go to where they could submit letters they have received from their representatives. I already know where most of my representatives stand on this issue and I would gladly submit the letters I have received from them stating their opinions on Prohibition. The database could get more detailed and even list the reasons why politicians are for Prohibition (protect the children, it causes cancer, etc.) which would make it extremely easy for constituents to bombard them with studies and scientific evidence that refute their “facts”

42 Clarence { 08.31.09 at 10:06 am }

@ OH Activist

I would definitely like to see a chronological history depicting the progress of each politician’s stance up to the present. That would offer a lot of clarity for voters as we make up our minds about who we want representing us.

44 Rhayader { 08.31.09 at 10:27 am }

@OH

Yeah I have plenty of written responses from my representatives (in North Carolina) on the issue as well. I’d be more than happy to submit the content of said responses in some sort of standardized format to a national database.

45 FreeTheWeed { 08.31.09 at 10:30 am }

Blame the parents not the weed. It is so socially acceptable when some BS happens to just find the scapegoat instead of looking at the real issue.
FACT: British Skunk is not the most potent strain out there. Go to any seed bank online and you will find strains that promise THS levels as high as 30%
Once again shows that half the time people who are against weed, dont even know what they talking about.
We should all write a book about how weed positively influenced or affected our lives.
I been smoking pot for 10 years now, last 4-5 years i been smoking daily. I will not post that weed is harmless, any substance when abused will have some kind of detrimental effect on your health. I do know that my memory has gotten worse and it does require more effort on my part to remember certain things. Maybe there are other parts of my life that have been affected by i sure can’t tell.
I am still a productive tax paying resident and since I started smoking pot I have been promoted several times. Not saying that pot got me the promotions but it sure did not stop me from getting them either. I do not go around blaming drugs or other people for my problems. I have a social network of friends who do and do not smoke pot and i am equally respected by both groups.
Weed is not a problem, nor is it a solution. We need to take a closer look at our social perception and bring light to the issues that really do destroy families and individuals.
My father’s death was heavily contributed by alcohol. Legalize weed or prohibit alcohol again. Let the people decide what is more harmful to their bodies and their lifestyles.
Free the weed. Free the people.

46 Rhayader { 08.31.09 at 10:32 am }

Even if they say they support Legalization they could “change” their mind once in office.

Yeah but that’s almost an advantage for us. Imagine if someone got close enough to Obama to actually show him his youtube video and confront him directly about whether he has changed his mind, and if so, why. Unfortunately only the MSM elite can even ask the guy questions, and in those cases topics are carefully controlled with an eye toward political gain.

But lesser politicians actually have to publicly answer to the people from time to time. The more we get these people on record, the more ammunition we have. If they flip-flop in the wrong direction, they play right into our hands. Especially with the growing media support.

47 Clarence { 08.31.09 at 12:41 pm }

Free the weed, maybe you are just ten years older. I have been smoking weed for over 33 years and I am 33 years older now than when i started smoking cannabis. I have no illnesses and am very healthy except for all the broken bones over the years. I raise three kids by myself without their mom around and I have had the same job for over 8 years also. Do not blame cannabis for your faults unless it can be proven by science. I want any politition to prove to me that cannabis can harm me in any way with science. They can’t.

Obama’s poll numbers started declining right after he shunned the marijuana issue. He had the chance to signal an intent to review our current marijuana laws – could have appointed a commission to study and make a recommendation. Now with health care – again off on the wrong foot. He should have lead to get health care as a basic right put into the CONSTITUTION. Old folks are scared that they’ll be denied care based on cost. The rest of the world has seen the folly of our drug war – but America is addicted to her drug war. Everyday you read about Millions of $$$$$ worth of marijuana destroyed by drug warriors. Gee – how we gonna pay for health care???? I swear – government couldn’t pour piss out of a boot if instructions were written on the heel. Instead they’d pass a law and make it illegal to pee in a boot! I personally don’t trust a nanny government that says that adults must be forbidden from using certain plants in the privacy of their own homes. Where do they get the right? People have a natural right to use the plants of the earth. The 10th amendment affirms this. The first amendment should have been used to forbid Puritans from imposing their religious (all pleasure is sin) doctrine on America and America onto the whole world. We expected change from the “change we can believe in” candidate.

As for the change.org, it’s a waste of time. We already spoke in deafening tones to Obama and he laughed at us. Further input there will bare no fruit. I am five years away from retirement, at that time I will move from this backward POS state to a Cannabis friendly state. I am afraid the dream of national Cannabis legalization will not occur in my lifetime.

question for those in cal–when mj is leagalized what do you propose to do with the law enforcement-the prison guards-lawyers-judges-and all others envolved with the “war on drugs” that are going to be put out of work…this is an industry that will be shut down with the stroke of a pen–any one got any ideas what good an out of work lawyer is–tell me

61 Aaron Smith { 09.03.09 at 1:51 pm }

Lanny:

Not to fear! There will be plenty of work for law enforcement and corrections officers in a world with legal marijuana. More than 64,000 violent crimes went unsolved in California in 2007…. there’s something they could start working on.

62 STTAMMP Out Prohibition { 09.03.09 at 5:38 pm }

To lenny and everyone else interested.

I have put thought into the question: what will happen to all those who make a living from the drug war if cannabis is legalized tomorrow.

First of all there is the military. We need gung ho fighters in the real war to defend us. The military always needs people who follow orders mindlessly.

Once cannabis is legalized an entire industry will develop and there’s still going to be a need for security personnel.

Some can cross train into other fields and secure jobs within the government. The U.S. is severely undermanned in its inspection jobs. Those folks can inspect food, drugs and ports or any of the other things that need inspection to protect us from harms that are being ignored because of the drug war.

If you put your minds to it you can think of many more jobs that these folks can make a living at.

The theory that there will be massive lay-offs and sky-high unemployment from the end of the drug war is just another anti drug user propaganda scam.

Easy to believe they would do the same to third world countries. Or places to pillage their resources bribing a few officials. Invading Iraq, giving Sadamn chemical weapons or doping the food supplies with adulterations and poisons. How do we know for sure, trust me?

The Sadomoralist leading the Illiterate

Many not even getting kickbacks, just teabagging out of gullibility and horshit, flung wrapped in pretty bows. Americans are being killed every day by those we pay to protect us. Thats called being a wingnut folk’s. Enough of the predictions. Gossip kills as many as the bad laws perpetuated.

When he and his croonies laughed at the online community’s top suggestions to legalize marijuana at his March 26, 2009 online townhall meeting, he destroyed himself right then and there…I think he would have more than enough public support for his other projects if he had not turned him back on us then…oh well, I don’t think he can dig himself out of this one, he’s a one term president if not impeached before then for other reasons that may come to light.
