MPP’s Nevada Chapter Issues $10,000 Challenge

At a Las Vegas news conference today, the Marijuana Policy Project of Nevada announced details of a $10,000 challenge to the people of Nevada. MPP-NV will pay $10,000 to anyone who can disprove three statements of fact that demonstrate that marijuana is objectively and unquestionably safer than alcohol.

The challenge, announced by MPP-NV manager Dave Schwartz with a large mock check for $10,000,  kicks off a long-term public education campaign regarding the relative harms of marijuana and alcohol, and the harm caused by marijuana prohibition.

MPP-NV is challenging Nevadans to disprove the following three statements:

1. Alcohol is significantly more toxic than marijuana, making death by overdose far more likely with alcohol.

2. The health effects from long-term alcohol consumption cause tens of thousands of more deaths in the U.S. annually than the health effects from the long-term consumption of marijuana.

3. Violent crime committed by individuals intoxicated by alcohol is far more prevalent in the U.S. than violent crime committed by individuals intoxicated by marijuana only.

To receive the $10,000 award, Nevada residents must provide peer-reviewed studies or government statistics that contradict all three of these statements. In a statement issued today, Schwartz said, “We are confident that we won’t need to pay out this $10,000.” That’s putting it mildly. Not only is marijuana safer than alcohol, there’s evidence that it may even protect against some of the damage caused by binge drinking.

lol this is great mpp should do this in every state they will never lose and alot more people would get educated better yt they should send that challenge to the federal government and tell them if they an prove it they would pay for the war on drugs lol

2 James { 09.23.09 at 11:36 am }

Should’ve made it a million, that would get some media attention.

3 Madjoe { 09.23.09 at 11:53 am }

As Nevadans we must begin discussing these topics with people now, so they are educated when it is time to vote on taxing and regulating marijuana in 2012. Nice work Mr. Schwartz.

4 joey { 09.23.09 at 12:00 pm }

I think this is great! We should see this kind of thing popping up all over the country!
This will make a giant leap in terms of educating the public on the issue

Dave Schwartz and the Nevada MPP are definitely going to be keeping that $10,000.

:-)

If they challenge the government like this, the government will do what it always does, falsify information and lie to our faces and call it “facts”

9 Rev. Nancy Harris { 09.23.09 at 12:34 pm }

Thank you MPP!

10 Christopher { 09.23.09 at 12:43 pm }

You said:

Scarr { 09.23.09 at 12:29 pm } If they challenge the government like this, the government will do what it always does, falsify information and lie to our faces and call it “facts”

Does that mean reasonable people will believe those “facts”? Informed citizens must inform their fellow citizens. Most people when presented with shocking revelation either embrace it or seek to bury it.

We need to seek our those positive to our goal and envelope them into the fold.

You sound like most marijuana consumer/pro-pot people. You are already defeated. That is the greatest threat to our cause.

If you believe you’ve already lost, then you have never won.

This is interesting. I’m in my mid-forties & once or twice a year someone talks me into going out to drink excessively. I won’t do it unless I have some cannabis at home to wake up to. For me, it always relieves the fuzziness & sickness I feel the morning after & gets me back on my feet again to do the things I need to do. If I don’t have my cannabis the next day after heavy drinking then I’m just worthless – I’m lucky I can get out of bed. The alcohol-poison is just too much of a drag on my system. Cannabis for good health!
~and on all issues; thanks MPP for all you’ve done (and doing).

The best part is the money part .Because it could be a penny or a million dollars,.What you cant argue against is FACT.FACTS are FACTS,.This is one reason why this war on drugs is useless,cmon people revolt!!Es
Esp. you mister President who knows better,shame on you.

15 420 { 09.23.09 at 1:33 pm }

It easily could be a million dollars put up, because it’ll never be proved against the facts,so put up a million its impossible for anyone to win it.IMPOSSIBLE

16 Ben { 09.23.09 at 2:22 pm }

Although a good idea for media coverage, I see this being a long drawn argument about the information someone will provide. MPP-NV will most likely spend valuable time dis-proving falsified peer reviewed experiments. I smell $10,000 worth of litigation fighting someone that wants to win this money by any means necessary, i.e. fake documents, experiments, bunk medical “association” documents, and so on.

I will give you $10,000 to prove to that up is down and red is yellow. This is going to an overhead nightmare for the folks that work in the MPP-NV. After the first 500 bullshit explainations they are going to wish they didn’t do this.

17 Awesome { 09.23.09 at 2:36 pm }

I would think a large national organization like MPP could at least offer a larger prize than Jack Herer???

The drug warriors will simply hide behind the shield of “Not enough research has been done…”. They will then state that this is why marijuana isn’t already legal as medicine “because not enough research…..” And so on and so forth.

But if it catches a headline, it will be well worth it for the publicity stunt.

24 Justin { 09.23.09 at 6:08 pm }

Bruce,
This is probably one of the greatest publicity stunts I have ever seen. I think you should do the same thing only nationally. Also, you should really bump the price up. Maybe $500,000+ Than have a media day of you putting that into a trust fund. The media will run with it.
Anyone who tries to collect the prize must depate the facts publically.

I’m going to give you guys $20 right now. Wish I could afford more I really do. I’ll send more in two weeks.

25 cs { 09.23.09 at 6:08 pm }

read this if you are interested in facts (& I have not checked the authenticity of this article) & what can be done to change the “facts”

It just all depends on how you look at some things…

Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California , was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Congressman Harry Reid’s great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.

The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows in Montana territory:
cid:1.3535506613@web83202.mail.mud.yahoo.com

On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: ‘Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.’

So Judy recently e-mailed Congressman Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle.
Harry Reid:
cid:2.3535506614@web83202.mail.mud.yahoo.com

Believe it or not, Harry Reid’s staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:

“Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.”

NOW THAT’s how it’s done, Folks!

That’s real POLITICAL SPIN

33 JJ { 09.23.09 at 10:32 pm }

Bruce, I know for a fact that Mr. John Stewart on the Daily Show would love to hear about this. I know he is a full supporter of legalization and I think you should contact him with this information. Just to get national attention. We all know that Comedy Central is a stoner based tv program and I think more celebrities would jump on the band wagon if we asked them to. We need more people with money for donations or to even spruce up the $10,000 to the cool $1,000,0o0. I mean someone should be calling Doug Benson, Jamie Kennedy, Megan Fox, Micheal Phelps, shit, call Dave Chappelle. All of these people get to smoke pot free and clear of drug charges because of their celebrity status. Maybe they could help our cause since they can openly say they smoke pot on national tv.

34 Matt { 09.23.09 at 10:52 pm }

I agree, up the ante. It is obvious the statements cannot and will not be disproven, so increase the dollar amount for more exposure. Grab the media’s attention by the balls

Anyone read some of the posts over at drugwarrant.com ?
Theres some interesting stories there.

39 DarthNole { 09.24.09 at 8:34 am }

Consider making this more than a single state initiative. Make this a National opportunity and increase the award to $250K to the first person or organization that can disprove those statements. I would think that you could even get an insuurance policy put in place to pay the award IF it was won (they use insurance when doing hole-in-one contest awards at golf courses).

The final award amount is really irrelevant to a point. It has to be a legitimate amount that is available to be paid out (insurance policy has the advantage over donations in a bank account due to the amount that can be offered). We all know the first statement can never be disproven and because of it there is no possible way for the money to be paid.

I was watching a news report the other day regarding alcohol abuse in Russia (they were talking about putting warning lables on Vodka). They said that 40,000 Russians die each year due to alcohol poisoning (alcohol overdose)…. anyone know any names of any deaths by marijuana overdose???

40 uh oh { 09.24.09 at 8:35 am }

Uh-oh.. I see a bunch of annoying government propaganda in response to this. After all, “emergency room visits are up for those who have used marijuana.” Never mind that anyone who has THC in their system is lumped in and marijuana is then listed as the cause of their ER visit. (Rolling eyes…)

41 Dayadog { 09.24.09 at 9:08 am }

42 Emory { 09.24.09 at 12:40 pm }

43 paula nutley { 09.24.09 at 1:35 pm }

have partaken in marijuana consumption for many years, only consumed alcohol socially maybe twice a year for a few years several years ago while clubbing, but haven’t consumed alcohol in at least 10 years. still consume marijuana at every oportunity. will always vote to legalize marijuana. as it stands today marijuana pulls in more revenue than corn.

44 Dayadog { 09.24.09 at 1:37 pm }

Emory,
I like the line of thinking, however, we know what they will say………..nothing. Now taking it to the DARE program or others that are staunch opponents to the issue.

I believe the approach to take is to cut and paste this on anti-cannabis sites to lure them in to the challenge. It’s the ones who don’t believe that we need to approach to change public opinion. I believe the government is aware and could care less (you know what i mean).

So, let’s target the audience of public that doesn’t believe and try to change public opinion which should lead to changes in our legislature.

45 POLYMORPHLEGION { 09.24.09 at 2:35 pm }

My advocacy group is going to issue this same challenge to Ohioans. We’re planning on painting big signs with “WIN $10,000″ written in huge letters. Nothing gets peoples attention like money and I am positive that people who hear about this (people who LOVE their alcohol and DESPISE cannabis) will go home, get on the internet, and search day and night only to finally realize that “Wow, cannabis is not bad after all” If you live in the Cincinnati Dayton area and would like to help out our cause, check out our advocacy group’s website by clicking on the hyperlink

56 Dan { 09.25.09 at 4:15 pm }

57 Cliff { 09.25.09 at 4:24 pm }

Mpp, your using the house rules of Vegas. Making a bet that can’t lose. Challenge that POS Obama to prove it wrong. He won’t even talk about cannabis, that POS.

58 Fred Evil { 09.25.09 at 9:50 pm }

This is fantastic. And when the challenge goes unmet, we raise the stakes, then again, and again, and again!

For lawyers out there, I’m curious. Is the FDA failing American citizens, by allowing 26 MILLION of us to consume an entirely unregulated product? Aren’t we as consumers entitled to protections under the law? Are they abdicating their responsibilities for public safety by ignoring this entire industry?

Just curious if there is any traction there.

59 Qew NC { 09.26.09 at 4:13 am }

I agree a brilliant strategy but the amount needs to be higher. It’s blatently obvious nobody will ever be able to dis-prove those 3 facts.
Our government is in denial with it’s head buried in the sand hoping the truth will go away, but it isn’t is it?
The rigorous scientific scrutiny of the FDA brought us the wonders of Celebrex, Vioxx, Ambien and a host of other chemicals with lethal and deadly side effects yet they continue to slobber this drivel that there is no scientific evidence to back the medicinal values of cannabis.
There are RHEAMS of information to the contrary.
It’s time they woke the F*#k up, push back on our officials, Hard! I’m sick of this Sh^t, live likes it’s legal damnit!

OK here is a thought. The ad on TV says marijuana smokers support terrorism by buying from drug dealers. I say prohibitionists support terrorism (mexican cartels)
by not legalizing marijuana. What they don’t know is I get it locally grown. I support my local grower, not the Cartels in Mexico. The prohibitionists are the supporters of terrorism. Anyone who believes in Reefer Madness, the main item of propoganda in the prohibitionists terror arsenal. Just a thought, what do you all think? Please respond with a reply.
Thanks.

66 Christ Almighty { 09.26.09 at 1:26 pm }

Prohibitionists: noun- 1. Fear mongers, 2. Right-wing conservative types, 3. GOD fearing Christians or one of the other 20 or 30 religions that Satan relished in their creation and ability to divide the people into isolated groups with different ideologies and beliefs with regard to the one true GOD. What a dumb broad. Marijuana doesn’t cause u to lose a job. Drug testing does. I failed a drug test at a previous employer and they allowed me to come back after two weeks bc I was such a good employee. About as much of a gateway as milk is to Jack Daniels. I have yet to meet a violent toker that has not been using alcohol. And it’s not addictive. I put it down a week ago to pass a drug test and I still have it in my house. An addiction is not being able to resist use when it is in front of you. If I can “just say no” any time I want, then I must not be addicted, even when it’s in front of me. I haven’t had any racing lunatic symptoms from withdrawl.

I think that the gov, would probably benifit from legalizing it instead of “fighting ” it….filling prisons with good folks just trieing to relax has always seemed like a crock of crap to me….and smokers of marijuana dont rob people or go about hurting anyone….we are too busy channel surfing looking for a good cartoon and eating cheetos LOL…..all I realy have to say is Thank You MPP…..keep up the good work……and until it IS legalized….well i guess I’ll be an outlaw LOL puff puff pass .

There are websites, especially Gov run ones that simply lie and say it is dangerous, its why its still on the schedule 1.

Id love to see that, but, who would ever see it?
the news will not carry it, noone can see what they can not hear about.
The system is against us, despite that, its time to shove it up the systems ass.

79 Seth { 09.30.09 at 2:13 pm }

Actually number two is an incorrect statement…Alcohol causes tens of thousands of deaths annually while marijuana has never been proven to kill anybody ever.

80 Derek { 09.30.09 at 2:24 pm }

Weed has never killed anyone. A majority of marijuana related arrests are for possesion, not the results from the effects. Also, when people go to a bar, fights are sure to start. We smoke joints, go eat, and make friends. No fights.

81 Joseph "Ironman" Siler { 10.02.09 at 12:43 pm }

Seth; Marijuana has never in 5,000 yrs of recorded use ever killed anybody by overdose. A person would have to smoke 1,500lbs of marijuana in 15 minutes, not allowing one iota of smoke to escape into the air to MAYBE kill themselves. If a person tried to do this they would most likely die from oxygen depravation, not THC overdose. We cannot say however that some idiot didn’t try a “look ma, no hands” boner stunt while stoned, that resulted in their death. I can say though that in my 41yrs of responsible consumption of marijuana, NO ONE I know has ever been that stupid. I can say, saddly that I have lost several friends, and a brother to drunk driving, and alcoholism. When will they ever learn?
