Let Pres. Obama Know You Want to End Marijuana Prohibition

Since 1965 over 20 million Americans have been arrested for a marijuana related charge, and that number grows by two about every minute. You heard me right. Someone in this country is arrested on a marijuana charge every 36 seconds–clearly marijuana prohibition isn’t working. But we can’t relent. We need to keep letting our government know how we feel.

For the second year in a row we have an opportunity to let the Obama administration know what ideas are most important to us. Last year ending marijuana prohibition was the number one idea on change.org’s top 10 “ideas for change in America” list, but it currently sits out of the money in fourth place. Let your voice be heard and vote to end marijuana prohibition once and for all (voting ends March 12).

Kurt…. you are awesome… thanks for the post!!!!

I think a few of us are wondering what the loophole will be this year to side-step this issue. I’m guessing the resulting winners this year will not receive the same presentation as last year, I don’t see any mention of the President addressing the winners.

On the website it states that each winner will be routed to the relevant Obama Administration team member. Anyone have any clues what this might entail?

3 DarthNole { 03.04.10 at 2:59 pm }

BTW – I was looking at the DEA website today (I really wanted to piss myself off so I went there) and ntoiced this :

“There are also many long-term health consequences of marijuana use. According to the National Institutes of Health, studies show that someone who smokes five joints per week may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day.”

I realize that they choose their words carefully and included “may” but….. 5 Joints = 7 packs of cigarrettes ?????

5 joints = 140 cigarrettes

Does the research really show this or is this another example of lies being spread by our DEA?

4 DarthNole { 03.04.10 at 3:04 pm }

Angela…. our luck it will get sent to the Office of National Drug Control Policy and Gil Kerlikowske will be barred from talking about Legalization.

It really doesn’t matter the outcome… what matters is that the administration once again sees this as a Top issue. Let’s just do what we can to keep this in the mix and deal with the BS that the Government throws our way. An actual discussion will go a long way at revitalizing my support for the President! Ignoring it will be a death blow.

That sounds more like a quote from NIDA, not NIH. NIDA definently has some stake in prohibition, so I wouldn’t trust them for anything. Besides, did you know in order to work for NIDA, you may have to sell your soul and stomp on the left kidneys of your enemy when windsurfing in the Himalayas, but only on Wednesdays during the hours of American Idol GMT.

I say we just weigh them all against a duck and get it over with.

No problem guys…. It sure did make me feel good when I saw Kurt’s Post…. they are actually listening :)

I’ve wasted a lot of time at work in the past couple of days, but it’s for a cause I care about so… I’m going to hit up every marijuana related site that I can think of… every marijuana related article that I can find (and even some that aren’t but that I can tie cannabis to in some manner) and I am going to post… post… post that link everywhere.

I spent last night…over 8 hours….on my facebook accounts…I have 6 for games that I play with over 500 friends per account. I went through and EVERY single person in the USA got a message from myself telling them to please look at the issue and vote. I was kind and very curtious. I hope it helped cause it was pretty tiring, but if it stays at #1…it is worth EVERY second of it!!!!! LEGALIZE OBAMA…or get the fuck out of the Oval Office

22 Clarence { 03.05.10 at 6:57 am }

I have a feeling it will be the media that gets us the most support for reform. Reason is, When this becomes the #1 guestion for a sacond year in a row with the white house side stepping the question, the media will demand to know why. Then we will be put on a national stage. Nothing could be better. Even Jane V. Mitchel, who is on HLN channel said just yesterday, drugs should be legalized so we can keep violent offenders in jail. I agree but there is no sence in keeping cannabis users in jail for a minute longer. Free us all. Free the weed.

23 Just me { 03.05.10 at 7:55 am }

LOL 5 joints = 140 cigarrettes , I could care less if one joint equaled 1000 cigarettes . I was addicted to those nasty things at one time and no one joint could ever be that bad. At least with a joint I would get a buzz. I got headaches from cigs.

24 DarthNole { 03.05.10 at 8:58 am }

Just me: I kicked that nasty habit about 8 months ago and couldn’t feel better.

I’m a 3 joint a day smoker.

That’s 21 per week…

If 5 joints = 140 cigs…. then 1 joint = 28 cigs

21 joints = 588 cigs in a week

588 cigs = 29.4 packs per week

29.4 packs per week = 4.20 packs per day… (I laughed when I saw the math work out this way)

Taking sleep into account that’s a cigarette every 11-13 minutes

If I smoked 4.20 packs of cigarrettes every day I swear I’d be dead in a year!!!!

Is the DEA really allowed to publish crap like this???

25 JJ { 03.05.10 at 11:32 am }

darth, I quit smoking cigarettes 4 years ago. Before I stopped, I smoked about 3 joints a day. Since then I have smoked an average on the days I work, about 3 joints a day. On my off days, probably about 12 a day…sometimes more. Just depends on the way my spine is feeling. But ya know something…about 3 years ago, the feeling of having something in your throat all the time, WENT away. The “not being able to take a full breath” feeling, went away too. This statement is bullshit that ANY AMOUNT of joints IN ONE day is the same as 1 cigarette. I am a great example. I smoke around 2 ounces a week to help with pain, but I can now run a mile. I can exercise without having to stop every 10 minutes to catch my breath. OH AND I STOPPED COUGHING UP YELLOW AND BLACK SHIT FROM MY LUNGS.
Oh yeah…i forgot to add, I am 26. Started smoking cigs when I was 14. Smoked for 8 years-one pack a day. Started smoking pot when I was 12. Smoked off and on til college. NO HEALTH EFFECTS. Smoked heavily from there on out-NO HEALTH EFFECTS. I can say that you could have a study…have 1 person smoke 5 cigs a day for 5 years. then have someone smoke 20 joints a day for 20 years. I bet the stoner is still in better shape….just look at the hippies from the 60′s and 70′s….where is all those people that smoked “killer” weed back in the day? I bet they are at home still smoking a joint. If you find someone that was smoking back in the 60′s and 70′s, they are probably on a resperator or have had SOME kind of health condition caused by smoking….

Todd… by having gay/lesbian its own separate section, may be a negative thing. Showing its like a human rights problem stirs more compassion; could be to portray their inhuman or something by separated them. Or maybe they think it doesn’t deserve to go along with everything else.

Then again, you might be right, I always just try to more than one side.

28 Angela Renee { 03.05.10 at 12:49 pm }

Clarence, regarding keeping violent criminals in jail, can u believe the constant announcements of releasing sex offenders and other violent criminals. All the while how many new possession cases keep filing in. Terrible, I agree we should keep the bad ones in and they’ll have plenty more room with the victimless “offenders” out.

29 Angela Renee { 03.05.10 at 1:01 pm }

I am a former myself (cigs), right out of the Marines I was smoking more than a pack a day. I totally agree there’s differences. Cannabis had none of the phlegm problems. When I started smoking again after I quit a while (cigs), I noticed a lot of mental effects, headaches, demotivated and tired. Weed made me work more and had no chest or other side effects. I’ll be out weeks due to flare ups with autoimmune problems and the weekend I smoke to find some temporary relief, I get caught up in everything and feel great… till I am coerced to quit again.

I want to thank everyone for telling all your positive remarks regarding cannabis. I decided this week that I’m not gonna keep stopping and starting to avoid trouble. I deserve relief more consistenly.

We really need to expand our area of influence. the government is only part of the problem. There are so many corporate lobbist pushing to keep cannibas illegal. Lets take nylon for instance, Dupot chemical was one of the leaders in making cannnibas illegal inthe first place because hemp is the only thing that could compete. We have to start making people see that smoking is only one advantage of the marijuana plant. We can make cotton, nylon, paper and many other products. Not only would this create lots of jobs but would also be environmentally sound. why cut 100″s of acres of rain forrest everyday that takes 100′s of years to grow when we could use a plant that doesnt account for most of our oxygen and only takes a few months to grow. The marijuana plant is 100% usable, hell i had shoes made of hemp once, lasted me years. Dont we give tax breaks to companies who are environmental conscience!!!! Lets get these lobbist on our side.

32 Angela Renee { 03.05.10 at 2:05 pm }

That’s a great idea, or stopping institutions from being manipulated as well. I just saw some info recently regarding Melanie Dreher, RN, PhD; who did a 15 year study of cannabis in Jamaica studying the effects ganja in pregnancy and in children, where down there it is even administered directly to children via teas.

When many works involving neo-natal care and other related matters came about, many studies were included but hers. That limits the positive info as well.

It is blatantly wrong to ignore the facts . The majority of Americans like Marijuana . We are forcing decent people that just want to have some enjoyment … to deal with a criminal element to buy something they like . One that will do whatever neccessary to protect themselves & their businness of selling drugs . Marijuana is not the gateway drug that we were told it was . Cleaned , graded & taxed marijuana is better for everyone , that is except those that sell it illegally . I would rather be surrounded in a room full of people high on Marijuana , rather than a room full of people drunk on whiskey . Please put an end to this Mr. President . Thanks , Russ D.

The thing i am upset with you about Mr. President is that you ignore a large part of your supporters because of the possibility of a radical response. Think of all the people in jail and their families all ruined because their drug of choice wasn’t coffee, cigs, aspirin, Xanax, Alcohol, it was a natural substance which im sure you know isn’t as harmful as any of the above can be. we tried for you to hear us before and won’t stop trying till someone in your position does something to finally help us.

That’s exactly the problem. Industrial Hemp is toooo usefull of a plant. Almost every single industry would be affected if hemp was legalized. I believe corporations would loose billions of dollars and it comes back to the fact that nobody can patent hemp. This country is run by corporations so why would we ever expect them to legalize weed or hemp or any type of marijuana.
We have 14 states that recognize marijuana as a medicinal plant, yet according to federal government it is still a schedule 1 narcotic, which by definition “has no medicinal value”. How the hell does that make sense?
Obama and the rest of the politicians are just puppets on strings of corporations. People never voted to start the prohibition so what makes us think we can end one by voting? Prohibtion was started by the corporations who saw hemp as a major threat to their industries, and prohibition will not end for as long as these corporations run this country. Yes they can adopt to new laws, and adopt to growing hemp and making products out of hemp, but why should they? that would require restructuring, investment, and they already making billions of dollars of the prohibition.
We are living in a country where money is worth a lot more than votes. So as we continue to vote all these people into the office, money continues to rule this country.

I dont mean to sound negative and say that our work to end prohibition is useless. Just saying that the fight is not over and we’ll have to pry that freedom out of corporate’s hands.

Free The Weed. Free The People.

49 Clarence { 03.07.10 at 3:01 pm }

Free the weed, you left out hemp oils,and seed products and seed oil itself. Every industry will feel the impact, one way or the other when hemp becomes legal in all 50 states. That is billions in employment and sales taxes. We will empower ourselves by legalizing hemp, along with cannabis. The lobbiest’s along with their employers will never just let that happen, because of greed.

50 Angela Renee { 03.07.10 at 9:14 pm }

batt mennett…

Hey FreeTheWeed,
I too am very tired of hearing how the “Big Business” would go under if hemp was legal….but here is a question, doesnt hemp need processed and such things done to it to transform it into useable materials? WHY dont they get their foots in the doors while it is new? They would stand to gain TRILLIONS if they would use their heads now and start producing it for tests and find what they need to do in order to gain from hemp. I know in my area of work, LLDPE, plastics, if there is something new, we try to run it to see how we need to adjust our machines to profit from the new resin made….its called growth oppertunities. Only thing is, they are too ignorant to understand this

claygooding:

Candle light service at 4:20 in the afternoon? How about just a rally?

56 FreeTheWeed { 03.08.10 at 1:41 pm }

@JJ – hey man, I think there’s not enough financial data for large corporations to actually start making moves. With the current laws, they are making an X amount of profit from prohibition. What would we be that X amount of profit if marijuana was legalized? How much investment would it require to adjust/purchase new machinery, change marketing strategies and so on. I think there are very few companies who actually have financial analysts working on these numbers, but as long as they continue to turn in profits, it will be very hard to convince them that they can still make money when marijuana and hemp is legalized.
The fact that industrial hemp is sooo much better for the environment should be enough reason to legalize it. The list of possible uses is too extensive to put here, but if i remember correctly there are over 100 household items that can be produced using industrial hemp.

@Claygooding & DarthNole – yeah a candlelight service might not work so well at 4:20 :) but we can all light something else at 4:20 and then light the candles at 8:40

Again, I’m looking for people to get organized and to rally in NYC on 04-20-10

sometimes in America – we get it wrong. Let’s be honest. All men are created equal… yet slavery persisted, freedom and justice for all – except not those who disgust us… a corporation is a person, but I ain’t never seen one serve jury duty… marijuana prohibtion… the 10th amendment re-afirms the people’s natural right to use plants responsibly. Puritansim has infected America even though we think we have separation of Church and State. I never saw a drug free America anywhere in the Constitution. That’s a Puritan ideal of perfection. but the Constitution starts out WE The People, not we the puritans…
marijuana prohibition is unconstitutional!

This is all based on an old study, and a bullshit one at that.
no time to do the research right now to find it all to post here.
1 jay = 10 smokes is what I was told back in grade school in the 70′s and again in the 80′s
Wish I could recall the name of it, and where I found it, but I do not, have to look that up when I have some time.
I recently, with in the last month or so, saw another study that debunked this one. When time allows I will try to find it again and post it here. I am betting that someone knows what Im talking about and can get it faster than I will be able to since my time is short today.

The real bitch of it is that even if its true, even if 1 joint does equal 5 or 10 or 50 smokes, so what? not a single case ever in history that weed CAUSES cancer.
Even if it does contain the stuff they claim. Maybe the other stuff blocks the cancer causers, maybe what we believe causes cancer does not, what if smokes did nothing worse than weed but the shit they add is what causes cancer?

I do love to smoke, however the new utah tax, as well as my age and 20 years of smoking has taken a toll on my brain. Its worse when I am high and smoke one of the little bastards. All I can see in my head is what its doing inside of me.
Its time to quit, gearing up for it in the next few weeks.
In the last year I have gone from 3 packs a day to 3 packs every four days.
Funny thing is I can still run two miles, Iv done 50 mile hikes at altitudes over 10,000 feet in 3 days, I know noone that can keep up with me on the trail. I know they exist, but noone I know personally can. and my backpacking trips? never had one I was not high as the clouds on, and smoking the cancer sticks while I walked along above the tree line.
Gonna miss the bastards, but screwing up the courage to quit them. I gave up drinking and drugs years ago, the drinking 5 years back and the drugs longer than that.
It was easy compared to smokes to get off the cocaine, all the acid, all the bad shit I did to myself. Drinking was a bitch to kick too, outside of a glass of champagne at my brothers wedding last labor day, I have had no drinks in 5 years.
Sometimes I go for weeks with out getting high despite having some primo stash at my hands and it never bothers me. start hitting 3 or 4 hours with out a smoke and I can hardly breath I need one so bad.
I have given up every vice I ever had, with three exceptions.
smokes, weed, and sex.
sex I now limit to my wife, relax, I never cheated on her, been with her 6 years now, she is also off of booze for 5 years. I am getting ready to quit smoking, working up the courage and finding some methods that help deal with the cravings and outright insanity thats taken place when I tried before. I shall however, never give up weed. Legal or not.
I could, I just do not want to. when I can go for weeks or months with out ‘needing’ any its not a matter of if I could stop using it, its a matter of I do not want to.
There are times i enjoy being ripped off my ass, laughing at stupid shit, and some times I do not. setting and whats going on in life play an important role to when its OK to smoke some weed, and when its not OK.
ya know I had a rant in my head but I forgot where I was going with it, started craving a smoke once I started talking about them and thats all I can think about now.
Bad shit, but my final day as a smoker is coming up.

President Obama: I voted for you thinking that you would facilitate legalizing marijuana; I supported your health care plan and now it is your turn to do another brave thing for America: come out and support the legalization of marijuana.
