MPP Responds to Photo of Olympic Champ Caught Smoking Marijuana
MPP’s Bruce Mirken appeared on CNN Sunday night to discuss the news that a 23-year-old American male had been photographed using marijuana at a college party.
Bruce’s interview occurs at about 6:40 on the video below. In it, he shoots down the “gateway” myth, demonstrates prohibition’s many failures, and points out how absurd it is that of the 100 million Americans who have used marijuana, anybody should care that one of them is Michael Phelps.

You mean to tell me that the fastest swimmer on the planet smokes weed? Kinda debunks the claim that pot smokers are lazy and without any motivation.
I just saw on MSNBC that the Sheriff of whatever county that picture was taken in in South Carolina now says hes going to prosecute him if he can prove that hes got Marijuana in the bong. What a complete waste of time and money.
this is just the exposure we needed!!! i liked the apology and i understand why he did apologize BUT i wished he had said something in defense of why he smoked. he didn’t want to apologize you could see it in his eyes( no pun intended) haha. but i bet you he won’t do it again….get caught that is!!! All bong rips to Phelps today! haha
I always like to ask “If cannabis is such a “Gateway Drug” and close to 1/3rd of the U.S. population has tried it… where are all the addicts?”
or better yet…if its sooooo horrific and it kills…where are all the bodies? i can’t believe in this day and age, pot is illegal. it just baffles the mind….something that doesn’t have to be distilled, refined, processed or touched by mans dirty hands…except to harvest of course.
when people ask that stupid question…”well if you legalize pot where does it stop?”
i’ll tell you where it stops….if its natural and doesn’t need to processed, distilled or cooked up in a lab by man…then it should be legal. coke, heroin, meth, opiates all have to be manufactured or processed by man….those should remain illegal. hell….i think cigs and alcohol should be illegal more than pot!
I want to thank you for inviting me to read this transcript. However there is one comment within the transcript quoted by Bruce Mirken which is incorrect. He said that “Marijuana is less addictive” I speak on behalf of those many who have experienced what real drug, alcohol and even cigarette addiction is, in having to say that Marijuana though having enjoyable properties, it is not the type of stimulant that beckons its call upon the user to do it over and over again without discretion. It is the uneducated novice user who gambles with its abuse and like a new found toy he or she has to flaunt it to get people’s attention, that they have discovered something new and wonderful to them. Anyone who has any respect for Marijuana knows that rolling giant joints and exhibiting large bowels in smoking through bongs is frankly a waste of the product’s usefulness. Marijuana has its place in the world for its use, but it is not to be put into the hands of criminals and the young who have no respect for it properties.
Ray makes a very good point that debunks the “gateway theory”. But I also don’t understand why a few more points aren’t brought up when the “gateway theory” is mentioned. First, if the theory is saying that marijuana use leads individuals to use more harmful, harder drugs…. such as coke, heroin, etc… then the theory itself is an argument for reclassifying marijuana. Obviously the “theory” admits coccaine and heroin or more serious drugs, so why would marijuana be classified as a Schedule I drug like these other hard drugs?
Secondly, and along the same lines, any data that supports the “gateway theory” should quickly be debunked by explaining that by classifying marijuana as a Schedule I drug you basically telling people that it is equivelant to drugs like heroin, meth, or coccaine. If it was reclassified and rescheduled correctly… then we’re not sending the signal that heroin and meth are no worse than marijuana.
Well put Brad. Those were some great points. I was very pleased with Bruce’s responses. I thought he did very well.
here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkzhtjRuOAc
bruce is on around 6:50 or so, but it’s all worth watching
Great job Bruuuuuuce! Don Lemon seemed rushed and distracted and Bruce was smooth and got his point across. Well done!
Thanks for finding the video, Jay. I updated my post with the embed. — Dan
Cannabis is not a gateway drug because so many people only use marijuana. no one’s ever died from it so why is it considered the same as crack all the time. that’s like saying Tylenol will lead you to heroine. which is actually closer than marijuana. Tylenol is processed, and mixed, and derived from a plant just like heroin. marijuana is the most pure thing anyone uses besides spices. use common sense or at least make one state completely legal as a sort of test. I bet it would work great.
I am a recovering heroin addict that was told for years as a child how bad cannabis is .. well i tried it and guess what they lied i didnt get addicted i didnt steal or loose my family and home ..I figured what the hell they lied about cannabis they probably lied about coke and dope. I am now 46 yrs old and have been clean 8 yrs . I still smoke cannabis for my arthritis.. but they did not lie about coke and dope . I wish i had known before . i lost my kids my home my teeth etc. etc. it is time to stop the lie’s about cannabis before they ruin another generation with their B.S. the following are the reasons harry anslinger gave for making cannabis illegal in the USA
“…the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.”
“Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.”
“Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”
“Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing”
“You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.”
“Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”
This guy was on his game, we’re finally getting some good face time in the media.
wait….werent he supposed to be lazy or not being able to swim so much cause his lungs are ”being damaged” or even being lazy??!???!!!!?legalize cannabis now hey its not crack or better yet to say its NOT TOBACCOO WICH KILLS 5,000,000 ANNUALLY WORLDWIDE…Cannabis 0,000,000…any questions?
He should have mentioned that marijuana itself is not a gateway drug, but because you have to buy it from illegal sources, that’s why then you may be exposed to more harmful ones. If it were legal then that wouldn’t happen, you’d buy it regulated and safely.
marihuana is a gateway drug…a gate-way to rapturous euphoria….6 is 9…
marihuana is a gateway drug…A gate-way to harmonic ecstasy…6 is 9
Great appearance Bruce! Phelps seems to be weathering this without too many scars, and I think the sheriff in SC will shut up before anyone is arrested.
As to whether this helps or hurts, I think the more we can stand up in the media and make the point that marijuana is safer than alcohol, the better. I want to see MPP get Phelps to speak out for THEM. Maybe in a couple years when his endorsements are up he’ll be ready for something like that…
I think they should just legalize it! Shoot, Phelps won 8 Gold medals, where can i get some of that stuff?
He cannot charge Phelps, it was mine.
Bruce is the man!!! The movement to end cannabis prohibition needs a lot of media attention now that we’re in this political climate of change. The public needs a lot of education to dispel 30 years of alarmist propaganda and we need Bruce on TV as often as possible because he’s calm, charming, intelligent and great at pulling out relevant points eloquently during a fast-paced interview.
Great to see the attention this is creating. Can SOMEONE PLEASE debunk the gateway theory when on TV representing MPP? That’s twice now (Aaron Houston) where the chance to squash that theory has not been taken advantage of on national TV. Learn to interrupt these talking heads on the networks. They prove time and again that they won’t let people talk or prove a point, no matter the topic. Just talk over their empty heads and make your point MPP! You guys are calm cool and collected, but that’s not the name of the TV game. Good job overall, keep up the good work and fighting the right fight!
the only reason phelps appologized is to keep his endorsements, but that doesn’t mean he won’t smoke marijuana again, that just means he will be smarter about smoking it and getting caught as “THEY” say!! And i really do believe the fact that PHELPS smokes marijuana is going to help get marijuana legalized and push the U.S. Government and President Obama to finally decide to tax the harmless herb…….That is……once the economy is fixed!! And it would be great that if they do decide to finally sign to legalize and tax marijuana, Phelps comes forward and helps to push the legalization of the “HARMLESS NATURAL HERB”!!
AWWWWWW BOO-HOOO!! He was my son’s role model, I held him in high esteeeeem!! BOOO-HOOO! He dissapoints me! Like your liniment using ass hasn’t ever done anything percieved by the stupid majority as wrong. Get a life you bunch of Pharmaceutical taking imbeciles… He’s young, he’s alive, and he shouldn’t have apologized for jack shit. He wasn’t drinking, snorting, or shooting up. He is indulging in the safest therapeutical substance known in EXISTENCE. Tell the silly sheep to get their asses off of their shoulders, and let this man live. You weren’t saying a damn thing when he was making our corrupt ass country look good. SHUT UP!
So he smokes pot?! What about the other role models that smoke pot or do heavier more dangerous drugs?! He’s 23, so what. Pot is not dangerous there’s no way to OD on it, obviously he can achieve dreams and goals high or not. People need to back off.
Hey he should have been doing a keg stand, and smoking a Cowboy Killer…maybe Bud and Marlboro would have given him some more endorsement money. Cannabis is normal.
Good job Bruce, you did great thanks for standing up for him and all of us.
Phelps has ADHD. I bet he was just self medicating.
Marijuana will only be legalized if government can figure out a way to make money on it.
If we’re serious about securing our borders, protecting our children from drug-dealing murderers, AND pumping some much-needed revenue into the public treasury, we’ll implement a Personal Use and Cultivation Permit, similar to a fishing permit, allowing ordinary Americans to grow a little marijuana in their own back yards. Sold by the States and splitting the revenue 50-50 with the Federal treasury, it the permit cost $100 per year, and if even one-third of the estimated 30Million Americans who use marijuana each year were to obtain such a permit, it would pump a Billion dollars into the public pocketbook AND rip the guts out of the criminal drug gangs’ cash flow. Right now, we put our own children in prison with violent criminals for doing something that both our current Democratic President and the recent Republican Vice Presidential candidate acknowledge having done themselves. Let’s put the drug dealing criminals out of business and let ordinary Americans grow a little marijuana in their own back yards.
At least Phelps is smart enough to know that cannabis is better and safer than a can a beer
Why is it such a shock to so many Americans that busy people use marijuana to relax, to slow down, to take a damn brake from all the world’s demands on us as workers, representatives, ect.???
Get Phelps and an mmp rep. to go on Larry King. The time is ripe f or the American public to be educated @ cannabis. It’s an interesting story. Maybe Michael Moore could make his next documentary on the subject. I have progressive MS and I look forward to a Federal legalization of marijuana at LEAST for medical purposes. All prior comments I read were encouraging!
First, Phelps: Cheers! I also am sad that he has to be apologetic because of the public and his “fans.”
Second, I get so excited when I hear or read about the media discussing marijuana. It’s nice to think that the general public is actually seeing what damage the government is doing and what a waste this drug war is.
Boycott Kellogg’s products and complain to them about their bad choice to punish a man for doing what many great American’s do all the time. http://www2.kelloggs.com/

Subject: Michael Phelps

Dear Mr. Woodall,
Just to inform you, because of your position on the issue of Phelps
Smoking from a Bong, I will no longer be buying any Kellogg’s
Products. I find it appaulling that you would drop this guy’s
contract for smoking a little Cannabis, A Plant. Would you prefer he
drink a pint of Jim Beam instead? Get drunk, crash a car, and maybe
kill some one? The only message he sent to the entire public
was “It is ok to smoke Cannabis and still achieve GRRRREATNESS!!!”
Michael Phelps is an inspiration. I am in hopes that this incident can show America that there are several high profile individuals that use marijuana who are great people! Maybe this will help to open eyes and change laws to decriminalize Marijuana.
Kellogs has dropped Phelps from their sponsorship.
I say BOYCOTT KELLOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree, it would of been nice of Phelps would of just owned up and said “so what”, but in reality he deserves the sponsorships he earned. It is unfortunate all this “political correctness”. 100 million americans have smoked cannabis, it is the norm not something unusual.
Boycott Kellogs! Especially in Michigan where we passed Medical Marijuana and in Calhoun County, where Kellogs world headquarters are located..
A gateway drug? what a joke I am a recovering coke-meth addict. I am now a Med M patient. I use it for all of my serious back injuries. Torn discs, ruptured discs, herniated discs, and compressed discs in my neck. Somehow I am not looking for more coke or meth, what a concept. Some days when I am without pain I don’t even smoke, hmm is there some contradiction between the FDA lies and and the AMA lobbyist lies, hmmmmmm I think so. Marijuana smokers don’t drive and kill, and are not violent. people who are already predisposed to violent behavior are violent, so let’s at least play by the rules of intilectual engagement here. This is a well accomplished man who decided to use the safest drug on planet earth because he knew and understood the value of his liver and the outcome of an alcoholic liver. Why isn’t anyone applauding him for not frying the liver he needs to be a successful athlete???? The liver is the detox center focus organ, which he did the least harm too. This country is so worried about things that add up to nothing we don’t even notice when major nuclear warheads go missing and stay missing under the great Bush administration, which cannot be moved without the president’s approval and signature. We have a broken arrow and no one is talking about it and Bush and Cheney got away the biggest act of treason in our country’s history, but hey let’s attack the weed smoking athlete who won the gold, Praise the lord and stay stupid America you got the government and media you want and deserve. Sleep fools and get even more what you deserve.
Honstly cannabis is the safest medicine in the world! I feel it’s a better choice than alchohol. You can take away his sponsors but you can’t take away his medals. He did nothing wrong! The person who exploited that photo was bong wrong. No one has ever died from cannabis! legalize no more legal lies!
Good show, Bruce, you did a fine job of rebutting the gateway drug talking point in this appearance.
I think it would have been an excellent followup to note that when authorities perpetuate easily debunked myths like this (today’s American teenagers know how to use wikipedia and Teh Google) about claimed harms due to marijuana, they are undermining the credibility of other, more valid health messages to young people. Important warnings to kids about actual dangers such as STDs, drunk driving, etc. just carry less impact and are less effective when the same authorities at the same time are using transparent falsehoods to try to demonize cannabis. If you want to help kids stay safe, tell them the truth.
OH MY DEAR GOD!!! Michael Phelps took a bong hit, I bet he’s gonna stick up a 7/11 and rape the elderly now.
is this really that big of a deal? do you really think he’s the first olympian to use cannabis?
So he is endorsed by HILTON> ANYONE SEEN THE VIDEO OF PARIS HILTON IN AMSTERDAM AT A COFFEESHOP SMOKING A BOWL GETING RIPPED WITH HER BOYFRIEND? There is so much hypocricy in America, it’s time to decrim. with alcohol and tobacco, its so obvious and the lies have been found out! So Kellogs needs to loose some business , all pot heads alike or not , should unite and boycott KELLOGS and anyones else that drops him. If he had a JACK DANIELS in hand , nothin. The media never allows enough time to get important points about cannabis thru.
Crocodiledundee: you said it, the only reason they say it’s a gatyeway, is because you can only get it on the black market which exposes you to harder drugs. Don’t forget cannabis makes whit women sleep with black men. Alcohol was once illegal too, now it’s the very fabric of social behavior.
ive seen threw out the years more people smoking ist more commen then we think. yes alot of our presidents smoke cannabis and they say its a gateway drug so if so did the presidents become addicts NO .but check it out ,mr.x president bush was a alcoholic and was a regular cocaine addict.from expirience IT STARTS WITH ALCOHOL THEN LEADS TO TOBACCO AND SO ON.JUST ASK YOUSELF WITCH IS THE LESS HARMFULL ….
This is just such nonsense, I can hardly believe the whole thing!

I wish Michael was brave enough (and this would take some courage – don’t know that I’d have the balls at 23 years old) to say “Screw you, Kelloggs. Marijuana safer than beer, doesn’t hurt anyone. I’ve smoked it, I inhaled and I’m still an Olympic athlete. Clearly motivated and not a bum. Get over it.”
That day is coming, we are fed up with the failed war on drugs and being stomped on!!! My dear Florida has more people in jail than any other state. A travesty.
I nominate Michael for the spokesperson for MPP. Probably doesn’t pay as good as Kelloggs…

A young man who smokes a little pot can win all those Olympic medals.
Unnecessary hypocritical responses by the lilly-white corporate communities.
I am a 60 yr old gramma. I have seen countless lives and families torn apart by alcohol. Including my parents, grandparents, children, friends, neighbors, coworkers, etc. The toll is horrific.
But I have never seen a life or a family torn apart by pot. No blackouts, No physical, emotional, mental abuse fueled by booze.
No domestic violence.
Legalize it!! I am boycotting Kelloggs!! And I am telling my friends to.
I am Boycotting Kelloggs et ALL Product Kellogg brands

Dear Mr. President:
Having smoked marijuana “in the past” does not disqualify one from being a police officer, a judge, an Olympic Athlete, a political candidate, or even being elected President of the United States, and why should it?
After all, smoking marijuana is a fairly harmless pastime. In America, as well as in other parts of the world, it is often a rite of passage.
Two recent unrelated news items, connected by a common thread, caught my attention. Neither is earth-shattering, nor should they be. The President of the United States’ half-brother was arrested in Kenya and charged with possession of marijuana. A few days later a British tabloid published a photograph of Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps, smoking cannabis.
Neither of these events caused major scandals. The world knows that when it comes right down to it, marijuana is “no big deal”. According to a study cited in the U.S. News & World Report, 42% of Americans have sampled reefer, in spite of it being illegal.
Marijuana has a minimal effect on people’s lives. There are way more important matters at hand. Marijuana is really no big deal, unless you or someone you care about is in prison because of laws prohibiting marijuana.
I am currently a marijuana prisoner, incarcerated in the Federal Prison Camp at Jesup, Georgia. Approximately 10% of the prisoners here are serving sentences for marijuana only. The waste and absurdity of incarcerating someone for supplying a product that nearly half of all Americans have used, with no particular negative affect, challenges description.
Every year, more Americans are arrested on marijuana charges. Every arrest negatively affects a daisy chain of family, friends and community. Lives are put on hold while they sit in jails and prisons. Jobs are lost. Families go without income. Homes are lost. The productive capacity of the incarcerated lies fallow.
Millions of Americans have marijuana histories. Some become athletes. Some are elected to public office. Some of us go to Federal Prison.
It’s time to reevaluate America’s marijuana policy. It is time to let the marijuana prisoners go home and those in the marijuana underground join the mainstream. After the Vietnam War ended, war resistors were given amnesty. After the U.S. Civil War, Confederate prisoners were released and returned to their communities. There is a time to heal all wounds.
It is now our time, Mr. President. It’s time to free the marijuana prisoners and end the War on Marijuana.
Most Respectively Yours,
Harold Baranoff
Marijuana P.O.W.
FINALLY!!! THANK U!!…..can somebody give that man a medal?? I am sooooo glad those sweet words were said on a national platform– “for relaxing with something that’s less harmful than a beer.” I am a toker that has listen to many of my peers talk sh!t cuz I would rather smoke than drink…….and, yes, we(my girlfriend & I) are boycotting Kellogg products as well.
Interesting thought…….in 2004 he was caught for the DUI….now in 2009 he gets caught smoking marijuana…..to me it seems like alcohol played more of the “GATEWAY” drug than marijuana did. I’ll admit i’ve done my fair share of drinking in the day, but I don’t drink anymore and prefer to just stay home and enjoy my own fat rip. I dont, however, feel that Phelps should have had to apologize for smoking a bowl.Especially when he didnt really do anything wrong and he didn’t hurt anyone.
People wake up
Everyone should know. The true gate way drugs are caffeine and suger.
Wheres the proof ?? I see a man holding a Bong I dont see any smoke ? Even If I did see smoke Id say toke on !! Does anybody here know how dang many Calories that guy has to eat a day just to stay his wieght ?Geeeez,Maybe somebody said he’d get the munchies if he tried it After all theres still no truth unless drug tested and then it could be a contact High at best.Geeeez a guy does something Great for his Country and already his Country wants to Hang Him
Maybe the Fastest swimmer should try meth win a race and then go Robb a Bank ? Albuqueque, New Mexico has a Bank Robbery every other day . It not because they are smoking pot ,I dont think. Oh well what do I know
test post… cant see my previous post nor a confirmation…
In april of 2007 I was arrested in Houston county alabama for growing 42 plants, about 35 of them no more than an inch tall. I made the front page of the Dothan (Alabama) Eagle. On 4/20/2007 (I thought the 4/20 part was ironic). This entire damned experience has lasted almost two years.Despite the economy .I am forced to live in this redneck,conservative,Bush-loving republican hellhole. I am guilty of growing a plant. Not rape or robbery.I will do whatever I can to help this cause because I firmly believe in it. I am very anti-drug when it comes to coke , meth. etc. The (legal drug suppliers) have created more addicts with oxycontin alone than pot ever has or ever. the next time you hear from me I might be in prison.feb 17 is my sentencing date. All of you clear thinking (potheads) out there, Please pray for me
Hmmm Montel Williams, Benjamin Franklin, and now Michael Phelps have all smoked weed and look at them ha
I wonder how many politician’s Kellogg gives money to that admit to smoking marijuana? They did this knowingly because the politician’s all admitted while running Obama, Clinton all of them..
all those brands best coustamers are pot smokers
People, get real, why are you attacking Kelloggs? You piss and moan about the economy. Spew partisan BS. And attack a company that supports families and communities. It’s stupid. They have to do what they think will be good for business. Any of you ever ran a business? You know, a real one, where the customers aren’t stoned and can put you on the streets in a minute.
Your cause is just. Millions believe in it. That is true. But please attack the lawmakers not a business that has no lawmaking authority and is just trying to make money. Yes, money. To pay the workers. To pay the retirees. To pay uncle sam and obama. You want to tax the ganj to pay the bills? Great. Do it. Start by calling your congressman not Tony the tiger.
Legalize pot!!!! Come on cigarettes are legal and how many people a year die from cancer or other problems stemming from cigarettes and how many people a year die from smoking pot need I say more!!!!
more people have been killed and families torn apart by Marijuana Laws than by Marijuana.
think of it this way:
imagine every cops episode you’ve ever seen. how many of those videos portrayed some poor black guy running from 4 overweight white police officers because he had some chronic on him. what they don’t show are all the people who run because they are in possession and are killed as a result of the ensuing car/foot chase.
how many people are killed by deals gone bad because they were forced to deal with some sketchy dude who sells meth to highschoolers
how many families are destroyed because someone went to jail for possession, intent to sell, or distribution (possession doesn’t really apply in the US)
how many families are torn apart because some member of said family are so brainwashed by anti-marijuana propoganda, and then find out their kid smokes/deals
now compare that to the number of people who have been killed as a direct result of using marijuana: ZERO
I also find it extremely Ironic that Kellogs makes such delicious Muchie food as the rice krispy, cheese it, eggo, and pop-tart. i’m still boycotting them
remember kids:
stay above the influence… of marijuana laws
- self examination- remains the most overlooked responsibility to-date. This is the easy way to live, basing our beliefs on other people’s, also unproven belief.
Self examination requires the courage to encounter the unknown, and leaves in its wake a kind of self-awareness that, by its nature, stops people from finger pointing, judgement and blame.
Phelps is just another of innumerable examples of how people order their lives, and the morality upon which they derive truth; around the behaviour and beliefs of other people.
Everyone one of us, barring none, speak inauthentically out of personal history. Until we grasp this simple fact, our voices will never, ever speak anything worth while, nor will we offer to anyone insights that may, by their sheer originality, wake up the world to other possibilities.
Ours is a life lived through history, not from the future, but from the past. In this way we assure ourselves a familiar future, where our conflicts are the cause of everyone but ourselves, and where no resolution resides.
As usual the United States of America does not learn from past mistakes as Prohibition. Legalizing so called “drugs” would
remove the black market and give people control rather than
let the drug dealers control.
So lets get on the ball. Legalize and take control ab=way from
the drug dealers.
It would also be much les expensive as there would be fewer
arrests and need for prisions for nonviolent people.
I do not understand what the big deal is. I have seen atheletes consume a highly addictive drug, which causes irational, and violent behavior. The producers, and sellers of this drug pump millions, if not billions of dollars into pushing their “product” on the American public. They advertise this product on billboards along our highways, flashy commercials on TV, and adds in our news papers. This is all visible to our children. What kind of message does that send our kids?
One more thing. There ARE compounds in the marijuana plant that can CURE CANCER. I know, I have done it.
Whether you agree that marijuana safe to use or not a harmful substance…are you all forgetting that it is still ILLEGAL!!!!!! Kelloggs has every right to do what they did in this case. Someone who they sponsor publicly broke the law. They dont want representing their company. I dont see the problem here. It’s against the law. He did it. He should pay the consequences.
Leave him the Hell Alone and Get the Real Criminals…
Or try it youself!!!!!!
this comment is for jim hemmerich .. i have been smoking “canibas .. for years now and im not really addictined .. Marijuana is NOT the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind. ..
The argument that it’s ILLEGAL didn’t stop Bush and Cheney from torture. They got away with it so why should anyone not do something just because it’s illegal? That argument doesn’t fly any better than pigs do.
Jerry,
Thanks. I’ve wondered for a long time, why we should obey the law when law makers do not. It appears laws are created for the convenience of those who decide what is, and is not lawful.
If law makers want to control society, in a way that is peaceful and easy going, then pot should be legalized.
In the mean time it is our responsibility to keep growing, smoking and enjoying the fruit of the good earth. And, if that’s to easy, and ineffectual, then …
perhaps we should organize a permanent boycott of not only Kellogg’s, but Exxon, mobile, edys ice cream, HBO, the Comedy channel, ITunes, federal, state an local taxes, and EVERYTHING but the absolute bare necessities of life. Until we take radical action there will never be any incentive for the system to change.
Just how much DO YOU support the curent system by your lifestyle? Just how resposible are YOU in maintaining the status quo?
Since your argument is “They got away with it so why should anyone not do something just because it’s illegal?”
Then I guess we can do anything illegal if someone in authority over us does it? So if a president has an affair we can do that too? or if a president lies that makes lying ok?
WOW. The last time I checked consenual sex is not illegal. Lying about it to a grand jury is. Lying to the American people about weapons of mass destruction in the state of the union address is also illegal. Are you trying to say that you have never lied? Consenual sex is none of my business. Smoking pot is none of your business. Don’t let the government control your life over lies. Don’t let them kill your children over lies either.
they should just fight fire with fire. legalize cannabis and cultivate it and use the revenues to helps schools and to hire more police to actually patrol our boarders and fight the drugs that are still getting into this country. hell what they’re doing now isn’t working. you know that when we still have such big drug issues in the united states. they probally could solve a lot of budget issues as well. seens how it is our nations number one cash crop
just think about the amount of money each state spends fighting cannabis, and all the money spent in prisons on people being held for cannabis. UM and now the states are asking for how much stimilis money. and i don’t know where you all are from but around here the schools seem to be closing at an alarming rate because of budgit short falls. they just need to quit fighting it and legalize it, it’s going to happen sooner or later
Here’s the deal. Every law maker in this country is an elected official. That means that we have been putting people in office who apparently don’t share many of our views on this subject, and alot of other topics it seems. We, the People, need to change who we’re putting in office to make the laws in this country.
And a quick message to Kellogg’s Cereal. Sugar is more of an abused drug than is Cannibis. I would like to see someone swim even 1 lap in an olympic sized pool after eating just 1 bowl of your sugar infested cereal. Your company can rot in hell!!!!!
So if MJ is a gateway drug, why is it that everyone i have ever talked to, has ALWAYS started with Alcohol and Cigarettes? Also, in order to overdose from weed you would have to smoke 15 pounds of ultra good weed, in less than one minute. It is not physically possible to overdose on it, and there are millions who die from alcohol and cigarettes every year, it is proven to be safer.
Dopers are in the minority for a reason. Dope is wrong! Every doper knows that, but is in denial. You remember when you were 14 trying pot for the first time? Why are you lying about pot? Because you know the scene! You’ve been there . . . or else you wouldn’t have an opinion about it. You say pot and pot-heads are benign? Bull! To a doper nothing is more important to them than their dope. That’s the problem! Dopers would waste somebody for disagreeing with them about this issue. You try to pull dope away from them and watch out. The cops have reason to worry about taking you down. If dope ain’t that big a deal, why you ready to go to jail for it? If it wasn’t that big, you’d turn away. “It’s not that important,” you’d say.
You pull that crap into your lungs, you don’t care much about your life. Don’t care much about other people either. I’ve been down that road. Kids have a good excuse, not adults. Gateway? What does that mean? You get high now on pot, you will take anything that comes along. That’s the way it is. And there is a load of stuff coming! Call me a liar. The candy store is open. But dope ain’t candy and you kids will be forever young if you don’t watch out. Look at Neil! He’s still an adolescent!
I heard the news and bought some wholesome Kellogg’s cereal
What are you doing, Dad?
I’m having cereal. You be a good boy and don’t use any dope, because you know it ain’t good for you. It’ll hurt you.
Yeah, I know, Dad. I hope I meet people like you who care about things.
People will hurt you, son.
@Alan
Wow man calm down, just because you had a horrible drug-escapading adventure, doesn’t mean that would happen to everyone else that ever smokes marijuana. As far as I’m concerned if you move onto other drugs afterwards, you were looking for more to begin with…me nor anyone I know has every done more because of weed. You make it sound like once you get high the universe is over and all druggy hell breaks loose! AHHH OH NO I GOT HIGH NOW I NEED TO DO LINES OF COKE AND THEN DROPS OF ACID!! lol reality check. Why don’t you protest something that causes more problems to people like alcohol…ever heard of the damage drunk drivers cause?
Come on, Anonymous. Nothing I said got through to you. Maybe not you. Somebody else might see better than you do right now. I’m not giving up on you.
You know you can use only pot and still be excessive? Look at the time and expense spent on all the varieties of pot. You tell me you then look at a some hashish and say “No, I have some self control in my life.” You want to say now that these are the same thing? How about some opium now? I see some self deception there, Anon.
Comparing dope to alcohol. This is a lame argument, man. Of course alcohol is killing people. Don’t take alcohol and acetominophen. People, right now, are having liver transplants. I heard it on ReachMD. Don’t mix alcohol and pills for Pete’s sake. But what are you telling me? Nothing. You use dope and everything fades to gray. Anything I say here means little with the effects of drugs on you. My words are bland and uninteresting. So go do some dope. But I’m telling you, you don’t need it. You can get “high” other ways. You like science? Art? Music? They say Hendrix was drugs. Drugs ain’t everything. He was very serious about music. You can write a song about anything.
Man, I’ve been places you wouldn’t believe! I borrowed that line from Charles Manson.
That is some serious evilness….Kelloggs. 90%+ of that garbage no human should be consuming. How sad we need to remind people to boycott. People should be outspoken about being tricked through fanciful, scientific English language into basically consuming toxins for generations. It appears to be all one interrelated nightmare. As far as concerns Mr. Phelps…you gotta speak-up dude. I know you didn’t ask to be in this position, but you are and it is a very powerful position indeed.
I see now how the alcohol defense fails for another reason. Those who would use it are only confirming the existence of a “gateway” which is located at the liquor store. While denying it exists, it is confirmed. How do you explain that?
The gateway is a gateway to what? I think it can be an entrance to a world or lifestyle that can end in self-destruction. Its true Anonymous about my escapades. Drugs are powerful. More powerful than I was. I can tell you what it’s like to wake up in terror and withdrawal with a freight train running through the room. Near death. Terrible. Horrible. Alone. Nobody there to help. Well maybe its just me.
Boycott, mrandmrskindbud? You have a choice. You want to take something you already possess? How kind are you? You care anything about the ones getting their heads cut off now in Mexico? You are very selective with your benevolence. There is a direct, immediate link between you, your filthy habits, and death and you ignore it. Yet you pretend to be a person who cares about the planet. Probably have cute bumper stickers on your car.
Don’t get too hung up on right and wrong. Evil, if there is such a thing, will take care of itself. You might wake up someday and morph into something else. We are becoming something else all the time. Look at anything. It changes. The more we know. That’s one reason why you don’t really need drugs. Experience. Contemplation of life is psychedelic. Drugs don’t make it so.
I see you, man.
Drugs are an anesthetic. The liberal administration is in favor of this. Union members, all. Of course they like complacency. They teach it in the schools. La Cosa Nostra. “Our Thing.” The game is fixed. Former radicals like Clinton are sullen, narcoleptic fishmongers. You got pot heads growing tits. Fat people sitting at computer terminals. They got no balls. You got Al Gore. He got a medal, Nobel Prize, for doing nothing, and by some accounts, too late. The polar bears are gripping the last bits of ice in the sea. These are the ultimate consumers. They consume that which does not exist. Children are sacrificed for the greater greedy good. Obamaites are like sheep working for the shepherd. Gathering up resources like the greediest oilmen. Why? Because they deserve all they can get. You don’t need talent or ability to get ahead. Pigs at the trough get what they can get. Oink. Oink.
Mrandmrskindbud does not have a car and is very concerned about what is happening throughout the planet. Cannabis is wonderful. It should not be abused, but instead used to open our minds and listen and observe. Sometimes I get high when I am to lazy to fetch or prepare some food or there just isn’t any available. Quite often, my appetite will go missing when I am high. Imagine that. That being said, I think one can live a fascinating and very enriching life without ever touching alcohol, cannabis or any other type of illicit or licit drug.
Alan
I enjoyed the duscussion abouut pot and the the remarks thanks for inviting me. I agree pot isnt good for young adults. But its is painfully obiveous that making it illegal brings more harm than good exm. (head chopping in Mexico) The fact is you cannt legustrate morality. The cost to society far out weighs the cost to the individual and to put salt on the wound pot is still acessable. Personaly I believe any that makes pot accessable to anyone under the age of 21 such suffer captial punishment. Legalise and tax it dismantle the DEA and address the bastards that brought us to fanical ruin but what do I know I am just the poor republian entrupenuner in society today.
I agree. No, you can’t legislate morality. Families are not democratic, either. You tell your kids what to do because you love them. They don’t have a clue what life is about. We sure don’t need the government going against the family, do we?
I’m no legal expert. We’re talking about more than someone’s idea of morality. The laws against drugs are reasonable, made by reasonable people. The law is not applied fairly, however. The Wall Street dealers, people on K-Street handing out drugs and money have killed us. Coke up the nose. We need government to protect us from ourselves, unfortunately. Just as we need Military to protect us from enemies outside the USA. You can’t argue with drug users about this. This is the point I made earlier. With drug use, everything fades to gray. If it was up to me, I’d have a Drug Day in Washington. There would be soldier with an M16 standing there watching while Wall Street and our Gov’t workers pissed in a cup.
You can take your ideas of morality and put them in your smoking pipe. Our government and society has collapsed heavily because of drugs. You are living in a smoky dream world, sir, if you think you can measure the harm that has been done by drugs. You can’t measure human suffering. If you could, people would hear the screams of murdered people. Drug users are not so inclined to see the real world. That’s the problem. Morph out of this, man.
We have rights in America and responsibilities. Capital Punishment for drug use? This ain’t China.
You want taxes? You’re way out there, man. Who wants more taxes? You look at your check lately?
Let me lay something else on you. See if you can morph out of this one. You meet some of your friends, give each other a mogambo handshake, whatever. You sit down and pass a joint. You feel connected. That means something to you, but what is it really? I tell you now it’s depravity. If those people were your friends they would tell you, “Don’t do this.” They are not your friends. They would tell you what you were in for. You ever see that commercial on TV in the 80’s , Yul Brenner said in a low rumbling voice, “Don’t Smoke.” This is an important concept.
Most of the kids haven’t been around long enough to put two and two together. That is what makes drug use insidious. You ever hear of Jim Jones and the Temple of Doom. No, that was Harrison Ford. Those people were like me and you. They went to the jungle to find something good. The concept is the same. Why don’t you tell the truth about drugs? My heart is broken. I am wasted because of drugs. My family is nothing now. My country is dying.
