“The marijuana patches don’t bother me, but I don’t like the shootouts.”

The cost of pointless marijuana eradication efforts in California went up Wednesday when sheriff’s deputies shot and killed an unidentified man while hiking around in the woods looking for clandestine grow sites.

It is currently unknown whether this man was involved in marijuana cultivation, whether he was armed or fired at deputies, or even if there was any marijuana found nearby. Authorities are being typically tight-lipped about the entire incident.

What is known, beyond any doubt, is that eradication efforts are a complete failure, despite a huge fiscal and human cost.

Every year, state and local law enforcement agents suit up in camouflage and spend weeks going on hiking trips or flying around in helicopters looking for marijuana. They spend vast amounts of money trying to find more marijuana than previous years, in order to be eligible for federal funds that they, in turn, spend on finding more marijuana the next year.

And sometimes, people die. Whether in shootouts with criminal cultivators (and possibly innocent hikers) or in accidents in the rugged terrain, people are hurt and killed every year during eradication efforts.

And yet, both legal and illicit marijuana is still plentiful in California. So what is worse, the “problem” or the “solution?”

According to one local business-owner, the answer is obvious:

“We see something like this every once in a while, you know, there’s a lot of these marijuana patches out this way,” said Howard Miller, 69, owner of the Junction Bar and Grill Restaurant at 47300 Mines Road, which claims to be “as close to the Old West as you can get.”

“The marijuana patches don’t bother me,” Miller said. “But I don’t like the shootouts.”

Perhaps the cowboys in camouflage do, since they consistently rally against the one thing that would eliminate illicit growing on public land and end this tragic farce: taxing and regulating marijuana.

I guess it made them feel good on what they have done. I’ve wonder if they posed next to the dead man for a group photo.

It looks like there is a typo in the title that should say bother, instead of other? Can that be fixed.

If i kill someone its called murder and i go to prison and my life is finished. When the DEA kills someone it’s in the name of the war on drugs to protect us. some how the DEA doesn’t make me feel safer.

Good catch! Thanks.

I recently read an article somewhere which stated that we had basically given away our sovereignty on certain border areas due to their being so dangerous in terms of smuggling activities. The law doesn’t go there either because it is too dangerous (interpret as the smugglers shoot back when fired upon, unlike many other areas of the country) for them. When all of it gets like that, when the law comes face to face with a determined citizenry, that is when the war on us through drugs will end. Sad to say, but it is always the ammo box that creates change. The ballot box may reflect this change, but only after the citizenry shows it will not bend on the issue.

So , when will they start raiding homes of computer owners, these micro grows are so dangerous you know. The deaths of these dregs of the world dont matter just more money for more eradication!!

When will these idiots see they CAN NOT EVER rid the world of this very useful PLANT !! The stuff grows all over the world ! They would have to level anything that grow …ALL OVER THE WORLD…to make sure they get every last plant, every last seed. ITS IMPOSSIBLE!!!

Oh wait, these zealots just might do something like that.

I’ve guess no one thought of capturing the hiker alive. Anyway they got it all under control.

10 perspective { 07.23.10 at 12:12 am }

what is funny is they call marijuana a controlled substance. Controlled is not the term because there is no control over marijuana, in most states for the most part, but killings brain washing and hypocrisy.

I’m just saying that if marijuana was a “controlled” substance it would be regulated, taxed, and sold with the watchful eyes of legitimate businesses and overseers not causing violence on both sides of the fence.

11 Jim Lunsford { 07.23.10 at 6:31 am }

Perspective, it is controlled very well. By keeping it in this status, the DEA is able to justify their existence, minority groups are able to be repressed, money is made in the prison system, and it is an excellent barometer for gauging social control of the masses. Add to this, as long as marijuana is demonized there will be no hemp grown for fuel, textiles, other industrial, or food. The criminal elements of our present ruling class (which would be all of them) will be able to continue to make tons of money off of the collective misery of the masses. Just as this is a war on us through drugs, this plant’s legal status is a control on us as well. While some would say these laws are unjust, I disagree. These drug laws are enforced and obeyed by slaves. Slaves have, nor deserve, any rights. Breaking these marijuana laws is not just a sign of criminal behavior, it is indicative of a free person’s behavior. Only by over-growing the vote by such absurd amounts that the argument for prohibition becomes laughable for even the dimmest of slaves will this prohibition be overturned. But it must be done by a determined citizenry. A citizenry that frightens the powers that be when they grow, and defend, their crops.

13 Bhonze { 07.23.10 at 10:03 am }

WoW! the DEA is protecting us from ourselves! Your sitting in your own home smoking a joint and the DEA kills you to protect you from weed. They are too chicken shit to protect our boarders but have no problem killing inocent people. Our solders can’t even invaid homes in forien countries and shoot people in this manner or they will be courtmarshalled. What the f*#@!!!

14 Joel { 07.23.10 at 10:46 am }

I was being a little bit sarcastic when I said “all under control”. There will be one official statement from the sheriff; no more additional comments and absolutely no comments from the deputies who are involved. No leaks, no rumors, and no surprises on YouTube. All under control and they all acted appropriately.
If it happens outside the United States, it is called “death squad”.

Wow, America decays, our soldiers die on far away soil,our government is in chaos,yet the Marijuiana war still rages. It is probably the longest-running, costliest, most useless war in Americas history. It is is being waged upon patriot Americans. Keep the faith you all. We are making strides. Get Vocal, stand proud and fight like an American !!!!!!!!

I get vocal and the mods want to “review my posts”.

19 perspective { 07.25.10 at 10:48 pm }

I completely agree Jim and know that the intent of the word controlled is to give asphyxiation to the masses that our government must fight a substance to control it and that we as a citizenry follow with direct obedience, at least for the most part. That was my intent by saying this word caused brain washing. I laugh at this and think it the crudest form of censorship.

typical…. They (pigs/cops) get off on this kinda stuff. Its great to them. Bunch of misguided assholes.

“Oh wait, these zealots just might do something like that.”

Yep they have, look at “Plan Columbia” where they spray the rain forest to eradicate coca. even to this day! This has VASTLY ruined the locals lives in sooo many ways and destroys ALL plants that are sprayed. They, even to this day say it is harmless (the spray to humans) and that the plan is working well. Well turns out ,the people and mostly the children have been severely impacted. And guess what? there has been an INCREASE in cocaine use in the states. And, WE are paying ($$) for it!!!!
So it’s the same here, all this eradication and $$ spent and marijuana use is actually on the RISE!!! And once again WE pay for it!!

“If i kill someone its called murder and i go to prison and my life is finished. When the DEA kills someone it’s in the name of the war on drugs to protect us. some how the DEA doesn’t make me feel safer.”

-could not have said it better myself.

The DEA needs to be held ACCOUNTABLE for ALL the INNOCENT LIVES IT TAKES JUST LIKE OUR SOLDIERS IN WAR ARE NOW unfortunately!!!!!!!! (although that is a different story and I don’t agree with it either….it’s war…)

Even if its legalized they will still do this because they will still want to control it and the money! Vanguard on current T.V has documentaries on the Plan Columbia thing as well as C.A.M.P (campaign against marijuana planting in California)
Here is some info from the C.A.M.P guys.

http://www.ag.ca.gov/bne/camp.php

They bring in multiple 2,ooo plant gardens DAILY!! Once again WE pay for it! Right out of your pay check…..America is SO AWESOME………..:(

I will pray for these people that they will one day wake up and realize they are wasting precious time on a plant God created, that could be used hunting down terrorists or Bombs….or violent crimes.

OVER GROW!

22 Mark { 07.26.10 at 4:17 pm }

With more than 110 agencies having participated, CAMP (campaign aginst marijuana planting) is the largest law enforcement task force in the United States!!!!!

23 Conservative Christian { 07.27.10 at 6:06 am }

In America, we can change our entire government every few years at the ballot box. I think we will have a better outcome by turning off the rhetoric about violence and continuing our focus on winning the hearts and minds of the voters. The prohibitionists would love to be able to point to a website like this and say that the people on it are dangerous and violent; let’s not give them the opportunity. California is on the verge of a significant, positive change. Let’s keep the focus on that: Positive Change.

California citizens can register to vote at
h t t p s : / / w w w .sos.ca.gov/nvrc/fedform/ Just fill out the form and mail it in!

Other states: Just google your state name and “voter registration” then get registered, vote, and make a difference!

24 Jim Lunsford { 07.27.10 at 4:26 pm }

To Conservative, you keep on believing in the ballot box. That place where you can vote for your choice of the two candidates the corporations have selected for you. It’s such an obvious con game our leaders are pulling on all of us. How about we all be bad citizens instead? Name me one single great change that was caused by people fighting WITHIN the system? No. All great changes came from people who refused to bow down to the system. Bad citizens are simply people who refuse to bow down to what they perceive s tyranny. They broke the law, made it a joke, and created change by demanding it. They demanded this change because there was a social uprising in which people just said to hell with what the law says, this is what we will do. You go ahead and pretend that voting matters. It hasn’t worked yet, but you go ahead. I’ll continue to be a bad citizen, and a free individual.

25 perspective { 07.27.10 at 10:03 pm }

To Jim

I would like to back up your statement and conservative’s statement.

When the Civil Rights movement was happening you had an emergence of people who broke the law intentionally because they felt the law was wrong and disrespect full to the individuals that had to deal with the oppression that they faced. Dr. Martin Luther King was a forefront leader in this movement and was very close to the president, even though he led a group of criminals, so that he could push for their rights to act as the individuals they are and not who they are perceived to be. That is what we as a collective need. We need a leader, someone who will stand up and allow us to follow a message so true that it will make everyone think, and this is not just with marijuana though my intentions in this comment are for marijuana.

We need both to win this war. Everyone go out to the polls and vote against the dominant parties and grant way to a new regime by raising a 3rd party to a dominant one, and break these oppressive laws because I refuse to follow a law that tells me what to do with my body, soul, and mind especially with out scientific data or true reasoning against it.
