More Good News on THC and Cancer
For some time we’ve been pointing out the massive pile of evidence that THC and other cannabinoids have potential as anticancer drugs. A new study out of Thailand demonstrates that THC can fight cholangiocarcinoma – cancer of the bile duct. This is a rare but deadly form of cancer, with only 30 percent of patients still alive after five years, according to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. Based on these new lab results, the Thai researchers conclude, “THC is potentially used to retard cholangiocarcinoma cell growth and metastasis.”

I remember from my early childhood, that when someone got cancer, it was often either refered to as ” the big C’ or “the C word”, because, I assume it wasn’t as common as it is today. Do you know of any corelation with the illegalization of cannabis and the increase in cancers over the decades? I’d bet there is. I keep in mind that with advent of “Better living through chemistry” and the many odd, crazy and just plain scary chemicals it has introduced into our lives (and our bodies…like good ole petroleum based plastics)…that the cancer rate ver possibly has increased as a direct result…but what if cannabis had been widely available in the interum, would the cancer rate be as alarmingly high as it is today?
The prohibitionist will refuse to believe that.

I wonder how long the prohibitionists will continue to use “marijuana causes cancer” as one of their talking points, in the face of repeated studies from around the world that THC is actually a cancer-fighting agent?
What am I thinking? They never let FACTS get in the way before…
Steve #4, just to highlight what you said:
What are its long-term effects?
Marijuana smoke contains some of the same cancer-causing compounds as tobacco, sometimes in higher concentrations.Studies show that someone who smokes five joints per week may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day.
Like that?
Its from Partnership for a drug free america:
http://www.drugfree.org/Portal/drug_guide/Marijuana
Note the careful wording of the statement from the Partnership For a Truth-Free America: They do NOT say that marijuana causes cancer or increases users’ risk of cancer. Instead they string together statements with some element of truth (albeit highly debatable and ripped out of context) to imply marijuana causes cancer without directly stating it, which would be a flat lie.
And how many millions have died needlessly of cancer due to our government lying about the benefits of cannabis. My father would be one of them. How about all of you? Any reletives died from cancer,or more over, due to governemnt lies?
As I ve state recently. If I ever get cancer, I WILL try hemp oil. No law or goon with a gun or badge will stop me, short of permenant jail or a bullet in the head. How many of the prohibis would die if hemp oil kills cancer. Would they turn it down because its made from cannabis?
This makes me sick everytime I think, cannabis could have saved so many. My father could still be here.
Turn on the T.V. and all you see is lies from them on many issues.
Time to stop their bullshit.
Corruption: A desease that spares no one.
You can fool some people, some of the time…
You couldn’t have put it any better Bruce #6
grvtykllr #5 just look at who your source is, The Partnership for a drug free America. That says it all! Of course they will stretch the truth to MAKE it fit their needs, after all what they really want is a drug free America. They will do what they have to to cover up the real truth, which is simply that cannabis DOES NOT cause cancer!
This is why it has never killed anyone ever. If it did cause cancer that would mean it had killed at least one person, which it hasn’t.
I will say that smoking cannabis may not always be the best way to deliver its medicinal properties, but even when smoked its benefits greatly outweigh its negatives. You can try to prove me wrong if you want, but I have history on my side along with new studies popping up all the time that prove this point over and over again.
“DRUG FREE AMERICA” Unless it’s, “Good” drugs, the ones approved by the government.
Anyone, who thinks they can make any country drug free, is obviously quite detached from reality. In my amateur opinion, they’re delusional or lying if they think it’s possible.
They cannot keep drugs out of PRISONS! How will you rid a nation of a plant that can be grown from seed by anyone able to water a plant….
If you take to heart the foolish notions of the delusional, you too are delusional.
#10, that’s pretty funny, even though you didn’t mean it do be. I really never thought about it that way. If they can’t even keep cannabis out of the prison system, the DEA must really suck at their jobs. Oh wait, they do suck at their jobs, nevermind.

In response to your post, I also have lost a family member to the terrible effects of cancer. Fortunately my uncle did not have kids, so he didn’t have to worry about CPS, and a very loving wife. My aunt made it her priority to make sure he was comfortable in his last few months of life. She personally went out and illegally bought marijuana to make his life bearable. It truly is shameful that the DEA and FDA are still attempting to suppress the truth coming from around the world.
Bruce,
You rock harder than Zeppelin in ’73!
This is a amalgam of posts I made earlier at another post here. I think it is very pertinent in regards to this subject.
“After perusing the humorous “facts” purported by the DEA’s website on cannabis, I decided to make a concerted effort and write the American Cancer Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics. I figured if the AMA can change their minds and look to reviewing cannabis, maybe we can get others to do the same! It doesn’t hurt to try. Besides if more organizations like AMA start changing their minds, then what the heck is the DEA going to do? So, I suggest taking a moment and writing those organizations asking them to have their quotes removed from the DEA’s website and update them.
May be I’m being a fool, but at least I won’t feel like a tool.
For al those who are interested, I contacted the American Cancer Society at:
I chose “American Cancer Society” as the subject since the issue at hand is their public relation to marijuana.
At the American Academy of Pediatrics I went to:
Although this is the customer service area, it is a start in the right direction. For more people t contact at AAP, go to:
Let me know if there are any other questions. I also plan on contacting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) and The Institute of Medicine (IOM) soon.
I surmise that since the DEA’s reputation and stance on cannabis is due to supportive dialogue from these organizations, it will be easier to change policy and legislature if the DEA can no longer rely on the support of these institutions. Basically, cuttin’ them off at the feet!
If anyone else has more ideas please let me know. This is the most exciting time for cannabis policy change. Hence, I am going at this head on trying to help with change.”
Sorry for it’s length.
Mark from IN #12;
We did what we could to make my dad comfortable too, it makes me sick to think I found out about the possibilities of cannabis after he died. That is why I am here, to fight for people who are sick now and in the future.
To hell with our governemnt!
It’s appalling that we would continue to prohibit cannabis with the mounting evidence that it might be good for you. In contrast to alcohol that is the third leading cause of death in america. That’s right the third! thats alot of deaths be a legal recreational substance.
These facts are per Dr. G medical examiner. she rated tobacco as the number one cause of death. these facts may be misrepresentations.
Bruce, ROE, and anyone else that can help. I ask you guys today for help in my quest of finding information about Marijuana and ANY effects it has directly to cancer. My wife’s mom, a darling angel that has helped many people in need, has just found a large tumor in her colon that is very suspiscious of cancer. Her husband is sooooo against MJ but I am going to change his mind on the issue because I know MJ will help this woman. If it wont cure the cancer I at least know that it will help the Quality of life. All I am asking is for links for sites I can go to and find HARD evidence proving MJ will help this woman. I dont know where else to turn except to my family, and my family is you guys. I hope you can help, just a little bit if at all. I thank you in advance and I am sure both my mother in law and my wife are thankful as well.
JJ, Have her watch RUN FROM THE CURE. I have changed a the minds of a few people with that. Also look up apricot kernels or seeds. From what I’ve seen, the B17 vitamin in them are promising . DCA is another substance that people have been talking about. I have looked at all my multivitamins, non have B17 in them. I have an aunt that has been fighting cancer, she has given up on surguries and chmo and such. I sent these topics to family. Have to hope. Run from the cure shows how to make hemp oil. Apricots you crack open the seeds and eat 3-6 kernels a day. They are bitter from what I gather.
God said he gave us all seeds and plants bearing fruit. Truth? Healing? Cant hurt to try if your dying.
I’ll try find some links. I think Bruce may have more info on that than I. All the studies are on the internet.
http://www.acponline.org/journals/annals/15sep97/nsaid.htm
Heres a link that may help. Type THC in their search engine. It will bring up related articals. I’ll look see if I can find some other links I have stored.
http://phoenixtears.ca/melamede_webcast.php
Let’s talk more about the prohibition of science. Science has been outlawed before the plant itself was.
I think my cancer is kicking up,got the bettersmokeajointaloma symptoms. got to go take a bowl treatment.
I hear this crap that cannabis has cancer causing agents in the smoke. amazing that no one has ever died from cancer if that was the truth. The whole world spouts bullshit. one thing I have learned in 65 years is dont believe anyone and make your own decisions based on your own homework!
Bruce:
I realize EXACTLY what they say, its not t hat they say it, its that it implies that direct connection, and in the public’s eyes, thats proof. People have been lied to for so long, those lies repeated and spread and drilled in to childrens heads for so many generations, that its gospel now. Whats the old saying about if you repeat a lie long enough eventually it becomes truth?
They do not have to lie, they just have to imply, the past 70 years of ground work do the rest of it for them. Its one fo the biggest reasons that its so damned hard to change peoples minds by simply offering the truth to them.
YesWeCannabis :
I realize that the source is crap. My intent with the statement and source was just to put in to bold letters, what Steve had said in post #4.
They lied, they will continue to lie. IF it was found that marijuana could cure swine flu, AIDS, and cancer (I am not even making a claim to that, just a profound example is all), the fear tactics that they have used and the propaganda that has been pounded in to the peoples heads would be enough of a lasting effect that a great amount of people would still cry for it to be kept illegal.
Yesterday I was watching live coverage of the the blow up over trying the terrorists in civil court rather than a tribunal. One woman who grabbed him (Eric Holder,
Attorney General of the United States), was not even there to cry about that situation! She immediately launched in to her goal was to tell him marijuana is not medicine and he is she has 30 years of studies to prove it and he is wrong and needs to turn federal attention back to prosecuting medical patients.
30 years of fake, bullshit studies, some that had no scientific foundation at all, you can not reach these people by now giving truth, they have their truth, you will not convince them otherwise.
Keep in mind, I am on your side! I want it legal, in the very least for medical purposes, but ultimately for any and all purposes.
My dad who is 74 now is a medical MJ patient in Washington state. I am the one that turned him on to MMJ. Hes been smoking it for about 4 months now, maybe 6. He has been on major pain killers for over 40 years for back injuries and surgeries and sickness and nausea from an ulcer that nearly killed him and they cut the vega nerve, destroying any chance he ever had a full recovery. Suddenly his pain pills have been cut in half, he sleeps 5 or 6 hours a night, he is not sick 24/7, and at this point is no longer thinking about suicide to end 40 years of misery. I am a firm believer in MMJ, and a long time believer in recreational use of MJ as well, take in to account all of the benefits financially, and the lost lives and destroyed people the drug war renders each year, and it makes no sense to continue the way it is.
It took me years to convince him to try it, he now regrets the lectures he gave me in the 80s about it, and wishes he had listened then, and to my older brothers before me in the 70′s and gotten his mother to try it when she was fighting cancer and chemo before her death in 81.
All my ideas may not be right on how to proceed with the fight to legalize, but I am willing to listen to anyone who offers any hope of putting an end to this, willing to stand next to any of you, and cry my position to all to hear, and stand in the face of the consequences of my actions and not turn and run because shit hit the fan.
You have ideas? I want to hear them, you got a plan? clue me in, I am here, I will help in any way I can.
I’m 38 and pissed off, and on your side.
JJ:
You want a study? some links?
One of my favorite sites for getting that is NORML.
In fact second to MPP, I think norml is one of the greatest organizations working to advance this cause.
Lots of info on that site, but start with this specific page:
http://www.norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=7002
Please inform everyone that the mayo Clinic and Washington University in St. Louis, MO USA have a cure for cholangiocarcinoma that involves a novel use of neoadjuvant chemo-radiation followed by liver transplant. In the past, liver transplant did not work for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma but Dr. Dteven Rosen at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and Dr. William C. Chapman at washington University in St. Louis (Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Siteman Cancer Center) found that by doing an innovative pre-transplant sanitizing course of external beam radiation and advanced chemotherapy, they prediuct an 85% cure rate. I have seen the patients who have been cured and I note that the medical community and even the cholangiocarcinoma cancer sites are not informing patients of this resource. See my article on the subject – Parasite protein linked to cancer – http://honolulu.injuryboard.com/medical-malpractice/parasite-protein-linked-to-cancer-.aspx?googleid=272406 – and also go to http://www.cholangiocarcinoma.org for more information. All a patient has to do is to call Dr. Chapman at Washington University in St. Louis and he will ask to see the most recent scans of the tumor. Its easy.
Alos check out Dr. Andrew Kennedy at Wake Radiology in Cary, North Carolina. His radioembolization procedure with yttrium-90 microspheres has successfully destroyed Klatskin tumors without surgery. Do not believe it when an oncologist tells you that the tumor is “inoperable”. Insist that your scans are sent to Dr. Kennedy for a second opinion.
Thanks for your post on THC. Much is being missed in cancer treatment because of old attitudes and lack of knowledge among oncologists, particularly in the US.
My wife died of cholangiocarcinoma and so I have been on the trail of this disease. Contact Chapman and Kennedy and Rosen.
Thanks a lot for posting the study. I happen to know someone with this form of cancer and I forwarded the link to them.

I love Lester Grinspoon, but he sure did himself no favors when he discounted cannabis’ cancer-curing properties.
Funny, docs are just so arrogant that they just can’t believe it’s true, or they don’t want to face the public when they SHOULD have known.
As much as I love Mr. Grinspoon, he totally screwed up.
I feel a need to add a small note of caution here. MPP encourages the exchange of information (so long as it’s noncommercial), but we are not qualified to give medical advice, and no one should make medical decisions based on what they read on a blog. Unfortunately, most of the data regarding cannabinoids and cancer comes from lab and animal studies, not clinical trials in human cancer patients. Any claims regarding cures should be approached with a healthy level of skepticism — whatever the particular cure being touted might be.
JJ: Maybe you should copy, paste, and print articles you read here at MPP. That’s what I’ve done and now have a large folder and it’s time for a second folder. Couldn’t find anything for you on tumor or colon in the folder though sorry. Kinda sick lately.
Here’s MPP’s link on research: http://www.mpp.org/library/
Thank you to all..I will continue this quest with aide from many many print outs that I have found. Bruce, thank you for the email and ROE and Lea, thanks goes to you too. I will be up night and day until I can convince my father in law that his wife will have a better quality of life if MJ is used. Even if the cancer is not cureable or able to be put in recession, I think that quality of her life is much more important that ANY other excuse he can come up with. I guess after all is said and done, it will come down to whether he loves his wife or not. Thanks again to all. JJ
Good luck to ya JJ,
I will keep you in mind if I should find any info. I got a couple of our compadras out there looking too. As bruce said though, keep and ounce of sckeptisism.
#25 hell yea i will have to say the norml website and organization is my first choice for news but mpp is on the same page i just usually will go from one site to the other i am hungry for more steps toward legalization and it seems every week brings new info
Hey if you guys want to try and help out the cause some more head over to Facebook and become a fan of Chase Community Giving. They are giving out money to charities. Vote for the Marijuana Policy Project and any other groups for marijuana reform posted on there. (Leap and Students for Sensible Drug Policy are on there as well)
Don’t be funny.Prohibition of marijuana did not increase cancer this is ridiculous. There has been so many changes (mutant food, radiation, chemtrails) all of them entered our lives very fast.Don’t forget that these generations are showing the result of the chernobyl accident. These generations are showing the side effects of global vaccination.Since when marijuana is essential for the survival of human race?
Elisa G., comment No. 1, makes an excellent point, one which cannabis activist “leaders” have pointedly chosen to ignore for the past 10 years. Until about 1948, the main use of hemp seed in the US was in feed for dairy and beef cattle. One can assume that cancer-preventive cannabinoids were present in the milk and meat from these hemp-fed cattle. The stratospheric rise of cancer and a host of other illnesses since 1948 may indeed be connected to the forced removal of cannabinoids from the human food chain. This stands to reason, and yet our pro-legalization “leaders” continue to shy away from the very obvious possibility, or probability, that Cannabis Prohibition Causes Cancer. It remains a mystery why not a single pro-pot “leader” or organization will even address the possibility that prohibition is causing cancer and many other physical and mental illnesses. Paul Armentano and Bruce Mirken certainly have never brought it up publicly, even though I have written to Mr. Armentano about it a number of times. Hemp prohibition is causing cancer. What do you say to that, Mr. Mirken? The evidence is already in: “Potential application of cannabinoids as anti-tumor drugs is an exciting prospect. . . Treating with a cannabinoid . . . could provide a new approach to colorectal cancer treatment or prevention.”
–Raymond DuBois, M.D., Ph.D., provost and executive vice president of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. 08/01/08.
Dr. DuBois, one of the nation’s leading cancer doctors, says that cannabinoids might “prevent” cancer. Isn’t that good enough for you, Messrs. Mirken and Armentano? If cannabinoids “prevent” cancer, as Dr. Dubois suggests, then cannabis prohibition “causes” cancer. Get it, guys? Now go tell the world, unless you have some agenda other than legalization.
Thanks Mr. Bruce Mirken for posting this topic. My background is in law enforcement (30 years) federal criminal investigator, supervisor manager, high management official. I am retired now. On 1-22-2010, Mom wo was 73 died under the most terrible painful experiences, she started dying after 1 pm and did not die until after 5 pm. She kept gasping for air. She was under Yuma Hospice care but no one responded. She had Cholangiocarcinoma. The death certificate state Metastatic Adenocarcinoma. I did not know nothing about this type of cancer until I got all medical records. Hospice and a local Yua, AZ Oncologist Dr. John Peter Sullivan refuse to release them even when the federal and state law states I have the legal right to have them. After Mom had a big operation in San Diego, CA at UCSD the removed a big portion of the cancerous tumor and burned the rest. Once she came home, I gave the Eight herbs that make the Essiac Tea but in capsules. She was great for six months then someone told her to stop tkaing the supplements. She obeyed and the cancer cameback. Her Oncologist MD, PhD prmised to start her on chemotherapy in August 2008. November 4, 2009 was the last time that Mom went to see him. He never put her on any type of anti-cancer treatment. I asked him why he refused to treat my Mom’s cancer. He did not answer. Hopefully, we will find some justice in court soon.
