Seattle’s New City Attorney Will Dismiss All Marijuana Possession Cases

Pete Holmes, the newly elected Seattle city attorney, is already making good on his campaign promise to dismiss any marijuana possession charges that come through his office, the Seattle Times reported last week. Holmes dismissed two marijuana-related cases on his first day on the job, and several others are about to be dismissed, including cases taken up by the previous city attorney.

According to the Times, Holmes’ predecessor, Tom Carr, had continued to prosecute low-level marijuana arrests even after city voters passed a referendum in 2003 making marijuana the lowest law-enforcement priority for local officials.

This is just the latest in a whole string of good news coming out of Washington state in recent weeks.

Freedom sweet freedom at last just around the bend!

this is indeed great news! On a separate note…

Will MPP be addressing the alleged poor conduct by Rob Kampia and subsequent internal issues at any time. Or do you plan to try sweeping it under the rug and hope noone notices?

States are definitely doing the right thing, although not everyone agrees with all the changes yet. It’s important for people who live in these states that are making progress to hold the elected officials feet to the fire and not allow any back peddling.

The last sentence in the article says it all though,
“The drug would remain illegal under federal law”.

I posted a comment on this on saturday. This is just the first step. We have to get everyone who is in jail on simple posession and growing , OUT! That is the only human thing to do. We cannot keep people locked up for something that is now becoming legal. Now there is a democrat in Hawaii that wants to just fine everyone for cannabis, just like a traffic ticket!! Same old shit from the same old people!!! Politics are going to change to cannabis support. Who is going to be the first HONEST elected official? MPP, you should be on this like flies on crap.

This is the beginning of the end for the US federal government and its war against liberty. When the people decide to ignore ignorant federal laws the people will always benefit.. Way to go Mr. Holmes, you may have renewed my faith in common sense in government.

Is MPP gonna celebrate by throwing a party with everyone’s donations?

7 Rhayader { 01.18.10 at 1:28 pm }

Wow, Seattle is looking better and better every day. I doubt any other city in the country has such a cannabis-friendly combination of mayor, DA, and state legislature. Great to hear.

Don’t forget the citizens, Rhayader. There’s a link on here that talks about the majority of citizens wanting to end marijuana Prohibition. It’s a sure sign that we might be seeing Washington State move ahead of California in the era of abandoning the old Prohibition and moving into a system of regulation and education.

MPP:

NEED SOME HELP HERE IN VIRGINIA:

http://www.wvec.com/news/local/Bill-would-decriminalize-marijuana-in-Virginia-81983712.html

Apparently two bills are being offered; one for medical use and another to decriminalize. Please get us some detailed information about these bills and contact the author to help with the wording of the legislation. Please do not limit growing rights… please do not limit medical conditions…. please get us some information so that we can make the 2010 Legislative session worthwhile.

10 Rhayader { 01.18.10 at 2:46 pm }

Don’t forget the citizens, Rhayader.

Oh of course not, you’re absolutely right. Government always lags behind public opinion. Without the millions of citizens who are willing to see past the propaganda and decades of prohibitionist inertia, we’d never see any sort of progress with marijuana policy.

With that in mind, bug your representatives people!

11 rushing_water { 01.18.10 at 3:11 pm }

please do not limit medical conditions said DarthNole.

Agreed 2000% percent however, it’s what is going on. They turned down a person in Colorado with Parkinson’s because of “lack of scientific proof”.

And I hear you Clarence.
There’s an organization called Restorative Justice Ministry that works with released prisoners, not sure if it entails what you’re talking about and I think it’s based in Texas, or for Texas. You can hear the interview here: http://www.drugtruth.net/cms/
The January 10th interview.

This is awesome news. Thanks Mr Holmes for being true to your word, now dont cave in to any pressure that maybe put on you. When the states and people start ignoring federal law, federal law will become a moot law. The people have the power,the states can implement that power to change behavior at the federal level. Our fedral government is NOT omnipotent, we have the power people. This just proves it. If this kind of attitude can continue, federal corruption WILL be changed on many issues. STOP THE LIES! END THE MADNESS!

13 good job { 01.18.10 at 6:21 pm }

Good job, Mr. Holmes. Having the intestinal fortitude to do the right thing (the will of the voters) is something that every politician could learn from (all the way to the top hypocrite.) This is one of the few items of sanity I have seen in the media of late.

14 Angus McSpuds { 01.19.10 at 4:13 am }

ask ALL candidates for ANY elected office…

Are you for or against prohibition?

If the electorate voted to legalize marijuana and Hemp, what would you do?

If you become President, how long will it for you to take marijuana off of schedule 1?

if you become our representative, and the federal government took marijuana off of schedule one, would you help or hinder efforts to legalize marijuana in your state?
…and if the fed does not reschedule marijuana in time for your state’s iniatives, would you help or hinder efforts to legalize marijuana in your state???

15 Clarence { 01.19.10 at 6:29 am }

The government knows the truth. They do not want people to know that cannabis is virtually harmless.They do not want any independent studies done anywhere, by anyone. MONEY!!! As soon as the cannabis plant and hemp plant become legal they will loose billions of KICK BACK dollers!! PROOF! The drug companies pay lobbiests, lobbiests pay polititions. There is no reason for a drug company to get a 12 year monoply on a single drug. That is a legal drug with many side effects that will also kill you. They refuse any and all applications because they already know everything there is to know about cannabis. It is not addicting. You can not overdose. There is no bad side effects. Most importantly, cannabis can be used for so many different ailment that the drug companies will loose so many billions of dollers. It always has been about money. Free the weed and you free the people.

Wendy, its not just around the bend. For you and I its even further down the road than for most of the country. This is not time to celebrate, this is the time to push harder and faster and with more force than ever before.
I think I will live to see it legalized, and I’m nearly 40. But its still years out from being accepted, and in Utah, its further still.
There is not time to celebrate, raise a joint in toast to this great news tonight, and wake up ready to fight harder to make this an American celebration, instead of just a Seattle celebration.
Once we have our own country fixed on this issued, we can start pressuring the rest of the world to stop the bullshit.

grvtykllr – sorry, I still beg to differ opinons, but what about when the $15M crops come into Utah Canyons this year (2010).

And what about it already being written within their own Book Of Mormon quoting Brigham Young.

The L.D.S.Church may be embarrassed from this new enlightenment and certainly only wants the best for humanity, come what may with our dumb Uncle Sam working out the kinks over the next several years.

It is Democracy at its finest hour in human evolution.

God Bless America! David – if You happen to get arrested for posessing a joint, sing them all this little song I sang my last three unnecessary jail days on the cement (for no reason)…(2004)
