1 Just Legalize It { 09.18.09 at 4:23 pm }

i remember reading about this….. its disgusting how law enforcement thinks they are above the law….. btw bruce, you need to fix the link above…. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/17/AR2009091701680.html

2 Ziggy { 09.18.09 at 4:23 pm }

Dead link… but good story!

3 Alex { 09.18.09 at 4:33 pm }

thanks for posting the fixed link JLI. And the story is disgusting. No-knock warrants breach the 4th amendment, and paramillitary swat teams are just the proof I need to say We live in a police state. We have to make the choice liberty or security, we can´t have both. I would rather live insecure then surrender liberty. After all I have more of a chance getting in a car aciddent caused by a drunk driver and dying then the many so called ¨bad guys¨ the police state is trying to protect me from.

So, so sad. This is the country we now live in. Welcome to your worst nightmare. The real terrorists are already on our soil. They’re right where you live. They’re your neighborhood police force.

5 bennyhanna { 09.18.09 at 5:16 pm }

How sad…even a mayor can’t get the system to work correctly and justly. We have no hope. This is disgusting Alex, you said it best. It makes me sick to my stomach. How corrupt our government is. What a shame.

6 Clarence { 09.18.09 at 5:23 pm }

I hope now we have another person for the legalizatoin of cannabis.

7 Just Legalize It { 09.18.09 at 5:36 pm }

educate, educate, educate! remember, although marijuana isnt addictive, learning about it quickly becomes. Now is the time! More people than ever dont trust the government and thinks they lie. Let’s use that to our advantage. Remember, the tax money is not the reason it should be legalized…. its merely a small bonus

If these facists are harming people and their families then they and their families are fair game.

9 R.O.E. { 09.18.09 at 7:18 pm }

Its just discusting,If Im sitting on my couch in my home smoking a joint,harming no one, my home can be ‘lawfully’ broken into,my dogs shot,my guns taken,my property damaged/destroyed,my life ruined…for what? A freaking plant,a non addictive plant that can kill cancer among other things. IM TIRED OF PAYING THESE TYPE OF PEOPLE TO RUIN THE LIVES OF DECENT PEOPLE.

How Leo’s being forced to make sure they have a big time dealer? No breaking down doors for an 1/8 bag, no walking on civil rights. If leo’s keep walking on civilrights, eventually they will lose all resect of a majority of the people. At that point leo’s will wish we were civil.

I guarrentee one thing, Your chances of getting shot is very high if your break down my door….no matter the reason. If you made a mistake , its not my fault. Be carefull of what you do.

Way to go Mayor Calvo!

We’re infested with corruption from the highest levels to the lowest. Yank them up by the roots, prune off all the dead branches, and cut down the Evil Drug War Tree.

In other news… “The Children” a new series with the first one, “Legalizing Drugs Sends the Right Message to Teens.”

(Please excuse the speed of the site, it’s often under attack from the prohibitionists; and it runs on the most bare bones of hosting accounts.)

11 Divided Police States of America { 09.18.09 at 8:23 pm }

Here we stand… what is to the conclusion of the prison-industrial complex.

A police force that rules beyond law and God given rights. A police force that threatens the laws that gave Americans the right from where America was founded on.

Go to work (if you have a job), pay your taxes, and die. Where did that American dream go?

12 Joel { 09.18.09 at 10:17 pm }

This is what happens when organized crime and crooked politicians takes control of the government; everybody else are considered pawns.

13 ElisaG { 09.19.09 at 1:02 am }

Remember when you told your kids that if they were ever lost or scared…find a police officer…they’ll help you…?

14 Zeitgeist { 09.19.09 at 2:17 am }

Capitalism and all of America is a joke. Its all corrupt, and your money is made from thin air. Watch Zeitgeist and you will see. “Its not a war on drugs its a war on personal freedom keep that in mind at all times”. (bill hicks) Were all slaves to the system because if you don’t have a job you cant survive happily. You can’t even die for free.

15 Daryl { 09.19.09 at 6:16 am }

I hope this opens many peoples eyes that this war on drugs causes corruption to occur more often. And is the extreme aggression tactics of the police justified when the individual is just a non-violent marijuana user.

Keep trying to mix what works with what does not, and call it progress. We will be fighting this battle for another 60 years.

17 djm { 09.19.09 at 8:08 am }

Is this how the system works? We still have prohibition because we haven’t purchased our rights yet? We are, in effect, paying a tax, or gratuity, or as they call it in Mexico, “la Mordida”, to maybe someday have the legal right to pursue happiness. How about we don’t pay a damn thing and demand what so obviously needs to be done? How about a team of lawyers with big, giant, brass balls filing a lawsuit in which the whole thing can be laid out for all to see.

Nothing like a good cup of “STATE SPONSORED TERRORISM!!”

What if unsuspecting packages were sent to the offices of all AG’s & DA’s so they can get a taste of their own medicine!!!

WELCOME TO THE UNTIED POLICE-STATES of AMERIKKKA!!!!

19 Lea { 09.19.09 at 6:24 pm }

The entire story makes me mad and even madder that the idiot cops killed the dogs.

Glen #16: When I donate to MPP they send a separate envelope and donation paper stating that they can now ask me for for PAC donations. They’re not hiding anything. So please don’t cloud the issue.
I’m not in D.C., I don’t know for the larger part of the picture how the PAC stuff works however, if MPP wants to ask for more money for PAC and I send it to them for PAC then they can well do with it what they want.

24 Hairy Pot Tern { 09.20.09 at 2:16 pm }

There is a strong fraternal bond between not only law enforcement personnel from one department within itself, but this fraternal order is a bond between all officers of all agencies. I know this because my father is an officer, and I’ve gotten to know many officers throughout my life. Cops will stick together no matter what, and at the expense of the general public they are paid to serve and protect. Even more so in these times where drug money flows free to politicians, officials and law envorcement. Those who choose not to believe this are naive.

Make a mistake, plant a bag of drugs. Probable cause is not needed when you can break a tail light with your baton. Self protection is not murder when an officer can plant an unregistered weapon in the hands of a dead and innocent victim. This kind of thing goes on every day.

When I was younger I was severly beaten by my father on a somewhat regular basis. One time I was unable to participate in physical educaiton classes and went to the nurse for an excused absence for the day. When she saw I was beaten and bruised she called the police department. When they heard whose officer I was the son of, they just laughed at the nurse and said I deserved it.

One day I had a few drinks with a friend after school and went home drunk. My father beat me severely with his fists and his night stick because he thought I’d been smoking marijuana. When I told him I’d been drinking he simply said, “Oh,” and then stopped beating me. Never an apology.

When I was sixteen I was severely beaten for a missing item belonging to my father. My lips and eyebrows were split, and my nose was bleeding too. He knocked me to the ground and when I was lying flat on my back he put his boot in the middle of my chest, drew his service weapon, cocked it and pointed it directly at my head and told me if he EVER found out I’d taken the item, he would find me and KILL me.

I don’t like law envorcement of any kind, and I don’t trust them. I know about their dirty secrets and their cronyism, and how they view others who are not cops, and not in political power. They use whatever means to achieve their purposes.

I hope all these cops get what they deserve. However I find it difficult to believe that in a country where prisons and our militaristic law enforcement are the #1 growth industry how things are ever going to change. Things are far too profitable the way they are, especially when they can arrest nearly 850,000 of us every year, take our assets and deny us in many cases our right to vote, or even just our rights for that matter, how this is going to change.

I pray that things will change. I hope that things will change. I donate to MPP and NORML and just hope things will change.

Hairy Pot Tern #24:

So sorry for the horrible treatment you had to endure as a victim to your father. So sad.

And then again, thank you for being brave enough to share your story and insights as to the true nature of law enforcement. I’ve known a few in my life time too and you pretty much nailed their attitude.
Not all of law enforcement could possibly be this corrupt, at least that’s my hope, however, the good cops are significantly outnumbered by the bad ones.

26 jay zee { 09.20.09 at 3:48 pm }

just glad it was not worse than it already was. they killed their dogs for crying out loud.

27 c { 09.20.09 at 3:51 pm }

i can corobortate #24 story. i have family in law enforcement. i have heard stories of people being set up for the greater good, and we can all see the violence spread by law enforcement. their power is undeniable. that being said they are not the smartest tools in the shed. i believe that we greater public education on the benifits of cannabis, and the increased risks associated with alcohol, tobacco in comparison with cannabis we can win the hearts and minds. #24 i am sorry for you troubles and hope that you break that chain of family violence. god bless

28 Just Legalize It { 09.20.09 at 6:20 pm }

i finally bought “marijuana is safer” yesterday at the freedom rally… started reading it this morning…. almost done already… its hard to put it down… had to for football tho…. great addition to a legalizer’s book collection…..

29 Maui420L { 09.20.09 at 6:25 pm }

In 1968 I was hitch hiking with a friend and the car we got a ride from was pulled over… the police surched the car and the occupants and found a tab of acid on the passenger that was in the car… we were taken to the police station in Bellaire Texas and strip searched… the officer took me and my friend aside and told us we were going to prison or we could go enlist in the military… we were taken to a recruiter station and the officer waited until we had “Volunteered” for the military…
as far as I can see nothing has changed in 40 years…

30 R.O.E. { 09.20.09 at 6:54 pm }

The only way I see outta all this as far as corrupt leo’s and government is to out everyone that is corrupt. Nail’em all to the wall and show everyone what will happen to you if your corrupt , a modern day witch hunt…..hummmm…sorta like they do to cannabis users.

Corruption: A disease that spares no one.

31 c { 09.20.09 at 11:07 pm }

29 i met a man the other day who was busted with acid 25 years ago and spent the better part of 2 decades in the prison system. to day he suffers from injuries acquired in prison when he was attacked. he has no skills to market and is unemployable. why, how is this even remotely fair? why did we do this to this man? it seems like we perpetrated the bigger crime by taking every chance he had at life. good news they just ended the moratorium in my town so the co ops are running and ive heard the comercial multiple times today woohoo.

32 R.O.E. { 09.21.09 at 8:12 am }

#31 C ;

Its wrong to take otherwise decent people and completely ruin their lives like that. Its like the law is saying” Ok . you wanna ruin your self with drug, here lets help you do that,only you wont enjoy any of it!” Maybe that guy with the LSD would have given it up and became something. Many people do , only the law doesnt care about the what ifs, just the what can we do to you now, who cares what you COULD be later.

Humm ..Isnt there some presidents that smoked cannabis and went on to be …..ya what ever.

33 admin { 09.21.09 at 9:27 am }

Fixed the link.

34 jon stotz { 09.21.09 at 2:08 pm }

there’s enough people to change these laws, and this business as usual. there are many people who would fight for it, but also just as many that have been scared into thinking that all drugs are intrinsically harmful and are of no benefit ever to anyone. this is just ludicrous, and there are enough non-critical-thinkers out there to lovingly lap it up in the name of ‘harm prevention’. you know what real harm prevention is? education about drugs, and whether or not any one person should take any particular drug.

use what you want, just don’t infringe on my liberties and there’s no problem. responsibility is the key. keep the peace, and that’s what there will be.

drugs are here to stay, and legalizing and regulating ALL drugs should have been policy from day one.

35 jerry preston { 09.21.09 at 6:43 pm }

the police say that they did everything they were supposed to do. So i guess they are trained to slaughter innocent family pets as well. i realize they need to protect themselves from dangerous animals during a raid, but do they really need to kill them? Any dog will bark and try to protect their owners, those poor dogs had no idea what was going on and they were doing what they were supposed to do, protect their owners. what’s worse about this is that they chased down the younger dog and shot him while he was running away. the officers in this raid should be stripped of their badges. they are a bunch of cowards that hide behind their guns and badges. and they wonder why nobody has any respect for them. i sure don’t.

36 Daniel Evans Goodell { 09.22.09 at 9:14 am }

Why hasn’t the media picked up on this? Bruce, this should, along with other positive articles, be mailed to every news outlet in the country! And yes, I am a monthly ($) supporter :)

37 |Cleveland| Stephen { 09.22.09 at 1:53 pm }

This article scared me half to death, does anyone find it rediculous that a MAYOR was ” No Knocked” illegally?

without a warrent…..

killed his two dogs…..

(wtf why? im 19, weigh 145 and i can controll my 110lb. boxer …a black lab couldnt have been much harder)

And no one heard about it?

i didnt hear about it in the news, or anywhere but mpp for that matter…. It just makes me scared off my ass knowing that im not going to stop partaking in Medical marijuana, and if that can happen to the mayor…what could happen to me?

38 Conservative Christian { 09.22.09 at 2:14 pm }

Bruce, this is an important story that has received relatively little national attention since the initial story. Could MPP get some air time on this through CNN, MSNBC, or maybe some novel news outlet such as the Colbert Report or the Daily Show? Even Glenn Beck or Bill O’Reilly might be interested in this as an example of government run amok and/or covering up it’s dirty laundry.

39 J. S. Ogle { 09.22.09 at 10:18 pm }

Your kids don’t belong to you. They belong to the government. This happened after being registered after they were born. That created a “Person,” which is a legal fiction and not a human being. There’s a lot of info on this topic as to what the truth about it is.

40 J. S. Ogle { 09.22.09 at 10:20 pm }

(Cont) Because this happened to all of us, therefore we all belong to the government. And they are exploiting it.

41 tokerace { 09.26.09 at 12:15 am }

I can tell all of you how we the people can correct these situations…read the second ammendment.

43 Richard Savary { 09.27.09 at 9:38 pm }

About the Calvos, I hope they get $Millions in damages from that fascist, backward county, which thinks that whatever it does is, by definition, legal and appropriate, regardless of the real law or the laws of decency. We don’t have to live in a society where the police are a worse threat than criminals. This story makes me mad – real mad.

They should sue for exact replacements for their labs – it can be done, albeit at great expense. The Calvos must sue for Payton and Chase to be cloned, so that they can have their dogs, which were so wrongly taken from them, returned. Unless the county is lucky, that could cost at least another few million dollars.

The county MUST be forced to pay for every loss the Colvos sustained, physical and emotional, so that there will be some justice for them, and so that county, and every other county or other police force will think again about their stupid, blithe policies. If anyone besides the police did what they did, it would be a very, very serious crime indeed. I say that it’s twice as bad when the police do it.

And as far as any statute of limitations is concerned, it cannot possibly be true that simply by stalling for a year to finish their internal investigation, the cops get completely off the hook? Certainly that statute of limitations must start when the police investigation is complete? Certainly, the clock must not start until it is possible to file a claim? If true, however, the county police must also be sued for deliberately (or if that can’t be proved, then negligently) denying the Colvos their full rights under the law. That should be good for at least another few million.

All in all it seems to me the Colvos are due at least $10 Mn for gross police arrogance, ignorance and reckless disregard for the law, plus extreme endangerment and emotional suffering, including the wanton, unnecessary killing of their beloved pets (Labs are the gentlest of all dogs). If the county doesn’t want to pay – tough – they earned every penny. Maybe they’ll think twice before pulling such a stupid, ugly, violent stunt on anyone else, ever again.
