Not Very Metal: Megadeth Frontman Endorses Rick Santorum

UPDATE: Dave Mustaine has clarified his position, saying that he likes Santorum but does not officially “endorse” him.

I was shocked to learn that Dave Mustaine, the singer of Megadeth, endorsed Rick Santorum for president.

If you’re not a fan of heavy metal, you might not know that Megadeth is one of the most popular metal bands of all time — and they’re certainly one of the most political bands in any music genre.  Dave Mustaine actually covered the presidential race for MTV News in 1996.

As one of two MPP staffers who regularly  listens to heavy metal, I can say with confidence that Dave Mustaine should have endorsed Ron Paul — if Mustaine wanted to be at all representative of his fans.

Disciples of heavy metal are disproportionately libertarians:  The anti-authority music lyrics go hand-in-hand with the anti-authoritarian policy positions of libertarians like Ron Paul.

Also, fans of heavy metal are more likely to be marijuana users than the average citizen.  (If you don’t believe me, go to an Ozzy Osbourne concert and breathe deeply.)  So when Mustaine endorses Rick Santorum, Mustaine is basically saying that it is just fine with him if literally millions of his fans continue to face arrest … for doing no harm to others.

On principal, Mustaine should have endorsed Ron Paul. And, even if only for selfish reasons, Mustaine should not have endorsed Rick Santorum, who seeks to incarcerate a large portion of the people who pay Mustaine’s salary.

  1. Whatta tool-…and Why do you think he did this?
Beats me…Ba-Bye megadeath…fun while it lasted.
Your opinion is your own-which is the scary part.
Musicians should play music-Arresting your fans?..
How out of touch can one be?

  2. A few more reasons Dave Mustaine has now outed himself as a total hypocritical douche:

    1) Peace Sells?: Santorum has no qualms about stating he supports Isreal and will continue military action in the Middle East.

    2) “Earlier in the election, I was completely oblivious as to who Rick Santorum was, but when the dude went home to be with his daughter when she was sick, that was very commendable,”

    3) “Also, just watching how he hasn’t gotten into doing these horrible, horrible attack ads like Mitt Romney’s done against Newt Gingrich, and then the volume at which Newt has gone back at Romney” — It doesn’t take much looking around to find attack ads Santorum has used throughout his career. Good job on closing your eyes to that as well, Duchestain!

And finally, I would imagine that because of Dave’s born-again leanings, the fact that Santorum sells himself as a religious zealot plays no small part in it either.

  3. I think you need to start doing some fact checking, take down your post and a retraction. As of Feb 16th, Megadeth Frontman, Dave Mustaine posted on Megadeth’s Website that he never said he backed Santorum. Dave Mustaine has issued the following statement to clarify reports that he has endorsed Rick Santorum for president: “Contrary to how some people have interpreted my words, I have not endorsed any presidential candidate. What I did say was that I hope to see a Republican in the White House. I’ve seen good qualities in all the candidates but by no means have made my choice yet. I respect the fact that Santorum took time off from his campaign to be with his sick daughter, but I never used the word ‘endorse.’”

  4. I think you should do some research before opening your mouth about who people ‘should support’- Dave mustaine should support Ron Paul if he’s for repealing the civil rights act and making abortion equatable to murder… Not to mention Paul’s support for medical marijuana in reality simply has to do with states rights not actually with him being in support of it… He just doesn’t think the federal government should be allowed to tell us what to do in an circumstance … Except for maybe not letting black people buy things where white people do.

  5. The fact you wrote this article without doing the proper research into what Dave Mustaine said shows that you are willing to use the same dirty tacktics that Fox News uses. I thought that you guys were better then this. By no means is Dave Mustaine a saint, but to accuse him for somthin he didn’t do is the same as what the cops or feds do to us. Instead of making Dave “Public Enemy No. 1″ write a real article about somthin to do with “Mary Jane”. \m/(><)\m/

  6. So, how much is he getting paid to indorse Saniarium? Somebody needs to wake this guy up. He’s problably been on some Lsd trip and not woke up yet

  7. Wait, do the math. What kind of listeners listen to heavy metal bands? Yep! you got it; Tokers do. The only one who is running who even talks about pot is Ron Paul and he wants to decrim and legalize it. I did see this guy endorse Santorum and I asked my brother, what kind of drugs is he on. He’s going to lose his fans! He’s endorsing someone who wants to put people in Guantanamo for smoking a joint. Don’t worry, when he awakes, his vote shall change.

  8. Good lord. I cruise over to check the MPP out and perhaps get in the good fight and this partisan bullshit is what I find? Who gives a fuck? Man, it’s really getting old with all this “He doesn’t vote like vote so we should be banned or boycotted” crap. Left/Right, Truther/Birther, you’re all the same. Reactionary, narcissistic, hyper-sensitive little bitches.

Christ, can’t even scroll thru the comments on a blog purporting to be about Legalization without having to dodge the anti-Israel nutjobs.

No wonder legalization is a pipe dream…instead of seeking common cause with disparate people you’ve managed to help turn the sweetest of leafs into merely another tool to divide.

    Thanks for nothing.

  9. politicians are crooks and the music industry is but canned persuasive distraction. santorum supports marinol and is against marijuana, i.e., he’s just another big pharma puppet.

  10. A shtty “singer” from a shtty metal band likes Santorum? Is he talkin bout the politician or that notorious frothy substance? What does this have to do with legalizing herb?

  11. How evangelical! Guess he agrees with the social engineering in the same way the democrats are trying to tell us what to eat, what to drive and be responsible for everyone else at the risk of your own loss. Santorum wants to tell us what to do with our bodies and when, what to put in them and when…I thought the idea was to get big government out of our lives. Too bad…another one bites the “social agenda”.

  12. Le candidat socialistenoté voici ce que ca le cloud computing créateur economie en images les de collecter parrainages. C’est ca marche les entreprises françaises et des français.

  13. WOW! Serious criticism for a musician who endorses a political candidate. Or in this case, might have. But I agree; musicians should not use their artistic success to endorse politicians. It is shameful, and in my mind, disgusting. It’s why I turn off any Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder or Jimmy Buffett music that may be on the radio. I also avoid any movies starring George Clooney, Susan Sarandon or Alic Baldwin. And the one I avoid the most for the same reason, Opera.

  14. Christ, most of the responders here need to go back to school to work on their reading comprehension. Rob’s post was spot on, but it seems most of you didn’t understand anything he said and are putting words in his mouth and misconstruing his intentions. I dont think I’ve ever seen so many straw men being beaten in one place before.

BTW, Mustaine has always been a panty waist bitch pretender. I never understood how he was able to fool so many people for so long.

I guess that should be expected in our crumbling One Nation Under Stupid.

  15. pot helps me stay off booz. dave you may want to just smoke pot.it will help you be more thoughtfull of others!!!
