Las Vegas Police Kill 21-Year-Old Father-to-Be While Serving Marijuana Warrant

In a shocking series of events that is still under investigation, Las Vegas police on Friday shot and killed Trevon Cole, 21, while serving a warrant that claimed Cole was selling marijuana. According to reports, Cole’s 20-year-old fiancé, Sequioa Pearce—who is 9 months pregnant—was forced to kneel and held at gunpoint in the moments just before Cole was shot.

A police spokesman told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that undercover officers had bought marijuana from Cole three times before the warrant was served, and investigators reportedly took an unknown amount of marijuana and digital scales from his home. Pearce, his fiancé, says Cole, who has no criminal record, “did smoke marijuana from time to time,” but was not a drug dealer.

The officer who shot Cole is a 10-year veteran who the Review-Journal reports has been involved in other questionable shootings. Police said he fired his weapon on Cole after Cole made a “furtive movement,” which Pearce denies.

While police investigate the incident, Cole’s family remains shocked and in desperate need of an explanation. Writes the Review-Journal, “They had been preparing for a birth, not a death.”

“We were mentally prepped to know in June we were coming to Vegas to see the baby, to be here for the birth of the baby,” said Cole’s aunt, Kimeryn Williams. “Not for this.”

I don’t need to tell readers how horrifying this episode is. As with other notorious drug raids that have come to light, there are obvious questions here that need asking:

• Did Cole pose such a threat to public safety that officers had to break through his door with guns drawn?

• Why were such forceful tactics used to arrest someone that police claim—at the very best—was a smalltime marijuana dealer?

• How much money and police resources were spent to raid Cole’s home and murder him in front of the mother of his unborn child?

• Were there no murders, rapes, robberies or more serious crimes occurring in Vegas on a Friday night that these officers could have been working to prevent or solve?

The message people need to take from this stomach-turning incident is the one MPP broadcasts over and over again: Marijuana does not kill people, but prohibition does. If marijuana were sold in a legal and regulated market, tragedies like this would cease to exist and police could better spend their time dealing with crimes more serious than the possession of a substance safer than alcohol.

There should be many developments on this story, so please stay tuned to the blog for updates.

This will not stand!!!

Everyone contact the Vegas police and tell them to 1.)stop using violent tactics to enforce non-violent marijuana offenses, and 2.) FIRE THIS TRIGGER-HAPPY LOOSE CANNON BRYAN YANT!

more evidence that prohibition causes more harm than it will ever prevent.. :(

I am a Las Vegas resident and this story is biased! He was a known drug deal and was caught selling drugs to the Airforces detective unit. (He lived right off Nelis Airforce base) I’m not saying this to be rude. I feel very sorry for his family’s loss but they ran a huge story on him during tonights local news. He was into way more than weed. This was an organized sting and his girl is the only person claiming foul play. I’m not an anti-pot activist…I am all for legalization but this story is twisted.

8 Wesley Willis { 06.16.10 at 1:07 pm }

@ LV Local: There was no proof of anything other than marijuana. I’m sure the cops will spin it like he was Nino fuckin Brown, and everyone will forget about this poor man and his famly.

But in America, we need a little thing called EVIDENCE before handing out death sentences. No guns, no hard drugs, no signs of either to be found at the residence, which he hadn’t left in some time. Is he running a vast meth empire during his trips to buy pickles and ice cream?

A police officer killed someone performing a questionable raid, under questionable circumstances. The Vegas justice system has covered for this same trigger-happy cop TWICE! What makes you think they wouldn’t try to make his most recent victim appear like a monster to cover his ass YET AGAIN?

9 Phil Osopher { 06.16.10 at 1:12 pm }

To get the warrant the police had to convince a judge to sign it. Judges don’t just sign anything.

10 Clarence { 06.16.10 at 1:13 pm }

I am not taking the side of the cops. It does not matter if he sold hard drugs. He was executed. Did he kill? Did he rob and steal? Did he molest or rape a child? Did he enslave another person? He sold drugs!! Now there will be a war between other drug dealers to see which one gets the business. This will happen as long as prohibition exists. Are we all to be killed so then the task force members will attack cig smokers? Obama does not give a flying fuck about the Americam people. All he cares about is himself and the proof is in his actions, not my words.

11 perspective { 06.16.10 at 1:27 pm }

if he sold to undercover detectives twice it is substantial enough evidence to get a warrant he did it three times a search was inevitable but police should only shoot in a real threatening situation the fact that he made a motion that appeared threatening is what should be the out rage. Remember New York when a man was shot while reaching for identification because it was deemed threatening by the police.

absolutely ridiculous

12 kyle { 06.16.10 at 1:41 pm }

yeah i heard about the poliece shooting in NY where they said he pointed a gun at him an they shot him 51 times an he didnt have a gun on him or nothing WHAT BULLSHIT IS THAT!

selling illegal substances 3 times to undercover officers is evidence.

The wife of the man murdered in the raid was the only one there to give testimony to what happened besides the police. Who else do you expect to scream foul play?? The police.

I am 9 months pregnant – I can’t even imagine the pain Miss Pearce is going through!

Prohibition is the evil here – if Gov’t would pull its head out from where the sun don’t shine and have the common sense to realize that a regulated, controlled Cannabis market trumps the current free for all that has been going on since Anslinger was head of the FBN, tragedies like this wouldn’t happen!

My condolences go out to Miss Pearce, the baby who will never know its Father, and to all of the people who loved Trevon Cole and now have to miss him forever. :-(

15 perspective { 06.16.10 at 2:05 pm }

Phil Osopher

a judge will sign most search warrants if the include hard evidence like multiple buys from undercover investigators. They are almost, but not completely, required to under law, and if they don’t it is viewed as irresponsible by the judge and can be used in elections against them and their position

16 Spencer { 06.16.10 at 3:50 pm }

Mark,

Jumping for joy at any humans death is sick. Even if you were wronged by that person. While the situation in vegas is depressing hopefully it used to shine the light on our failed cannabis prohibition policies. Maybe police will stop using swat to serve warrants on susspected drug dealers. Maybe a local leader will decide to legalize cannabis tax it and regulate it doubtful though.

27 Chazwicke { 06.17.10 at 7:19 am }

The prohibition has to be repealed.
Everyone loses here.
It frustrates me to no end that the generation who was going to change the world, buy the world a coke and sing in perfect harmony is the generation who is now in charge of the show and it’s ‘meet the new boss, same as the old boss’.
It’s our own fault though people. We keep voting the ‘same’ people in, time after time and expect things to be different.
I feel sorry for everyone involved.
I can’t hate the cops, they are just servants of the law, it’s the law that is the real evil-doer here.
This lesson was ‘learned’ nearly 100 years ago in this country and yet it is still ignored today.
LEAN on your local politicians.

To be fair, this man they murdered in cold blood was black, so it’s all ok.

That was sarcasm btw. I can’t watch COPs without realizing that 90% of their arrests are for drugs and it’s either a black or Mexican, yet statistics show that whites smoke pot just as much as everyone else.

I’m white and I’ve been pulled over once with my car reeking of MJ smoke and was just given a warning for running a stoplight. I can’t help but wonder how things would’ve went if I was black or Mexican.

35 Tennessee Activist { 06.17.10 at 4:28 pm }

As a war historian, an experienced USMC Drill Instructor retired, I can tell you the one hard cold fact that stops any war that has ever been and that is BLOOD spilled in great amounts. When enough blood is spilled or in more understandable terms, when enough people have died, wars stop. There hasn’t been enough lives lost over prohibition to stop this war on marijuana advocates. As tragic as this story is and every story just like it and worse, is still not enough blood to end this war. To date, it’s not enough blood to convince Americans that it’s time to end the blood shed. I believe when someone of great importance has been killed over prohibition then and only maybe will Americans change their hearts and the way they think about marijuana users. Till then, GOD HELP US ALL!

36 ElectroPig Von FökkenGrüüven { 06.17.10 at 8:45 pm }

Government logic: Just remember folks…it’s the DRUGS that killed him…not the judge who issued the warrant…not the cops storming his house…not the cops who had the guns…and CERTAINLY NOT the cop who shot him…it was the DRUGS that killed him!

Note: In March, the UN finally admitted that “drugs” are a “health issue” and not an “enforcement/punishment” issue…you didn’t hear a hell of a lot about THAT in the news, did you?

Edward,
I don’t think most of us are defending the crime. We are appauled by the use of deadly force for this crime not involving violence. Personally,I think most cops are great to have around to protect us and our families.They are one of the true heros. This cop is obviously trigger happy. How many other cops have been involved in the shooting of the suspect be it for any crime other than a life threatening one to the officer or others more than once or twice? Typical of some people to play down the serious crime being committed by this officer by using excessive force. And don’t forget about the negligence of the police department not to realize this cop is a loose cannon and take away his gun and put him on a desk or fire him one. Everybody just calm down. Hopefully justice will prevail. O.K.,I said hopefully.

There are three sides to every story and we are not hearing everything. I’ve lived in Vegas and eveybody turns their heads at the small sh*t. This doesn’t sound like a random pot dealer killing by some rogue cop. This was an execution and intended to leave a message. It’s a hell of a way to communicate. I hope everyone got it. I’ll admit when I got the link from MPP my blood boiled, but let’s use some reason here. This is VEGAS….smoking and selling pot is nothing if not encouraged by the tourism center. I’m sorry this happened in front of his family and I’m sorry for his family, but you don’t get killed in VEGAS for pumping weed.

63 UWSDWF { 06.29.10 at 8:54 am }

How dare a person bring his pregnant wife into questionable circumstances such as drug dealing. If you are going to be a criminal there will be certain risks you have to assume and one of those is death and incarceration. As far as I know there was no video of this incident nor was the writier of this article at the raid, so to draw speculation of what may or may not have happened is impossible, I’m sure I’ll get flame broiled for wanting all the facts before leaping to conclusions.
So far all I can see is that a person known to the police with evidence of drug dealing and illegal drugs in his residence put an innocent woman and unborn child at risk was shot during a raid on the place he was using to peddle drugs.

64 STONERFORLIFE { 06.29.10 at 9:26 am }

He was black, not a big deal.

69 Zedman2k { 07.12.10 at 10:05 pm }

Yes, if we didn’t have the drug laws people who live a “normal” life would not die.
In changing the drug laws the black market would not make any money and would not exist.
The same people who are “lost on drugs” will still die but they would not need to rob so much to pay for their death and “we” as a nation would not be paying for such “Government oversight.”
The prisons would change so that the “heavy” users can get help and if they don’t want it, well it’s their choice. They can die in those 4 walls.
The U.S.A. is about freedom not about control yet we think it is the same.
We passed laws that say you can drink alcohol, if you do for your whole life your KILLING yourself and if you have a family they pay a huge price, but that’s fine. I can smoke cigarettes, as long as I pay the taxes till they kill me and the people around me. 100% legal.
If I drove 27 in a 25 mph zone I am breaking a law, a law to “save lives”. I HAVE received a ticket for 27 in a 25 zone, if you think about it like the drug laws, the state just should have taken my car so I can’t drive. If I smoked pot, crack,.. The state would lock me up just because I commented a crime.
Their facts are that the dealers commit crimes so I’m only abiding them. I never did anything to anyone other then myself, case in point when you saw on T.V. How if you owned a S.U.V. You were paying for the terrorists. (2001)
Hemp, a fiber that can easily replace cotton, as in you can plant in in the same field year after year and needs almost no chemicals, is outlawed. That’s not the stuff that will get you high, the stuff that will replace cotton! Any farmer please let me know if I’m wrong. I don’t just want to say in the days of a founding fathers that it was a staple.
I really hope the people of the U.S.A. will stop watching their T.V.s and/or read between the lines, you are not free, your T.V.s are run from a few networks and in no time the Internet will be the same.
Let me sum it up differently, when you run a red light, you should go to jail for life because you “might have killed someone” not that you did, a guy smoking pot, crack, drinking booze, taping heroin “might” have done the same and might have killed someone.

70 jenni { 07.13.10 at 1:08 am }

The drug war has to stop now. It’s not only oppressing people, it’s killing people. What freedoms do we have if we cannot decide what we do with our own bodies? The right to get high should be a basic human freedom. The drug war has not stopped people from getting drugs, in fact, it has exacerbated it’s use. Any country that removes drug laws always see a huge dip in overall use. You can’t refute the evidence. No intellectual elites even feel that drugs should be illegal. Something should be said for the fact that our greatest scientists, historians, economists, writers and other professional intellectuals think that the fact that marijuana is illegal is completely outrageous. Carl Sagan was a pothead. Shit, there are police that think it’s a horrible law that needs to be abolished. Want less people doing drugs–LEGALIZE. Nobody with advanced cognitive abilities thinks otherwise.

I came across this via my friends facebook page. In reading all the comments most are focused on the legalization of cannibis. I find it funny that no one mentioned the treatment of a woman who was 9 months pregnant by police. She was forced to kneel at gun point. If you never had a loaded weapon held to your face I can say from personal experience that it is terrifying. Questions run through your head like is the persons finger gonna slip; are they as terrified as I am; am I going to die? The next thing that boggles me is the fact that a man lost his life over a movement/gesture. Was the gesture that scarry that he could not be subdued without discharging a firearm? I am sorry I do not take away from this story that cannibus should be legalized. I know a lot of functioning pot heads whos only thought is to get home from work and light up. I don’t knock any person for what they do, your life is your life but when your life is consumed with getting high, when can you get high and how your gonna get that is a problem. Suggestion (now this is my opinion and I am entitled to it) legalization of cannibus might be a good idea if regulations could be enforced. Because legalization can not be enforced it should not happen. Example: oxycontin and oxycodone have the same basic chemical structure of heroine and those are legalized and regulated drugs, but people still find a way to abuse this medication. Cannibis started out as a medication and look at what the modern world turned it into….recreation. So no it shouldn’t be legalized because it’s already been abused.

why? why do these fucking cops think they can walk so damn tall? why in the hell WOULD you raid someones house and kill someone over selling a little pot? and it’s true, fuck prohibition, it get’s people jailed, injured, or killed. Pot isn’t a fucking problem in the first place and I think that everyone needs to learn about it before you judge it first. watch The Union. either way, i firmly believe that the cop that shot the gun, should either lose his job or go to jail but, we all know the son of a bitch is only going to get suspended and possibly forced to attend a self help seminar. idk how things are over there but, that’s how this shit works where i live.

yeah, everyone who has had police involvement was innocent, and the police had no reason to search them, everyone says that… the cop is an “ass hole”… your a criminal stop complaining…

most of the marijuana in the US comes from Mexico… the place where the drug war kills people everyday. It is illegal… period… thats great if they legalize it… but until they do the money you idiots spend to get high goes towards a bullet that ends some ones life…

and for those of you that have never been in a high pressure life threatening situation, i will tell you where you can stick it… and I’m not talking when your “hustling” on the streets worried about getting smoked because homie doesnt like you… im talking you volunteered to serve your country or community to keep it safe from terrorist or drug dealers… yeah i am throwing them in the same boat, if you dont like it screw off, they all kill people or are the reason that people are killed. When your trying to enforce a law, and drug dealers are notorious for carrying guns, anyone would take every precaution to live through it… personally I dont know what happened, I WASNT THERE, but everyone here talks like they were… think about this, what if he told him not to move and he reached for something, what would you do… i would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6. (that means live rather than be killed)

I dont care what the possible side effects are of smoking marijuana and if they exist or not… thats not the issue, you ignorant infants cant look past your mindless little worlds and see that the people who provide your marijuana are murderers. You people make me sick, get over your “cause”… or at least stop doing illegal crap until they make it legal… there is a right way to go about things, and you all dont know what that is apparently.
