Do You Feel Safer Yet?

Customs officials seize $2.6 million in bongs and pipes at Los Angeles Harbor. Yes, this is really how they’re spending our tax dollars.

I think the picture at the link pretty much says it all.

2 skippy { 11.19.09 at 4:20 pm }

customs fails simply for implying that glass from china is worth ANYTHING let alone some random number pulled out of the air.

3 Dave { 11.19.09 at 4:22 pm }

It’s not like California is in major debt or anything either….How can the citizens of California not be up in arms about this?

4 Clarence { 11.19.09 at 4:52 pm }

COOL!!! I hope every bong, pipe, bat and roach clip from China is confiscated. We here in America have to pay our own bills and we have had enough of sending our money overseas. Let us buy from Americans. When I go shopping I try to buy American, always. I will never support a country that abuses human rights. NEVER!! I bought a coffee mug from MPP and was pissed. It was made in China and I called MPP and told them. I am still pissed and that was several months ago. I feel the same about mexican weed and I will not buy it. Overgrow big bro and the money stays in America! Keep tokin and overgrow big bro.

Pirates!!!

6 RevRayGreen { 11.19.09 at 5:55 pm }

American (North or South) and European Bongs only please…

7 Grandma 420 { 11.19.09 at 6:53 pm }

No, This just goes to show you just how many people smoke weed. The police have to confiscate it so the population won’t see it. Yep, working with the Feds!

8 m { 11.19.09 at 6:58 pm }

Clarence,
Generally, I’m with you on not buying stuff from countries that are known human right violators. However, after my own run-in with the law in the good ‘ol USA over my medical cannabis two years ago, I can definitively state that the United States does indeed engage in abusive human rights violations against its citizens.

Not that this should excuse the Chinese or anyone else, just that it is no reason to buy American as if that is somehow a magical way of avoiding products made in countries that violate the human rights of their citizens. It’s not.

9 DB { 11.19.09 at 7:04 pm }

Who in the hell is funding these stupid operations?

10 DB { 11.19.09 at 7:06 pm }

Also, how do they prove that these are illegal “drug paraphernalia” as opposed to being sold for tobacco use only?

11 JEP { 11.19.09 at 7:07 pm }

Taxpayers!

12 James Crosby { 11.19.09 at 7:12 pm }

End this stupid fucking war…. lol

13 R.O.E. { 11.19.09 at 7:12 pm }

Clarence,
I have to agree. This is the reason we are in such shape as we are. It pisses me off to see everything made in China , sold at walmart. Its worst than that though. I recently got a nice peavy guitar…ITS MADE IN CHINA!!!! We are even importing our food ffs! Parts of my harley is made in CHINA AHHHHHH!!!

Any way.

Do they really think it matters if they confiscate this stuff. People WILL smoke anyway. And yes we do make bongs and pipes right here in the good ol USA. I would rather pay an American to make things I buy…EVEN IF IT COSTS MORE! At least its quality.

Fix America…buy,produce,sell AMERICAN!

14 R.O.E. { 11.19.09 at 7:15 pm }

Hey MPP,
Why not sell American made cups? How many would pay extra? Let me hear ya!

Ok MPP, not beatin up on ya…just sayin.

15 ElisaG { 11.19.09 at 7:20 pm }

OMG! Somebody better warn all the headshops! How is it possible that “….it is illegal to import, export or sell drug paraphernalia in the United States….” , yet it’s been going on in just about major city in the U.S.? Ohhhh…that’s right…I forgot, headshops sell TOBACCO pipes and bongs….yeah right.

16 NewOldSalt { 11.19.09 at 7:29 pm }

How else are they going to smoke all that herb they steal from citizens?

17 HerbRx { 11.19.09 at 7:31 pm }

What a joke. You can by that crap anywhere. Whats the big deal

18 HMS { 11.19.09 at 7:43 pm }

#10 DB – That’s the first thing I thought. Everybody I know uses tobacco in their water pipes.

Just another example of the “Government Acting Stupid” show here on MPP.

19 R.O.E. { 11.19.09 at 9:14 pm }

Huhh Hey guys, correct me if Im, and please correct me if I’m wrong. 2.6million worth of bongs and pipes equals out to this.

860 bongs are worth 3,023 dollars apiece. HUH?

I cant see that . What are they line with gold?

DEA once again twisting the truth.

21 Emory { 11.19.09 at 9:40 pm }

Man!… Our government is all about peace, personal rights, and saving the environment…

oh wait,… Iraq War, prohibition, and now wasting perfectly good smoking accessories.

Hmmmmm…. I rescind!

22 R.O.E. { 11.19.09 at 10:43 pm }

I have to correct myself. It was 860 box of cargo. Damn cold has me in a fog.

At any rate, its still a stupid use of taxes.

23 Brent in KY { 11.20.09 at 2:37 am }

This was simply done as a show, used as a fear tactic, to scare the crap out of parents. To a new mother, not aware of the truth, this is proof that drugs are bad and that the governemnt is keeping her and her baby safe from all the potheads and their glass bongs.

Because we might smoke the baby?

24 R.O.E. { 11.20.09 at 5:06 am }

Ya Smoked baby is tasty…oh wait thats baby back ribs Im thinkin of;0

25 Clarence { 11.20.09 at 5:48 am }

M. I to was busted for my meds this year on my sons B-day, July 24. I still feel we should all smoke American weed with American bongs. I did get a new bet after everything was taken by the cops but I bought it from our northern neighbors. Canada is worth getting some of my money, not China. It is still wrong for the cops to save us from ourselves. One day I hope we can all enjoy our herb legally, with American made bongs. Tommy Chong will be who I buy it from. Nice Dream. Keep tokin and overgrow big bro.

26 mr reuben { 11.20.09 at 5:51 am }

Paraphernalia laws may be even more ridiculous then marijuana laws. Do they seriously think people won’t be able to smoke their pot if they confiscate all the pipes out there? All you need is some tin foil to make a makeshift pipe.

27 Clarence { 11.20.09 at 6:02 am }

MPP, when you get American cups, please post it. I will gladly smash my Chinese cup. And please do not buy from china again.

“US Government bans Apples because they found out you can make a bowl out of one”

29 J.W. { 11.20.09 at 6:46 am }

@ Clarence Do you support America? Are we not all here because our “masters” abuse OUR basic human rights? And thirdly do you really think that ANYTHING is manufactured here? O sure there are artsy craftsy people in their basements making stuff but real mass production occurs elsewhere . Then they tighten down the last screw in some “plant” in Peoria or somewhere and say it was made in America The last quality product in America is weed, Everything else manufactured here is owned by foreigners.
Sorry to get so far off topic, but ifyour’e looking for a country that doesn’t abuse the rights of its’ citizens then you came to the wrong planet.

30 Dan-o { 11.20.09 at 8:56 am }

So…Where can someone buy an AMERICAN made bong or bowl, that is quality made and CHEAP? You can’t. And you can thank our politicians(Dems & Repubs) for that fact. The fact is that the Chinese have embraced capitalism and are whipping our ass at it.

31 JohnInOhio { 11.20.09 at 11:18 am }

Wow, Homeland security saved us from the Bong! Was it a nuclear bong? Maybe it was the “Dirty Bong” we have heard so much about!

Sorry, I just wish they would focus on important stuff…like HOMELAND SECURITY!

32 JohnInOhio { 11.20.09 at 11:22 am }

Does anyone believe those bongs were worth $2.6 Mil? No wonder they are trying to keep our math scores low, so we will buy their BS!

33 Just Legalize It { 11.20.09 at 11:58 am }

wow… and yet you can go to any gas station or convienence store and but rolling papers and blunt wraps…. oh not to mention you can buy pipes and bongs in a lot of places too… and they are all on display, its not like you have to ask them to see them…..

34 m { 11.20.09 at 12:39 pm }

Clarence and everyone,
My point is that making a big deal ot of where things are made is kind of barking up the wrong tree. If we care about human rights, it’sm about our own rights being violated. Admittedly, there are lots of human rights violations out there, lots of jobs being shipped to wherever, etc.

As for what goods we need to consume good ol American weed, I can say that you can make most anything you really need with your own hands. Cut out the middlemen, make it yourself.

The one thing that is hard to do that with are papers. They pretty much have always been made overseas.

Hey if you guys want to try and help out the cause some more head over to Facebook and become a fan of Chase Community Giving. They are giving out money to charities. Vote for the Marijuana Policy Project and any other groups for marijuana reform posted on there. (Leap and Students for Sensible Drug Policy are on there as well)

37 NT { 11.20.09 at 10:25 pm }

I don’t know about you guys. But i feel safer. Thank you big government! Those bongs are evil! Help keep the streets safe we don’t want those bongs infecting the minds of our young children! warning! (sarcasm)

38 Ben Smokes Pot { 11.21.09 at 12:05 am }

Yes… like they can stop the immigrants and the drugs, now lets focus on bogs. The did arrest Tommy Chong for putting his FACE on a bong, let alone ever selling one, so I’m not really all that surprised.

39 Cliff { 11.21.09 at 12:21 am }

Another example of the Obama war on the American people. He is a POS just like Bush.

40 Lea { 11.21.09 at 2:25 pm }

Was unfortunate enough to have caught this on the news. What bothered me, other than the bongs being confiscated, was the Fox News reporters who told the story. Jane Skinner and the other guy, Jane said, “maybe you should explain what these are for, my mom won’t understand”; then the guy says something lame to the max that it was used for smoking, he pauses, looks at Jane, she says marijuana and then the guy says marijuana.

41 Casey { 11.21.09 at 3:26 pm }

sigh. I’m sorry to say this. But you can pull my bong from my cold dead hands :)

42 Thomas Catena { 11.22.09 at 1:23 am }

I know selling bongs is illegal because its considered drug paraphernalia, but how could they confiscate/destroy them if they were unused? I mean I live in NJ and we have smoke shops that sell them, they just make sure you don’t mention drug slang in the store and that “all products are intended for tobacco usage only”

43 Jack Eich { 11.22.09 at 8:40 am }

I used to be proud on america,but lately its being led by a bunch of stumbling morons. out of control spending,denial of the benefits of cannabis,and the continuing war on american citizens [I mean war on drugs?} Is this the america we want? I think not.

44 Jack Eich { 11.22.09 at 8:44 am }

our country is going down the tubes like most empires after 200 years,and the government is worried about bongs? what does that say about our government

45 End the Hypocrisy { 11.22.09 at 12:43 pm }

Can we just decide to stop paying taxes because we don’t believe in the wasteing our tax money on this BS. Isn’t Homeland Security suppose to be worried about terrorist threats, nuclear attacks and drug smugglers?

46 J.W. { 11.22.09 at 1:53 pm }

Of course there are ways, legitimate ways to not pay taxes.
1. Do as little business as possible using money as an exchange.
2. If you DO receive money you are obligated to report, give the lions share to a legitimate charity and write it off at as high a rate as possible (this allows YOU to choose how your contribution to society is spent)
3. DON’T REPORT ANYTHING THAT YOU’RE NOT OBLIGATED TO REPORT.
It’s embarrassing how little I pay in taxes but I do,in fact, contribute a fair share to all of you. And yes I am aware of all the little fees’ and surtaxes that they get in spite of all my efforts but overall I still come out ahead if you count the fact that only a tiny bit of what I pay supports tyranny.

47 DarthNole { 11.23.09 at 11:36 am }

Sounds more like this is a difference in definition. The police think these are “drug paraphernalia”, but what they forget is that they are simply glass objects. Without a residue of an illegal substance these glass ornaments are simply glass sculptures. Furthermore in the State of California Medical Marijuana is legal, so in essense the cops just destroyed Medical Equiptment!!! WHERE’s THE ACLU ON THIS ONE!!!!

48 Crazy Leg5 { 11.23.09 at 1:02 pm }

Wow what a surprise law enforcement officials are grasping to do anything because while they love chasing down pot users, more and more states are refusing to charge people for it. It’s tying up the court system for nothing. Police have become outlaws. Going against any state or federal laws with no regard. But the police are policed by police! Law enforcement are the main group next to insurance companies trying everything to stop the reality that is people want change..

49 Bruce { 11.27.09 at 4:57 am }

Sorry guys, but this is an entirely different situation. As a shop owner, I’ve seen so many blowers go under in the last year, mostly because of the glut of cheap, low quality, often dangerous import glass on the market. Just the other day, I had a vendor call me raving about the knock-off uprights he hed at half the price of an internationally known brand ! I personally will not be doing business with this company any longer,as I WILL not screw my clientel or the manufacturer that they are ripping off ! I don’t feel that this is a prohibition issue, rather a protection of the general public from sub-standard products and the greedy shop owners that profit from them ! Think of it like buying a bag of lawn trimmings !!!!!!

50 TH { 11.27.09 at 12:56 pm }

Smashing bongs is a lot easier and safer than trying to solve real crimes. The bongs don’t shoot back. Still a waste of taxpayer $$$.

51 LINDA { 11.28.09 at 4:55 am }

it’s really stupid for our own country refuses to help us that are dead dog sck.But that goes to show what our country thinks of us,it’s total human rights being refused all over.i know,i’m in it.there hasn’t been a day i have not been walked all over and never thought about,just kicked around.

52 da grinch { 11.28.09 at 11:18 pm }

I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see. I’ve smashed all your bongs right from under your tree. I smashed all your pipes and your woofers and puffers. I smashed all your huffers and your water pipe stuffers.

Don’t you get it? No more raids on medical patients? They needed something to do!

(hahahaha)

53 LINDA { 11.29.09 at 7:52 am }

I WILL ONLY SMOKE FROM AMERICAN MADE BY THE NATIVES.NO PROBLEM THERE……..

54 Steve { 12.01.09 at 3:44 am }

I agree with Clarence here. I won’t buy pot that I know isn’t domestically grown, because I don’t like my money going to Mexican drug cartels. I won’t buy Chinese bongs because of their human rights issues and the fact that the bongs probably have malamine or lead paint on/in them.
