Detroit Ballot Initiative Would Make Private Marijuana Possession Legal

A ballot initiative in Detroit that would make it legal for adults to possess up to one ounce of marijuana for personal use has been certified by city election officials, according to local reports.

A local group called Coalition for a Safer Detroit turned in more than 6,000 signatures to place the initiative on November’s ballot. According to the Detroit News, the City Council now has 30 days to pass the initiative into law or it will be up to voters to pass it in November.

Should the initiative pass, Detroit will join the growing ranks of cities that are now taking it upon themselves to implement sensible marijuana laws in the absence of federal leadership.

Don’t forget Illinois. Our medical mj bill is still on idle. It’s been over a yr and if not voted in by January it’s dead. Does anyone know if a ballot initiative in Illinois is possible. I can’t seem to find any info on that.

If we could get the bible belt to start supporting sensible laws first than we could free the rest of the country cuz everyone knows how arrogant bible huggers and rednecks are

this is a process that started in 1996 and in political terms is just now reaching the greater citizenship of the country. MPP I implore you to help any person who blogs on here about an innovative whether it is a town city or state. With every domino that falls we get closer to our goal.

complete legalization by 2015 come on people lets continue this snowball effect.

I can be in possession of a truckload (or more) of booze but only an ounce of cannabis? WTF!?

These “legalization” initiatives need to have a tax and regulate clause in them. Money makes the American system go ’round. Legalizing possession is great and all. But I would love to see someone other than California make the jump to regulating retail sales (someone else that is. Go Cali!). Detroit’s the perfect place too. A city that has literally hit rock bottom. The taxes to them would be like manna from heaven. The improvement in the city’s financial situation would be far more drastic. Maine’s ballot proposal is the same way. It takes some great steps, but no one’s going to see the drastic improvement possible with legalization unless we go all the way and regulate retail sales and TAX it. Bring the whole damn thing out into the light and out of the black market. In my opinion, there’s no reason to have a legalization bill the DOESN’T have a tax and regulate system built in. That’s a major selling point to me!

Good work Detroit. Me and the rest of the people of Michigan are on your side. If the politicians refuse to listen we’ll do the hard work for them.

now other states need to step in line and do what is right….

I agree with you #9 as Ben Franklin said “Do well for youself while doing well for others” ,and tax and regulate will do well for others in the long run as well as doing well for thoes who will participate in the whole of the marijuana trade.

Detroit, you are the envy of all Americans who are pro-marijuana. Please don’t be lazy and miss this opportunity to make Michigan a pro-marijuana state. The best you can do is acceptable, but you only get one chance at this and if you get it right, just maybe I’ll move to Michigan. Lord knows the State of Michigan needs some new life for business, it’s depressed in my opinion and needs some new businesses, big business! Marijuana is your ticket to financial stability, please oh please give it your best effort to make Michigan a user friendly State for marijuana and new business. The vision is to attract new business in a way that it puts money and opportunity into your pocket book and I’d love to live in Michigan if this legislative MJ passes.

This one city or town at a time is crap. The white house should just get a set of balls and do the right thing and legalize cannabis. November can not get here soon enough.

17 Jeremy R. { 06.05.10 at 11:25 pm }

Just wounder if that passes if it will be for the whole state or just lower Michigan in Detroit?

MICHIGAN voters can REGISTER to VOTE at http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-50050_50420-175878–,00.html
The related pages of FAQ indicates “You must register at least 30 days before the election. This gives the clerk time to process the forms and send you a Voter Identification Card. You must also re-register to vote whenever you move to a new city or township.”

The important point in this process is not what people believe or what they say to the pollsters. What matters is that they VOTE, and the first step is to REGISTER. This is the key: Get the people registered. People need to get up off the couch for ten minutes TODAY, go to the website, print the form, fill it out, and mail it in. If this bill fails, it will not be because people don’t “believe” or “know the truth,” it will be because people fail to TAKE ACTION. Getting registered to vote is an absolutely 100% essential task that will either make or break this effort. Get people to register TODAY. Provide them the link and remind them over and over again. This has to be done before October 18 OR THEY CAN NOT VOTE! Repeat this link and get people registered. It takes TEN MINUTES and could save them TEN YEARS.

A correction: For Michigan voters in the November 2 2010 election, the cutoff date for registration is October 2, 2010. The date in my previous Michigan comment was an error.

to the Tn. Activist~ Please check out my Facebook Page Medical Marijuana for Tennesseans! Please join and have others join too! You will find important links for the legalization of Medical Marijuana.
To All~ I am almost 50 years old and have several conditions that cannot be cured that Med. Marijuana helps me with. I cannot self medicate because of a damned Pain Contract I was forced to sign. Being forced to take my Pharmaceutical Scripts gives me more health problems and side effects that I have to get other Pharam. Scripts for. it is a viscous circle and I am not a Gerbil~ I WANT OFF THIS RIDE!

Hopefully in November, the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes in Detroit will pass. It’s all on the Detroit citizens to make this happen. Please, do not depend on the city council to approve this because that would be too easy.

Philly should be next. Yesterday the news report came out, that 90% of young adults here are ineligible for military duty, many due to criminal records. This is what lumping all “drug” crimes & dealers together will cause (it’s still schedule I!). The need for service men & women — without a draft — and pulling us out of the recession — without a larger deficit — should bring around some new supporters..

31 VIRGINIA { 06.16.10 at 9:11 am }

WHAT ABOUT VA! im currently on probation for 3 years and piss test for 6months for a marijuana bowl, no other criminal history EVER!… this is rediculous they think they are making more on imprisoning people but in fact. im not paying the fines. id rather be in jail for 30 days than give in on the bogus laws WHEN IS VA GOING TO HAVE A CHANCE TO VOTE!!

32 Jeremy R. { 06.16.10 at 12:52 pm }

Is this going to be for the whole state of MI or just Detroit ?

33 Ryan M. { 06.16.10 at 6:05 pm }

This is a great oppurtunity to turn around the idea that people have about marijuana, that it isnt a deadly drug and can be very benificial to everyone…how can we get Taylor MI to give in to the idea of legalizing up to one ounce for personal use?

34 Lisa W { 06.18.10 at 8:10 am }

well, it seems to be all great here in Michigan with things moving forward NOT ..Michigan is NOT protecting patients or caregivers!! I just had my life destroyed by the DEA here…. I am left to fight it out in court!!!

35 Eric Harger { 06.23.10 at 5:08 am }

Born in Ann Arbor, I’m impressed and a little proud of Michigan and Detroit sensibility. Now a resident of WV, I’m disappointed that not only is nothing moving forward, but in fact we are sliding backwards into ignorance and puritanical hate.
Anyone with ideas for WV, please contact me. Peace
