Washington Post: It Just Gets Worse
About the same time as I was posting about the Washington Post’s refusal to run MPP’s response to Charles Lane’s preposterous anti-medical-marijuana diatribe, the Post allowed Lane to strike again, with yet another online column filled with distortions and misstatements. I’m old enough to remember when the Post was a great newspaper. Yesterday I was angry; now I’m just sad.

i wouldnt worry too much about it Bruce. First, its in the opinion section and second, i only found 4 comments that were in agreement with Mr. Lanes OPINION and they were from simple ignorance.
As much as I hate those kinds of articles too, you gotta admit that America’s view on this is shifting big time. Stereotypes are being proven false, truths are getting out. Even our government is on its last straw. With the internet, they can no longer spew reefer madness. Although some of that reefer madness helps our cause.
The premise of this latest tripe IS infuriating. MPP, NORML et. al. do not quibble when asked if they think pot should be legal for recreational use. A mocking headline with ‘medical marijuana’ in quotes, and calling it a trojan horse is two lies in one.
I hope you convince them to run your rebuttal, or a rebuttal to this further nonsense.
People wonder why newspapers are dying. It seems pretty obvious to me. Who is the audience for this crap? Is this guy working for Big Pharma or the alcohol lobby?
Has MPP identified lobbyists working the prohibitionist side of the argument?
something is wrong with that website, I was signed in and it kept telling me I wasn’t. BS.
Somebody post this comment for me, please… here it is.
Chuck Lane,
I understand from reading your article that you believe marijuana has medical benefits but that your real problem with the situation is that we are using medical marijuana as a stepping stone to legalization. Yet you say that you are mixed about complete legalization of the plant and even support a public debate on it.
Honestly, what do you think the result of the debate would be? Just read the comments on your article if you need a hint.
Marijuana is a wonderful plant that we have. You can’t overdose on it, making it less dangerous than Tylenol. It brings out laughter and enjoyment from most people who smoke it. It doesn’t cause you to develop a physical dependence and its even shown to make people drink less. It helps people eat and it helps with nausea. It’s the best cure for a hangover ever. Weed has been a part of my life now for 7 years and after 7 years I am well on my way to earning an MBA at my university. Weed does not make people stupid, and only a little forgetful.
It’s nothing wrong with smoking weed after a long day just to relax. It’s a better alternative to alcohol and pretty much anything in my opinion.
I personally feel like your opinion of marijuana is the result of false teachings. That is the same reason why only 8% of people over 65 support legalization.
It’s because they simply don’t know anything about what they are talking about. It wasn’t around in vast quantities when they were growing up.
Don’t you know that it’s easier for a 12 year old to buy weed than to buy alcohol in this control. We have absolutely no control over the sale of the drug unlike alcohol.
So it’s allowing the drug cartels to destroy Mexico and kill thousands and thousands of people. Why can’t you understand that prohibition means more violence and less control?
We’ve already discovered that when we regulated and controlled the sale of alcohol that the violence and damage from prohibition ended and we were left with just the problem of treating alcoholics.
This time all we would be left with is treating the marijuana smokers… which in fact need no treatment at all!!
Dude, even the president smoked pot. Just get it a rest Chuck.
I invite you, Chuck Lane, to come over to our side where science prevails over ideology.
It’s not too late to change your mind… and nobodies gonna laugh at you. You’d be doing the right thing.
I wouldn’t let it get to you too much Bruce, he’s just another prohibitionist corrupted reporter. When cannabis is legalized, thats right I said when, he will try to change his views but it will be too late. Everyone will remember the people that supported prohibition and they won’t even be able to find a job at Mcdonalds. They will be their own downfall in life and then in death they will have to pay for all their crimes against humanity!
We will prevail and when we do NO ONE will have to suffer like this ever again!
This chuck lane needs to be fired!!!
I posted a comment on the post and also wrote a letter to the editor
I saw the previous article that Charles Lane wrote and all the readers comments that followed afterwards. The next article he wrote starts off with:
” My post about “medical marijuana” stirred a lot of comments, some of them approving, the vast majority hostile and vituperative — and one or two actually threatening. So, let me try this again.”
I read those articles and almost everyone except for a very few were upset, but none of them were hostile, vituperative, and threatening unless they were added so that he can make those remarks about how mean and rude people are to him for starting a reefer madness and prolonging the anti-marijuana propaganda. The article is just a set-up to cause trouble among readers who actually read his “yellow journalism” approach to marijuana.
well judging from all the comments….its clear that everyone thinks chuck lane is an uniformed, dweeby little douche who can’t shut the fuk up. keep digging you fool….you’re in deep now….and no one cares to save your sorry ass.
i can’t stand the conservative assclowns who have to hate on cannabis because THEIR teenagers are old enough to indulge and they don’t like it….newsflash for ya….i don’t give a rats ass about your kid…i suggest you educate him honestly and let him make his own decisions. don’t do it thru your lame ass articles…cause its more than clear he’ll be seeing you as the true idiot you are, especially after reading all those comments. LOL!
I’ve been aware of the poor and biased reporting done by the Washington Post ever since I started browsing mapinc.org after Marc Emery’s extradition began in 2005. Since then I’ve been prepared for this drivel every time I see their name, and I’m not exactly a news-hawk… I’m sure most people know it is a biased fish wrap.
Bruce, Just keep spreading the truth. People inherently know when they are being lied too… Keep up the hard work and Thank you!!
I feel you, Bruce. There is a bit of encouragement in reading Mr. Lane’s article. That is all of the reader comments and responses. This guy does not have many supporters.
As we get stronger, those who opose the use of cannabis are getting weaker. Only four responses were negative so far. That is wonderful. One day we will all be able to smoke legally in public.
The Washington Post is channeling WR Hearst from the old days.
They see the writing on the wall and it bodes ill for their little fiefdoms.
The real world, our world, is creeping in on their fantasy. Soon, they will be left with nothing but stories of the good ol’ days when an ignorant public believed their BS and catered to their every whim. Hell for the WP is an eternity of being ignored.
Prohibition is taking its last breath.
To everyone reading this, go to the link to the article scroll down and register to comment its free. Next post a comment! Say something anything if you say nothing your are only helping keep the status quo. Get up and fight. God be with us.
Bruce, the guy is a last gasper of prohibition thought and from the responses it appears he has few if any supporters of his writing on this issue .I posted a comment asking why the Post won’t allow a rebuttal and further challenged Lane to openly debate this issue with you.. I’m sure you would be glad to open this persons eyes..and I would like to see him properly educated and stop regurgitating propaganda….
I also cannot post a comment at the Washington Post even though it shows I am logged in. Either Lane is totally clueless or he has some personal issues but who is he anyway? Like my PaPaw said “there’s no use beating a dead dog.”
Wow, what a hateful, closed-minded person Mr. Lane appears to be from his little diatribes. Got news for ya, Mr. Lane, -no one asked you. Did I ask for your advice when my family members died from cancer? I don’t recall asking for your opinion on how to best treat my 3 chronic diseases. Walk a mile, bud.
ignorant, biased, uninformed liars like this guy have, in my own opinion absoultely no business being in the public eye or anywhere near the press for that matter!!!!!!!!!!
fire his ass!!!!!!
LEGALIZE IT!!!!!
The Post’s website is not fond of Firefox, so if that’s your main browser, don’t worry, it often posts your comments despite it’s complaints about being logged in.
Yes, Lane is a prohibitionist mouthpiece. I have stridently argued against both of his posts, and have significant company on the response boards. We DO need to make sure we remain calm and reasonable in our responses. Making threats, or being openly hostile is usually self-defeating (not that I am always able to restrain myself when my dander gets up).
The longer reason and logic are allowed to be brought to bear on this failed ‘War on Drugs,’ the harder the DEA and ONDCP have to spin their failure.
It made me angry too Bruce. Commenters are correct in saying he doesn’t know his facts. It’s all dribble, the same thing repeated again and again. Only thing is we now have the knowledge and bravery to squash each and every lie.
Mr. Lane should look back in the early 30’s and he’ll find that the road to legalization for alcohol started with the acceptance Medical Alcohol. He should also realize that because citizens who are paying attention to this issue and are still in favor of marijuana after 50 years of lies and propaganda from the special interest groups in Washington DC (logging, paper, cotton and fiber to name a few) that choice does matter in a democracy. Now if we can just get the idiot journalist (used loosely) to show that the numbers reflect acceptance and then do the majority a favor by getting out of the damn way.
There is a reason my browser never touches that “news”paper. Something happened to them a few years back, and while they still have some journalists, many have jumped ship.
