San Diego patient to strike back for law enforcement mistreatment

Remember that gut-wrenching footage of the wheelchair-bound medical marijuana patient being pulled out of his chair and into the back of a squad car? The victim of this brutality was Rev. Paul Cody, operator of the Hillcrest Compassion Care medical marijuana collective in San Diego.

Paul has told the San Diego City Beat that he’s planning on filing a legal complaint for his treatment during the raid on Hillcrest. Paul is paralyzed from the waist down due to a motorcycle accident, and he repeatedly told the police officers that his condition required that he receive special treatment but sadly, the thugs carried on as if terrorizing a man in a wheelchair was just another day at the office.

“I told them again and again, I’m paralyzed, I have to be in the front seat,” he told CityBeat later.

Cody says he told officers repeatedly of his special needs, but they didn’t listen. With his particular injury, he can’t support himself sitting upright, and he has special requirements for how his legs are supposed to be arranged, which mandates that he sit in the front seat of cars. But Cody says cops cuffed him behind his back and shoved him into the back, where he slumped over. He says he has the bruises to show the damage done to him.

Needless to say, MPP wishes Paul the best of luck in his challenge. More importantly, we look forward to the day when local officials everywhere in California finally begin following the state’s long-standing, voter-approved medical marijuana law so that people like Paul are no longer victimized by their own government.

Good! I hope he wins and more people see the mistreatment by the police force. That was disgusting to see and I wish Paul Cody all the best.

2 Just Legalize It { 09.16.09 at 5:46 pm }

I hope those disgraceful excuses for police officers get shitcanned! They treated him like he was a violent criminal when he was clearly not. You sell cannabis, legally, and you get manhandled into the back of a police cruiser. You steal tens of billions of dollars(Madoff) and you get a phone call telling you how it’s going to go down and you get to wear a suit and keep your pride.

They always talk about sending the wrong messages to kids. Maybe they should look at the message they are sending themselves.

In Kentucky you would need to get an adjustment with flashlights and sticks. Maybe even pepper spray, just to round out your accommodations. Wouldn’t want you to miss out on all the fine care.

I hope this is a wake up call to every law enforcement officer. Follow the state law and not your own agenda. I hope this man wins so he will be left alone. San Diego, start writing checks to mj. patients.

The sadness is that the other day I told my father in law about this tradegy and his response, ” There’s more important things going on. they’re not me, why should I care.”

This coming from a 1st gen. jamaican american. all of america is concerned about health care.

he wouldn’t listen to me. I tried reason. basic human rigbts. state sovereignty. he stills sees me as just another stoner with an agenda.

how do we reach people who know that marijuana is good and yet willfully allow our government to oppress their fellow citizens.

oh well, it’s not me, right?

it makes me sick.

please anyone feel free to add me on myspace. peace.

Sue the fuck out of them.
The only way they learn.

I want to see class-action law suits from legions of MJ patients cost these prohibitionists more than they spend on arrests and eradication efforts.

San Diego’s police and government in general are all so afraid of losing one dollar of support from Republicans who keep them in office that they really and truly do not care about the rights or condition of the citizens they were voted in and paid to protect. As far as Bonnie, she is doing what her rich friends tell her to do. She is a puppet with a religious, conservative hand up her ass.

Police brutality has existed in this country since the beginning and it’s not about to change.
some 6 years ago i was arrested for small possession of marijuana, had a $20 bag on me. I was taken to the precinct, fingerprinted and strip searched twice (very humiliating). When i was being transported to the booking facility, this one cop knocked me out while i was handcuffed in the van.
My hands were cuffed behind my back and i was just rolling around the van till my wrists were almost bleeding. I started begging an office to loosen up my cuffs and was told to shut the F up. I’m pretty flexible, so i brought my hands around to the front under my feet, it’s an old trick that almost anybody can do. Unfortunately for me, the officer saw my little trick and stopped the van. He came around, opened the door and asked me to step forward. As i crawled towards the door, he punched me straight in the face and knocked me out.
When we got to the booking, he told me that he punched me because i could have had a weapon on me, such as knife. Please note i was strip searched twice before transporting. So how could i possibly have a weapon on me????
FUCK THE POLICE. FUCK EVERY SINGLE ABUSIVE COP OUT THERE WHO CROSSED THE LINE.

Jeff Newman : Good Point

I’m sure these National Organizations will keep their fingers crossed and just “hope” for the best. F-CK HOPE!!! I’m tired of words and press releases. We need some action!!!!!

To the Green Soldiers throughout the United States on the front lines of this drug war, it’s time we stand up and support our brothers and sisters out on the battle fields, in every state, in every city.

THIS DISCRIMINATION MUST END NOW!!!!!

If you haven’t yet, tell you’re friends and family that you are a Cannabis Consumer and educate them on the facts, especially the medical facts. We must each take our own moral responsibilities to correct and educate those naive to the facts in order for us to gain their support. http://www.MedicalCannabisInstitute.com has a collection of good videos that I link to everyone to get them informed.

If you’re a Californian, it’s a must you sign the California Cannabis Initiative. Tell your friends and family and ask for their support.

The website is:
http://www.californiacannabisinitiative.org/

It’s time for a REAL CHANGE in America through our actions. How dare they discriminate or look down on us as Cannabis Consumers for their false ideologies!!!

We must start to treat them they same way they treat us. Who ever does not respect my rights and freedoms as a Cannabis Consumer, F-CK YOU!!! Now if we all thought like this, this situation would turn around really fast!!! We need to look at them as if they’re crazy or naive. Get insulted when someone talks bad about another stones!!!!

We are over 15 MILLION STRONG with 6,000 new recruits everyday!!!! United Stoners of America!!!

Anyone interested in joining this Marijuana Militia can e-mail me at:
green_soul_jah@yahoo.com

My apologies if I come on a bit harsh, but this is crunch time people!!!

Let’s push these Prohibitionists into extinction!!!!

Rev. Paul Cody – Don’t know you personally, but I pray you sue the hell out of San Diego Law Enforcement. Hit em right in the wallet where it really hurts, and use that money to give out free medical marijuana right in front of City Hall!!!! Now that would really make a statement……..

19 steven in iowa { 09.17.09 at 8:51 pm }

this is b***s***- not to mention a SICKENING DISPLAY OF POLICE BRUTALITY!!! there are so many people who could be legitamitly helped by medical marijuana- those with cancer, aids, tdk, the depressed and many more. why then do politicians drag thier feet when they know all too well that large minorities such as those in favor will not be ignored. every minority these days seems to hold some form of power in the federal government. why are those of us in favor the only unheard minority the country when they know THIS SANDBAGGING WILL COME BACK TO BITE THEM IN THE A**?????!!!!!

20 Nick { 09.17.09 at 10:55 pm }

I would sue the city, Bonnie, the DEA, the SDPD and the BRUTAL criminal of a police officer who roughed up an innocent person, unable to defend himself, for millions of dollars. Maybe something good will happen out of this if it ends up costing the city money, or perhaps Bonnie will lose her job. Thanks to the media for catching this horrendous act on video. Pretty hard to refute video evidence in court. BTW, didn’t the City just form a committee in the last few days to regulate San Diego’s collectives? This city government even fights itself………

If you saw me one time you would never forget me.

You see, aside from a very long beard, I use a very large walking stick to support me while I walk and move around.

I can not use a regular cane because I have a balance problem and I have repeatedly fallen over while attempting to use a regular sized cane.

Upon my doctors advice I started using a large six foot walking stick because it provides the support I need and gives me balance.

I have been like this for eight years and most all of the police in this city know me and the police in my area know that I am not a criminal or a problem to society.

My problem is that the local city council has permanently discriminated against my handicap by not allowing me to use my essential walking aid while in the chambers at the city hall.

They did this after a ‘upstanding citizen’ complained that they thought it looked like a weapon and I could ‘possibly’ hurt someone.

When I go to the chambers to speak I have to find someone to support me with their arm, if I can, or I have to just stumble around as good as I can while leaning against dirty walls and pillars or grasping windowsills and chair backs, all the while being sneered at by suit wearing-short hairs.

I stood in front of the city council and explained to them why I was using a large walking stick and even showed them my disability paperwork.

Several times I requested that they recant their demand and allow me use of the stick in the chambers but it was refused over and over.

I got so sick and tired of being unable to move around without my stick that I eventually could not go downtown anymore because my balance is so unstable.

How would you like to live in a city with citizens in control like this?

Another time I got arrested downtown for having three medical joints in my pocket.

Despite the officer knowing I had a balance problem I had hit my head several times on and in the car.

I lost my footing another couple of times in the various rooms and buildings I had to be in and bumped into walls and furniture which left marks on my body.

The local jail is not friendly to people who have balance disabilities because they lack surfaces that can be grasped for support so I ended up leaving jail, after getting bailed out, with bruises and bumps from all the encounters I had with the building and equipment.

I went to court for the three joints and once again I had to ‘surrender’ my legitimate and legal handicap walking aid to a court flunky because they thought I was going to assault someone with my medically debilitated body.

So I sat there waiting my turn to plead not guilty and I was disappointed to see another disabled person in the court sitting across the room playing with his cane while he was waiting his turn in front of the judge.

In the end they dismissed the charges for the three joints and the entire situation became a non issue yet it was a waste of time, money and effort for me.

While the police can assault disabled people physically, it is the mental abuse of the rest of the system that does even as much damage.

The drug war has ingrained intolerance and prejudice into the hearts and minds of those who do not or will not think for themselves and it’s that ignorance that has compelled people like police and suit wearing-short hairs to believe they can do whatever they want.

Rev. Paul Cody best of luck in your pursuit and I want you to know that there are more of us out here that have suffered in pain at the hands of these ‘people’ so your not alone.

IF YOU BELIEVE IN GOD

MANNA IS A DIVINE BENEVOLENCE. Manna is a gift from God as Holy Sacrament. To deny me my sacrament…
is to deny me my God and my Faith. AS I CAN ONLY BE JUDGED BY MY CREATOR AND MY SELF…at communion…which is a common faith, experience, and expression shared by a family of believers, as well as their intimate relationship with God…I EXAMINE MY CONSCIENCE, AND MAKE ATONEMENT WITH GOD. The prohibition of my sacrament is a violation against my Faith, and “THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF.” By prohibiting my sacrament…”I AM DENIED THE ABILITY TO JUDGE MY SELF, AND HOLD MY SELF RESPONSIBLE FOR HE RESULTS OF MY ACTIONS.” Therefore…I declare that any law prohibiting my Faith, and “THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF” is VOIDABLE. Any law prohibiting the medicinal efficacy of cannabis will be treated in the same catagorical procedure as a breach of law, and the American Policy.

OBJECTIVE:

PROTECTED BY FEDERAL LAW…We the People of the Genesist Faith…as a grass roots movement, by majority rule, and referendum…move to LEGALIZE MEDICINAL CANNABIS in all fifty sovereign states as expediently, efficiently, and effectively as humanly possible to protect those members of the Genesist Faith with a medical need. I thought, in this country, one is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Cannabis never got that presumption of innocense. Its innocense is our objective.
