New Hampshire Comes Within Two Votes of Passing Medical Marijuana Law

Today, the New Hampshire General Court narrowly failed to override Gov. John Lynch’s veto of HB 648, which would have made the Granite State the 14th in the nation to have an effective medical marijuana law.

Two-thirds majorities were needed in both the state House and Senate to override Lynch’s veto. The override passed in the House by a vote of 240-115, but came two votes shy in the Senate, which voted 14-10.

This result is particularly disappointing because an overwhelmingly majority of New Hampshire residents (71% according to a recent poll) support protecting seriously ill patients through medical marijuana laws. Unfortunately, several cowardly legislators remain under the impression that voting in favor of compassionate and commonsense laws might hurt them politically.

Fortunately, this fight is not over. MPP and our allies in New Hampshire will continue to work toward marijuana policy reform in the Granite State. Already we have seen tremendous progress: In 2007, the state House voted down a medical marijuana bill, but today, 67.6% of the House voted to make a medical marijuana bill law.

This is ludicrous! Honor the will of the people, you are there to serve THE PEOPLE!

New hampshire on sidelines for now,but “pyric”victory may pay off in future.N.H had no grow your own provision,New York has no grow your own provision. This is a trend that must be resisted.N.H can now start over on a more user friendly path.Public initiative will support a grow your own provision(is public initiative possible in N.H.?),and anti reform legislators can be targeted.A good bill delayed is better than the mere passing of a watered down bill today.

its ok…. let them make a better bill and see more states legalize it and try again next year

how sad they should run those cowardly politicians out on a rail. They think their own personal agendas are ahead of the entire state. Nothing says end of democracy like this.

Sounds like there is one governor and 10 senators who need to be removed from office.

I don’t live anywhere near NH and I’m heart-broken. Gov. Lynch lacks compassion for the people he serves. That’s sad.

Look at the bright side. NH now has 11 politicians that can be voted out by a 71% majority when they are up for election again. This may be the only way we’ll ever really win. If an incumbent has shown themselves to be anti-MJ, not only do they NOT get my vote, I will be sure to vote for someone that will next election. Let’s vote them out. Who want’s someone to govern them that is either ignorant or corrupt (or both)? Kick ‘em out. Give someone else a chance. Once the pols understand they represent ‘the people’, the sooner we’ll see real change.

Yes, if you do want to see change, you do have to vote the opponents out of office (or enough of them that the rest get cold feet and have a convenient epiphany before the next time this bill comes to a vote).

And if you want to vote unresponsive politicians out of office, you have to put your money where you mouth is. Donate to friendly candidates! But way more importantly, find out who is running against these 10 state senators, and who’s interested in challenging them (espicially in a primary race). If the challengers are good on our issue, support them financially.

Thre’s no way Lynch survives the next election. Republicans hate him. Democrats hate him. He doesn’t stand with the people on issues they support. And he has absolutely no spine (regardless how you feel about the issue of same-sex marriage, his pathetic attempt to avoid taking a stance last year was embarassing).
If NH came within 2 votes (in one house) today, we should all take comfort that the bill will pass in the very near future. Remember — the vote was for a veto override. Once there’s a governor not willing to veto the bill next time, we won’t even need the override votes.

Everyone should take the time to listen to this lecture that was given by Paul Armentano (Deputy Director for NORML) regarding the safety and efficacy of marijuana. A lot of the information we discuss is right there for you to reference and there is a lot of information that you may not be aware of. I have taken the time to break down the audio and take notes about the different sections of the lecture so that you can easily move to the part of the audio that you are interested in hearing.

It amazes me that Lynch is so popular yet takes so many unpopular stands. Lynch literally is the only thing standing in the way here. Hopefully either the Republicans can put up some kind of Libertarian style candidate or the Democrats can grow balls and vote out somebody who has again and again petrayed the central principles of there party.

Thanks for the post.
I’ve found over the years that there is more to story than what we all really know. From what I gather there are provisions in the bill that make it not as attractive.
Is this why some of them didn’t vote for it? or were there other reasons?

..maybe they should demand a fair and a little more HONEST re-count!

Governor John Lynch respectfully, ” do You know our Great Lady Governor Linda Lingle of Hawaii?

Governor Lynch, “do You know Utah’s former Governor John Huntsman?

I think the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Utah should ring a bell somewhere…tinkle..tinkle.

Veto/schmeetoe..quit wasting the good hard-working American’s money on being a simpleton.

I told Lady Lingle today about pot being phyto-remediative to cleanse this green earth, i.e., Chernobyl..so get real..or get out of our cotton-picking faces you lame-duck leaderships.

Tomorrow would be a mighty fine day for that.

Future Farmers of American (FFA) – 98% of ditch-weed is eradicated and why ? …plain old stupidity…all plants need to be left alone to save this old world..and if mankind keeps up the attempt..I believe that humans will be eradicated before the plants.

If all the hard-drug plants were left alone too people would die at least peacefully and naturally at their own unfortunate hands. They can and do anyway and always will.

Drug culture thrives within each and every multi-culture on the earth..so live and let live..let it be..stop killing any plant crops, i.e., trees especially, and we are certainly apt to see brighter blue skies above in a short few years of positive change.

I respect anyone’s beliefs..but The Book of Revelations in The Bible predicts all of these heavenly angelic words somehow reigning from the skies.

I myself can relate that to literally being these scrolls we are all reading and writing..scrolls.

It is all true predictions that the words of Truth come about, but they had a hard time in any ancient writing describing what a sattellite might be fore-told to come into being.

I interpret personally the, “fruit-bearing plant providing monthly, ” in The Bible to be the green-house tomato.

If and when they terra-farm Mars, “I want to go!”

Who owns your body even though you are not harming anyone?
THAT is the relevant question. The substance of marijuana is irrelevant. It could easily be alcohol, tobacco, coffee or a pack of twinkies.

The right to self ownership is at stake…and the governor stands in the way!!!

Sad when ones employees will not obey and we can’t fire them.
If these jackasses will not do as they are told, then why the hell do we continue to PAY them?

I enjoy a good toke. However I think that we may pushing too hard for the legalization. What do you think is going to happen when the federal government gets their greedy lil paws in our pockets for this. Tax, tax tax! Just look at the inflation rate on a product that they already allow us to smoke (tobacco). I roll my own cigs, and for a can of tobacco I used to pay 12.00$. Overnight the price sky rockets to 50.00$ Most of this is tax money that goes to taxes. So for now I would just be content with the way things are. Just keep it in your home, to yourself and those around that you enjoy partaking with. Keep them greenbacks in their natural environment, your pocket.
