L.A. County D.A. Continues To Invent His Own Rules

When it comes to medical marijuana dispensaries and their right to exist under California state law, Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley doesn’t seem to want to listen.

Earlier this year, Cooley ignored the legal opinion of California’s attorney general when Cooley claimed (incorrectly) that virtually all medical marijuana dispensaries were operating illegally and should be shut down.

Now, after two L.A. City Council committees rejected calls to ban the sale of medical marijuana, Cooley is once again making up his own rules, declaring that he will prosecute dispensaries even if the city council adopts an ordinance allowing the legal sale of medical marijuana under state law.

Perhaps someone should remind the district attorney that he is paid to uphold the law, not invent it.

Can’t the State Attorney General be appealed to for intervention?

District Attorney Steve Cooley is disobeying the law and should be held in contempt.

If he does this, he is not only going agaist the will of the people but breaking state law. He doesnt have the luxury of enforcing only the laws he like. If he does this, cant he be arrested of at the very least lose his job?

That Cooley… we’re going to have to do something about him.
He’s just dragging out this situation and wasting time and resources.

Wow! District Attorney Cooley sounds just like someone else I hear about a lot here in Arizona….who could it be….hmmmm…oh yeah! Joe Arpaio! He doesn’t listen either! Ahhhhh….I feel safe now! I am so sick of these idiots disregarding law and engaging in vigilantism. Super heroes are vigilantes. These guys are not. They’re just idiots!

WTF is wrong with him. The people want this. The city says it’s ok. The Obama administration says it’s ok. The AMA thinks it’s a good idea.

Is this guy elected or appointed? Either way, residents of LA should call for his resignation.

If he is not capable of upholding the law….he should resign or be fired…..what corporation would tolerate insubordenation to policy?

Cooley should be tarred and feathered…PERIOD!

So this dude Cooley thinks he can personally gut an industry, force it communistic, and axe 10,000 jobs?

For his next act, he’ll command the tide to not rise.

This guy is really showing the true colors of law enforcement right now. I have long seen them as storm troopers with out heart or common sense. it will be a real benchmark of where democracy is at if ca lets this kind of ideology continue at these levels.

Hitler ran his own agenda. This asshole is in the same bag. Last I heard, we live in America, not in a dictatorship! As long as there is people like this in our own gov. we will fight for his removal. Hey Arnold, “Why are you allowing this idiot to force his will on the people of your state when everyone in America can see that he is not much better then the gestapo?”

File a motion of injunctive relief requesting that he be permanently barred from doing what he is doing. Also inform the public about jury nullification and start a campaign to have him removed from office.

Write to Mr. Cooley and let him know how you feel. Don’t be vulgar, just let him know your displeasure with his vigilante stance. Email to : webmail@da.lacounty.gov

I can’t believe he’ s willing to attack fellow americans while aiding the cartels by keeping them in business !

People like this have absolutely no place in government. This type of thing would have gotten him tar and feathered in the revolution days.

I have a question, not sure if it’s a silly one or not. My son’s actually asked me and I don’t know the answer: Cooley says he’s going to prosecute regardless of any city ordinances that might be adopted, but he can only prosecute, right- He doesn’t have the power to make arrests? The police do not have to arrest if the dispensaries are not doing anything outside the ordinance, so what is Cooley actually going to be able to prosecute? Are my boys missing something here? Can he compel the police to make arrests even if the dispensary owners are not afoul of the city laws?

People, understand that I live in L.A. county, have all my 42 years. I see what is happening on a daily basis. My wife has a serious need for Cannabis. Most of the people that frequent the Cannabis clubs are very healthy young adults. Hmm, lets see here. Steve Cooley is doing his job. Sorry for the reality check, but this is the situation. The local laws are the laws. You cant make a PROFIT off Medical Cannabis. However you can be a non profit org. To me this stipulates that you can only charge the amount of money that it costs to create and sell the herb. Sure it is a technicality, but that is where we stand at this point. Soon this issue will pass as there are a few ballot measures to fully regulate cannabis similar to alcohol that are being circulated, in my forward thinking state. At that point in time (2010) we will no longer need a DR. to tell us who may actually benefit from cannabis. I don’t know about Steve Cooley’s fate. And I don’t care. But I do know first hand what the situation is, starting from casual user to medical user. The end of prohibition is coming, and that right soon.

Hey if you guys want to try and help out the cause some more head over to Facebook and become a fan of Chase Community Giving. They are giving out money to charities. Vote for the Marijuana Policy Project and any other groups for marijuana reform posted on there. (Leap and Students for Sensible Drug Policy are on there as well)

It’s idiots like this who need to go away. What a waste of taxpayer money and time!

Jeff said: ” Most of the people that frequent the Cannabis clubs are very healthy young adults.”

So what medical school did you graduate from Jeff, and when did you become their primary care physician? I assume you are their doc because you seem to know all about their situation.

Really….this type of stereotyping gets me angry. A lot of people with HIV/AIDS “look” healthy on their good days.
