How Does It Feel To Be On the Losing Side of History?

bruce-on-cnbc-061809

I don’t normally blog about my own TV appearances, but Thursday night on CNBC, debating medical marijuana with former prosecutor and Drug Watch International board member Terrence Farley, I found myself almost feeling sorry for him. Not because I’m such a hotshot debater — watching the encounter later, I could easily spot a dozen things I could have done better — but because I suddenly saw what it was like to be on the losing end of history.

Now I think I know what it must have been like to be, say, the last premier of East Germany, standing guard over the fading embers of an empire in irreversible decline. It’s a little sad. Like them, the Terrence Farleys of this world no longer have a real case to make or a reason to justify their existence. They just cling to what they do because, well, it’s what they do and they don’t know anything else.

Still, those last rulers of East Germany hurt — and sometimes killed — an awful lot of people whose only crime was to seek freedom. The Terrence Farleys of the world hurt a lot of people too, so I won’t shed too many tears when they end up on the ash heap of history next to those who ruled the last remnants of the old Soviet empire.

i love the part where they start talking about marinol :-D

Hi Bruce, u did good Last Night.

3 Eric { 06.19.09 at 10:12 am }

I laughed the whole way through cause the man had no rebuttal or argument in general. One thing though, I think when you debate someone in Law Enforcement you should ask them if they are afraid of losing funding and their jobs if marijuana is legalized for any purpose. I would love to see their response.

4 Will S. { 06.19.09 at 10:22 am }

Bravo Bruce!
His argument drifted away like a fart in the wind. Even contradicting himself while he spoke. The day of reckoning is near.

5 bhonze { 06.19.09 at 10:29 am }

Hey Bruce,

Great job! I don’t know why those guys are always reffering to smoking; it’s just to make it sound worse so they can copaire it to cigaretts. If you really listen to the debate you will here he admits marijuana has medical benifits and the only problem he has is smoking it. So now as you already said many vaporize, SO problem solved! truth is these idiots just want to keep f@*’ing American citizens. I THINK IT GIVES THEM A WOODY!!!

lol….Bruce you laughed…its great. That old shit should be on our side. Bruce says, “Everything that he just said is false.”….I shit myself laughing sooooo hard..also, when they say that when we are trying to get it legalized for medical and its only to get it fully legalized federally, Bruce, you should have stood up, put your left hand limply over your chest, and started saying, “duh, duh, duh, deee dee dee.”….this is great. GO BRUCE GOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Terrence Farley’s organizational affiliation is a lie. He was tagged as representing the New Jersey Narcotics Task Force Commanders. Marijuana is not a narcotic — period. Besides, they have a bias that has nothing to do with marijuana’s effects — they are worried about their jobs. Sad to say, but they can’t stop drugs now, there will still be a tiny group of people who use drugs, so if the target group was reduced 10-fold they might be able to make a difference then.

As for marinol, I’ve tried both. Cannabis is much more effective in reducing my symptoms and is much cheaper than marinol. All the law does currently is act as a price support system for the manufacturer of marinol and their less effective and much more expensive product. Given the choice, most people would choose natural cannabis for medical use.

Hey Bruce, great job last night.

I feel sorry for the people that cling to there ideology’s that have been proposed and put in place by the dominant class without thinking about it themselves and making their own decisions. I really feel sorry for the citizens that buy into these same ideology’s without question. I guess its our job to inform people that want to be informed, but some just dont want to listen :)

Fantastic job, and believe it or not the host last night on cnbc seemed to be on your side. Its a sign that the truth is being heard.

15 Doobie Howser { 06.19.09 at 11:14 am }

Surely this has occurred to other folks, but I’d like to pose it where someone might have the clout to follow up.

Recently a large scientific study found that marijuana use, even ‘heavy’ use, did not cause cancer. However, as we’ve all heard marijuana smoke contains more of the problematic tars and combustion products than tobacco smoke. This suggests there is something in the marijuana smoke that prevents the development of the disease. This surprised the researchers, but probably not most of us following MPP.

The large sample size used in the study suggests that the researchers could not eliminate all tobacco smokers from the study, but rather accounted for the confounding variable statistically.

THE POINT I WISH TO MAKE IS THIS: the data used in this study may contain evidence that marijuana can help prevent the development of lung cancer in tobacco smokers. Such a find would surely make headlines and drive one more nail into the prohibitionist’s coffin.

16 Joe Just Legalize It { 06.19.09 at 11:24 am }

We ARE “The Legalizers” lol I just love the sound of that…. Legalize, Regulate, Educate, Medicate! Please, everyone just go to WedMD and do a search on Marinol and tell me if you think it’s a “safe” alternative to marijuana…..

17 Jeremy R. { 06.19.09 at 11:31 am }

I posted a few post on the AC360 most did not get approved but the ones that did made some good points towards our cause. Being tonight is the last night for the live blog lets flood the AC360 live blog with all our information and what not to help the cause. I am deffinatly going to be on there doing so and hope every one else will be as well.
We the people want it legalized and taxed… LOL they may call us “the legalizers” but hey there the idiots who started the war so they are “the idiots” as we are patriots defending our rights fighting against the injust of prohibition.

22 Jeremy R. { 06.19.09 at 12:15 pm }

Do not light the spliff to soon till we win we all must be on our game and keep the pressure on till it is legalized . Once their is a bill that does legalize marijuana then and only then should we really cellibrate . Do not get me wrong this is a huge step for us but that is what it is at the moment. As long as it is illegal we must keep fighting and with people such as Bruce and others who are on our side it is a matter of time . We just need to keep it up as we all know…

23 Cannabis Pundit { 06.19.09 at 12:27 pm }

Although it is important to compare cannabis to alcohol or tobacco to highlight the hypocrisy of it’s prohibition. I think it is also of value to compare cannabis to to something else out there which actually shares many of it’s properties.

And I’ve figured out what that is. Chili Peppers.

Cannabis contains the secondary metabolite THC and Chili peppers contain the secondary metabolite Capsaicin.

They are both substances which bind to receptors in the brain and effect the central nervous system. If cannabis fits the definition of a “drug” then so do chili peppers.

Both “drugs” can cause an altered state of consciousness and cause a slight decrease in the body’s temperature. If enough of either are consumed they can temporarily incapacitate the user.

Like cannabis, some people are very fond of chili peppers and some people cannot stand them.

Both substances have conflicting research out there. Some studies suggest they may promote cancer, while other studies suggest they have cancer fighting properties.

And on a personal note, if you ever find yourself without cannabis and in need of a stress reliever, you should try eating some extra hot Indian food. You need to at least break a sweat from it for the effect to kick in. It’s the closest thing to a cannabis substitute I’ve ever found.

Ron Paul took a strong stand in support of the Constitution and State Sovereignty – by stating that laws and regulations of Marijuana should be on a state level.

“If California wants to legalize it, let ‘em legalize it,” Paul told host Richard Greene on Air America’s “Hollywood CLOUT!” program.

He said that he believes that the U.S. Constitution gives the fifty states the right to legalize hemp production or marijuana. He said the issue was a matter of personal liberty but added that drug users should not be entitled to government-funded treatment if they abuse legalized drugs.

“If drugs are legal and people misuse them, then they do it at their own risk,” he said.

Bottom line, said Paul: “I do trust individuals to make their own decisions.”

26 Tony { 06.19.09 at 1:00 pm }

Hey guys Ron Paul and Barney Frank just introduced new legislation like 2 days ago to get rid of federal penalties for marijuana personal use,,please go to NORML.com and fill out their letter to our congressmen and help get our cause achieved!

27 doug { 06.19.09 at 1:08 pm }

The guy contradicts himself when he talks about how harmful a drug cannabis is, yet he acknowledges the potential benefits of cannaboids, and how NO ONE dies from pot, not to mention that cigarettes are legal, even though 250,000 people a year die from them.

haha what an idiot, great job bruce, but the guy made himself look like an idiot

28 Bruce Mirken { 06.19.09 at 1:21 pm }

Actually, Tony (#26), you can contact your congressmember from MPP’s action center: http://www.mpp.org/federal-action/

29 Gandolf { 06.19.09 at 1:50 pm }

The old drug warrior. He reflects on his life and career jailing drug users. At his age there is no way he will change his views. It would be admitting to his family, friends and neighbors that his whole life had been a lie, that even he couldn’t see happening all those years. At one point, in his mind, he was a good lawman helping society. Now I’m sure he’s seeing the writing on the wall that the drug war is near over. A failed attempt to control the masses. Lives and property destroyed for what?…….A drug war that’s acheived no goals, that is responsible for the real war to the south which is heading north at break neck speeds. I fear for the dangerous times ahead because the old goats won’t admit that they’ve handled it all wrong for too long. God bless America!

30 Green Devil { 06.19.09 at 2:03 pm }

I know MPP is for Medical Marijuana, but the last question in this interview would make it seem that MPP is not for the California Prop 215 in all entirety. Does MPP favor state-controlled systems ovwr private California-runned dispensaries?

~ Green Devil

31 Green Devil { 06.19.09 at 2:04 pm }

(edit: over privately held dispensaries in California). Sorry about that.

~ Green Devil

32 Bruce Mirken { 06.19.09 at 2:11 pm }

Green Devil, there wasn’t time to get into the details, but the dispensaries in Rhode Island will be privately run. The difference from California is that they will be licensed and regulated by the state, with a clear set of rules from day one. Because California’s started off not regulated at all, and since then there has sprung up a crazy-quilt patchwork of varying rules, it’s unfortunately been possible for some less-than-ethical folks to cause problems for everyone. Having rules is not a problem as long as they’re reasonable and don’t impede patient access.

41 Tennessee Activist { 06.19.09 at 6:12 pm }

Bruce Mirken,

Please don’t feel bad, keep your focus on the people your saving. The lives of dying patients desperate for a cure, or at the very least, comforted in their pain are hanging on to every word and action by you and the goverment hoping to legally gain access to life saving hemp medicines. My wife is a Hospice Nurse and the bottom line in Hospice is making people comfortable at the time of their deaths. Cures are rare in Hospice but in the future I hope cannabis will save many more lives than anyone expects. This will open a whole new can of worms against opponents who have denied patients medicines that actually cure illnesses like certain types of cancer.

42 RevRayGreen { 06.19.09 at 6:25 pm }

awesome job Bruce….way to bring it…..

43 You Got Off Easy, Bruce { 06.19.09 at 7:11 pm }

Like it or not, but Sabet is the barometer of argumentative success on this issue (not that his arguments are per se sound but as a debater). Once he gets put in his place, it’s academic. Please don’t let Rob debate him next time MPP get the chance.

44 Keegan { 06.19.09 at 8:41 pm }

That was the funniest aruement EVER. Not only did the man not have his facts right, he even contradicted himself and made the entire argument against marijuana look stupid. Considering Sanjay Gupta was on Anderson Cooper just one night ago saying there ARE medical benefits for marijuana, I’m not sure where this man gets his information (you can’t even call it “facts”), this is definetly looking good for marijuana legalization especially with the bill Barney Frank has introduced!

Last day down on AC360 towards the live blog to help the cause and a lot of great posts. I posted a lot with others and being now that the live blog on AC360 has ended for the week have to say now the only thing we can do is do what we are doing and see what happens after we do all we can to see results. It is by no means saying do nothing on the contrary we still need to keep doing what we are till marijuana is legalized and taxed. I personally want to thank every one for a well done job this week as well as hope that every one enjoys the weekend. Thanks again to all fellow supporters…

I can see where Bruce is coming from how ever the prohibitionists wanted the war not us we simply are defending our selves so if the prohibitionists want to play with fire let them burn. We have been burnt by them with out them feeling sorry I say what goes around comes around right back so Bruce do not feel sorry they did ask for it…

58 Richie Rich { 06.20.09 at 8:02 am }

The only thing I would have added Bruce would be this:

” Doesn’t it sound strange to be discussing science and health care with a cop? Isn’t this the job of researchers and physicians? Why do the police always refuse to acknowledge that facts in favor of the vast sums of money they get for supporting Prohibition? I guess I answered my own question.”

Bruce made that old codger look like Anslingers ghost crawling from a grave to scream more lies and spread fear, as always. Great job Bruce!

Good job for the amount of time allowed. The news people don’t want to give it too much time though.

Sorry to be the pessimist here however, in spite of all the recent coverage I still don’t see it happening. There’s too much money to be lost by prisons, pharma companies, cops, alcohol and beverage, and so on.

I’m still reeling over Obummer laughing at the town hall meeting.

66 Jeremiah Bartholomew { 06.20.09 at 4:23 pm }

Yeah, I don’t think it’s going to happen either. It’s not like they’re going to just do away with the huge police state apparatus that the drug war gave them the excuse to build. It’s not a pessimistic thought. Just a pragmatic one.

I love the circular arguments of the opposition.

BUT! “Hey Guys, guess what marijuana doesnt

marinol plz”
Marinol doesnt have the additional cannabinoid
compounds that true marijuana possesses. These

anyone else hear about this? california medical marijuana dispensaries, will have to label the weed as Contents may cause cancer when smoked.

72 Christina { 06.21.09 at 8:43 am }

Bruce, you did great! I was very pleased to see how well this ‘debate’ went. It seemed that even the guy reporting was willing to call BS when needed. I showed the video to a friend of mine who is a big supporter of reform and he was floored to see that this actually aired on TV!

While I am sure there are those who get MMJ prescriptions for the sole purpose of getting baked without the hassle of law enforcement, I bet the majority of cardholders have legitimate reasons for their cards; after all there are so many uses for marijuana besides just serious diseases. How many people get prescriptions of Vicodin just to get high? I have seen LOTS.

A few months back I had a horrible flu virus and for an entire day had a crushing migraine headache and constant vomiting. Later in the afternoon a good friend of mine brought over a little piece of mj for me to smoke to alleviate the nausea. Within ten minutes my migraine was dulled but not gone, and I was able to eat a bit of food, swallow some ibuprofen and water, and keep it down. The ibuprofen took care of the migraine, but the mj is what got me to the point where I could take it without vomiting. I recovered completely within a few hours and was able to go back to work the next day. :) Just think, if I had to take Marinol for my nausea, I would have puked up the capsule before it could even begin to work.

73 Philo { 06.21.09 at 9:08 am }

OK, I like to consider myself ‘up-to-date’ on this stuff, but I believe I heard right near the end something I did NOT know…. Israel has a medical cannabis program? Really?

74 Gary { 06.21.09 at 9:39 am }

Today on CNN Headline News. A story about a woman who is Bi-Polar that tried marijuana for relief but became addicted and suicidal. “Just find a Dr. online, it’s easy”. This is a completely one sided story about one single person. I wonder how this story came to be. Who found this woman and how/when/why is this news ? Perhaps a new tactic from the propogada machine. After all the recent positive reports about the benifits of medical marijuana this piece on one single person is suspicious. Of course the report starts with a heavy negative tone, “medical marijuana leads to addiction and suicide”. They have the “profesional opinion” from some unknown Dr. who clearly disagrees with MMJ. When you listen to the woman speak (her identity hidden) you hear her say “marijuana saved my life for a few years but the made it worse”, so I stopped”. She now takes Lithium and attends Marijuana Anonymus. The woman notes she spent $1000 a month and smoked 7-8 joints a day. “A bong in the morning, at work, at home in the evening” “it was so easy to get”. All the anti MMJ slogans very carefully placed. I think at best what it was is a person suffering from Bi-polar and was not getting the right treatment blaming MMJ. At worst a new propogada tactic to further confuse the public. We need to keep an eye on this shit and shoot it down asap. I thought the whole story was made up bullshit. I could not find it on CNN HL News to view or comment. I really wanted too. Anyone else see it ?

77 Bruce Mirken { 06.21.09 at 2:17 pm }

For Will (#71) and anyone else following this: The rules for listing environmental cancer hazards under California’s Prop. 65 (which is what resulted in marijuana smoke being labeled — inaccurately, almost without doubt — as a carcinogen) are very, very conservative, erring on the side of labeling something as carcinogenic if there’s any doubt. The problem is that marijuana smoke, like ANY type of smoke, does contain known carcinogens. But most people will never receive a dose that’s enough to cause cancer and, even more importantly, THC and many other cannabinoids have well documented anticancer actions, which appear to effectively neutralize the actions of the carcinogens in smoke So this is baloney, but look for our opponents to try to make hay out of it.

78 Lea { 06.21.09 at 2:26 pm }

Thanks Cheebs1. Didn’t finish reading it but will get back to the link later.
What struck me was how in the heck Israel got this one past the U.S.
Glad they did but the question remains and will probably haunt me for awhile.

79 Jeremy R. { 06.21.09 at 2:47 pm }

The propogada machine is just like any machine if you take a bolt from away from the machine then in time the machine shall break or be destroyed . The huge steps we are taking and doing is just like taking away a bolt from the properganda machine that prohibitionist are using way too much . This being said if we keep the prussure up towards our cause the prohibitionists machine will be destroyed if not at least broken. In short we all need to keep doing what we are doing to win our rights as Americans and to get marijuana legalized,taxed and decriminalized . Once we have MJ legalized,taxed and decriminalized we then can enjoy the fruits of our labor. So lets keep doing what we are doing including contacting our reps and if our goal is not reached by election time then lets elect an official who is willing to legalize,tax and decriminalize MJ. I urge every one to take action even if those who have all ready done so . It may be asking too much but as long as it is a just cause as ours we can not just sit around and do nothing for “for good people to do nothing is letting evil prevail” We are good people and with the work and actions we are doing shall prevail. Keep up the good fight and let’s show the people who are against our cause that we have rights and won’t give up regardless of what they may try to pull to keep marijuana illegal and criminalized. Best of wishes to all fellow supporters and reps of the cause . Also to all fathers hope that you all have a great fathers day..

I remember reading that article back when it was first posted, Jeremy R. It has become very apparent in recent months that Obama has no intention whatsoever of seriously considering this matter. When I watched the much anticipated Online Town Hall, I was on the edge of my seat. I’d spent hours on that site voting for the many different issues I thought should be discussed, which included the question of legalization. To see Obama laugh like a twelve year old boy when presented with the question was like a slap in the face. To later read in the paper about how the Town Hall meeting was “hijacked” by “internet trolls” spurred on by the likes of NORML and MPP really pissed me off. My husband and I both work full time, we pay our f*ing taxes and are out there in the world raising our boys without a scrap of help from anybody; and we are regarded as “trolls” and “hijackers”? Three million people voted up the legalization question, and we got treated like a bunch of unruly school children. Everybody back to your corners, put your dunce caps on!

My bottom line: if the states don’t take the upper hand on this one, nothing will get done. Our president is too much of a pussy to legalize marijuana and quell the violence at the border (and countless other unnecessary violent acts that don’t get that kind of attention). I hope nobody thinks that he just hasn’t considered the facts. He knows the facts–he’s a very smart man. Unfortunately for all of us, he is pro big government. And big government says: Marijuana=bad. You=criminal. At the very, very least I can say hey…. I *didn’t* vote for him.

for poster #71

In 2006 Donald Tashkin, M.D., Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles concluded not only is there no link between marijuana smoke and lung cancer, including “long-term” and “abusive” smoking, he found a positive health effect amongst marijuana users.

Bruce:

GREAT JOB…. It was good to hear you stand up and knock him off his perch. Finally I heard someone bring up vaporizers as an alternative delivery source. When the anchor quipped that people wouldn’t “look cool” using a vaporizer, it would have been good to explain to him that the prohibitionists constantly use the “smoked marijuana” term when describing the medicial use and that it has not future for medicine. Mr. Farley went back to that point and actually had to reiterate that he was talking about “smoked” marijuana.

You did a great job overall and we are lucky to have you as our spokesman.

Keep up the good work Bruce.

One thing that really bothers me when I hear it, and which is what I believe will be the last argument to be waved as a pathetic scapegoat for opposers of marijuana freedom (for EDUCATED ADULTS). “It’s going to hurt the children.” This has been the cover that legislators have been hiding under for too long.

#85 I agree and being he did not take the issue at the town hall meeting also did not vote for him matter of fact if he does not legalize and tax MJ or at least decriminalize MJ be for next election then I am sure not going to vote for him when or if he re runs. I urge every one to do the same that wants mj legalized and taxed or at least decriminalized . I know of one official I voted for and after I did found out that he is anti MJ so he wont get my vote again as well. Matter of fact I have posted a reply to an email I have gotten from him here:

Thank you for contacting me about the legalization of marijuana. I appreciate hearing your views on the subject.

I do not support the legalization of marijuana. Legalization would belie the seriousness of the social, health and economic costs of drug use. In addition, some experts believe that this approach would lead to an increase in drug abuse, which our country simply cannot afford. The United States Chamber of Commerce estimates that lost productivity, accidents, higher medical claims, increased absenteeism and theft of property resulting from drug abuse by workers already cost employers billions of dollars each year.

While Congress cannot simply legislate an end to the drug problem in this country, we can make things more difficult for the drug growers and traffickers, encourage reductions in the demand for drugs through education, and address the social costs of drug abuse by improving treatment and rehabilitation programs.

Best Wishes.

Sincerely,
Carl Levin

When I got the message I made an oath that if he wants my vote it won’t happen . We need more people in office who are for legalization and taxation from Senator to House of Reps to a president who is not afraid to put action towards the cause and pass such a bill that will legalize and tax MJ. Obama said he smoked but is not for the cause he is a hippocrate just as Clinton and Bush is the only difference is Obama is Demicratic and not republican . Both republicans and Democratic need to listen to the people in stead of just sitting in office doing nothing that the people ask heince as I had said “we the people” is suppose to be in the constitution but what is really happining is it is “WE THE GOVT”

91 Jeremy R. { 06.22.09 at 10:09 am }

total bs we need to keep fighting for our rights as Americans and take back the meaning of “we the people” in accordance of the US constitution and not let our government walk all over our constitutional rights. We need to continue the fight till one day we have marijuana legalized and taxed or at least decriminalized . The government kept or rights violated for over 7 decades and will continue to do so if we do nothing but bitch to our selves we all must right our reps take action by electing officials who will listen to us and take us seriously and all other means that is in our power such as petitions and blogs to name a few. Lets keep up our fight till we win and are truely free.

Oh Bruce STOP it, stop it…your absolutely killing the opposition! Had you done any better in your debate, I think that old dinosaur would’ve croaked on camera. No scientific evidence? HA! I kept yelling at the screen: “vaporize it, eat it, drink it”. Was that guys only argument that it harms you to “smoke” it. Change is on the horizon, can you feel me America!

Legalization cannot happen fast enough to suit me. However, I am in Texas and I know first hand how draconian and barbaric the Texas system is. These people will fight the movement until their last breath. MPP, can you help out here in Texas? Please?

One of the core concepts of my journey down here on this Planet is to hurt as few people as possible. Marijuana has allowed me to help many stressed out and dying friends. In life it is true that we make mistakes and then, if we are really lucky, we might get a second chance to do it differently, a do over, a chance to really make a difference in a life is a honor few get to experience. Politicians are in a unique position to accomplish this Miracle!!! I am glad that I only have to answer for my 50 going on 51 years on this planet. Mercy is a quality that is lost on so many who make the Many pay for the sins of the few. Mr. President, Please help us NOW!!!!

102 Richard Savary { 06.29.09 at 8:12 pm }

That they will wind up on the ash heap of history has not yet been established. The moment the drug war becomes affordable again, these guys will be back stronger than ever, preaching prohibition. If we don’t seize the opportunity to achieve legalization now, the tide may turn, and we will have missed the best chance in a century to see justice done.

103 coleen { 06.30.09 at 11:35 am }

You were great if we took everyone out of jail for pot there would be enough room for killers herion and crack dealers rapest I have a friend doing 10 YEARS for pot 10 YEARS the nicest person I know WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH OUR COUNTRY

104 Robert Vetter { 07.01.09 at 12:15 am }

Coleen , This Government drew it’s line in the Sand long ago . The builders of Prohibition declared war on the Marijuana Loving Public long ago. You can either quit smoking weed and surrender your freedom and enjoy what they want you to enjoy , and they will not disturb you. If you on the other hand decide to give them the Finger and say up your ass!!! Being Free has often meant being Persecuted, Ask the American Indians , they have Hundreds of years of being Persecuted for their religious beliefs. So , In your heart of Hearts…
We are exercising the same God given freedom that the American Indians are and continue to due . I am just as much a warrior as any American Indian. I Served my country. U. S. Army Signal Corps. There is no man alive that I would be afraid to get into a ring with Indian or otherwise. Feel your Freedom before you lose your Freedom.. Protect your Freedom… And above all , enjoy the persecution.. …. It will not last forever , and when it is over, you will have done heroic things.. You will be a Hero Too!!!!
