Former drug czar John Walters may be out of government, but that doesn’t stop him from taking his anti-marijuana zealotry to the masses.
Yesterday, he appeared on CNN to debate Harvard economist Jeffrey Miron on the merits of ending marijuana prohibition. Dr. Miron had little trouble tearing apart Walters’ arguments, but one statement of Walters caught my attention.
At 6:53 in the clip below, Walters begins a tirade about medical marijuana in California, saying “it has been reported in the news” that there are more medical marijuana dispensaries in San Francisco than there are Starbucks coffee shops.
What Walters says is technically true — that lie has indeed been reported in the news. What he fails to mention is that the source was none other than John Walters. And those news reports were widely dismissive of Walters’ fib. Both Starbucks and the San Francisco Department of Health refuted it.
But by cleverly distancing himself from his own lie and attributing it to “the news,” Walters is free to repeat it as much as he wants without ever being held accountable.
It’s as if I were to assert in this post that John Walters was the inspiration for the movie “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” and some other blogger picked it up and posted it. That way, I could go on and on about Walters’ reported retarded sexual development and just conveniently fail to mention that I was the one who first reported it.
But of course, that’s ridiculous. John Walters’ offense isn’t sexual immaturity. It’s that he’s a liar.

Keep exposing the liars for what they really are. Let the people know what they lie about and who is spreading the lies. Run adds if you have to in order to counter the liers and have them go to sites to find out the facts. The public will soon turn their face away from the liars and towards the truth and know. This would make great ammo in the California debate. Exposing Walters for being the fraud that he is will undoubtedly turn some heads and show the world what’s been going on all along.

Here’s a response in regards to the increased potency over time argument that prohibitionists often use:
Potency is a valid argument for negative health effects of many drugs, largely due to the possibility of an overdose. Since there have been no reported cases of death by overdose from a marijuana user, this potency argument is irrevelent. One could ingest or smoke marijuana that is hundreds of times more potent than TODAY’S marijuana, and while the effects would probably be felt for quite some time, there is no probability of an overdose which is the sole reason to measure potency as a detterent for legalization.
Last time we heard it should be up to the people and not the government to decide. Thanks to NORML and the MPP we the people are finally being heard. After all what good is prohibition when all it does is drive the exspence on fighting the legalization and taxation of Marijuana when their are facts such as this to name but a few:
If the USA legalizes and taxes all sales of medical marijuana and non-medical use.
Why should marijuana be legal?
* People have a basic right to make choices for themselves as long as their actions do not harm others.
Responsible individuals in a free society should be allowed to choose whether or not they use marijuana. Individual liberty is a fundamental value.
* The government is wasting our time and money by prohibiting marijuana.
Taxpayers are forced to pay billions of dollars to persecute, prosecute, and incarcerate people for having marijuana. If marijuana were legal and regulated (like alcohol and tobacco)
this money, plus tax revenues from marijuana sales, could be used for other purposes such as education and health care.
* Prohibition is not an effective solution to the problems associated with marijuana use.
Marijuana, like tobacco and alcohol, can be abused. But prohibition is expensive and ineffective; education and regulation are better solutions.
Regulating sales of marijuana and teaching people the truth about its health effects will allow us to minimize the harms and costs to society.
* We have learned a lesson from history.
Alcohol prohibition did not work, and there is no logical reason to believe that marijuana prohibition is a better idea.
What is most likely due to happen is:
1. The USA can help get through the recession faster .
It could raise over $1.2 billion a year in new tax revenues, assuming a $50-an-ounce tax, according to one analysis.
2. Can use the tax from such a bill to legalize marijuana to better enforce the more deadlier drugs on the street which are far more fatal than marijuana.
3. The tax on marijuana not only can be used to help get the more dangerous drugs off the streets but also will help to strengthen the USA’s finantial problem while opening the doors to a business designed to the helping of Medical patiance who need the medication.
4. If the USA legalizes marijuana and taxes it while having a law stating that the user must be atleast 21 to buy , posess , and/or own marijuana .
Reason for this is simple and will lessen crime in which a vast % of jails/prisons are holding people for simple
posession while others face more due to culturevation and distriutation of marijuana.
FACT: Annual American marijuana smokers who have died are 0 which is normal while their are more deaths due to DUI’s and perscription medications such as Vicodin , Morphine , and Lithium to name a few.
Can a person ever die due to smoking marijuana ?

An important question is going to become how do we tax personally cultivated marijuana so the money can flow to the public treasury and the rebuilding of America?

One approach: support a personal use and cultivation permit, for example $100 for twelve plants, with the revenue split between the Federal and State governments.

People talk a lot about “how do we tax homegrowers”. The answer is the same way we tax home brewers and home produce growers.
What I mean is comparative advantage works on an individual level, too. Why would you take the time and effort to grow something that somebody else can do more efficiently than you can? Now of course there will be home growers just like their are home brewers and home gardeners, but the number is not as great as you might think.
Alternatively, they could create a license system where you can purchase the right to home grow up to a certain amount of plants. Despite the existence of scofflaws, most people will pay for the license so that their outdoor product will be completely legal.
Regardless, it is pretty pointless to try to design the perfect system before we know exactly how the market dynamic will work. After it is legal, regulations and tax rules can be adjusted to the economics.
I love this -the potency is sooo much higher- crap. Back in the 80’s I could get weed that was so much better than today. Not that it matters,once your high it doesnt matter if you smoke more. You just get tired and nap for a while.

I do believe we are gaining ground, but we have to keep the pressure on. We all have done our part at least we all better be! So now its time to go grap that buddy or that pothead that may not be very active on this issue, may not be very active at all. We have to drag them to a computer even write the eamils and letters for them, buy the stamps and mail them, but get them to sign and address them. I truly believe that there are many many more smokers out there, we have to tap into that silent group, we have to help them and hold their hands, we have to give every voice in America a chance to be heard!

There’s a growing concern amoung Americans over accountability from government and non-government individuals with respect to incorrect information being deliberately conveyed to the public. They, the non-smoking public, really don’t know what to believe about pot and untill you smoked pot, you didn’t either. So the level of damage from misinformation can be measured and anyone making such a public statement should simply be accountable for their actions.
People have died in my life time that could have been saved with medicinal marijuana products like hemp oil, the cancer cure.

Thank you… I have seen the sethgroup.org study and was going to ask about that one too. It just amazes me that our Government still can’t get theri heads around the medical uses. I’m all for full legalization, but know that this will be a long battle… but to continue to undermine the definaitions that they created themselves is BS.
I actually thought about try to get on the ballot this year to try to replace Delegate G. Manoli Loupassi (R-Richmond) since it looks like he is running unopposed. This guy introduced a bill last year to increase penalties for marijuana possession. He wanted to make it a felony if your caugt with more than a oz. coming into the State of Virginia. This would mean if you were caught coming from DC (cause you worked there) back to Arlington (where you lived) you could face a felony conviction for simple possession. If I had more than a couple more weeks (to gather signatures) and could figure out how I would be able to support my family from the meger $18K salary I’d at least try. We’re in a heavily Republican sector (Eric Cantor is my Federal Representative) so I doubt it would even matter.
I really started looking into this too late, so next time round I’m going to try to be more prepared.
