According to a recent poll conducted by Hamilton Campaigns on behalf of People United for Medical Marijuana, 
70% of Florida voters support a plan to mend the state constitution to allow the medical use of marijuana.
Those are great numbers, but analysts say that this level of support could actually have an impact on the gubernatorial race in Florida if it makes the ballot in 2014!
From the Miami Herald:
“Supporters of the proposed amendment are less certain to cast ballots in the 2014 governor’s race,” David Beattie, Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson’s pollster, wrote in an analysis of the poll of 600 registered voters taken Jan. 30-Feb. 3 by his firm, Hamilton Campaigns.
If it made the ballot, the measure would draw even more attention to Florida’s nationally watched 2014 election in which Gov. Rick Scott will fight for his political life.
“The proposal to allow the medical use of marijuana could provide a message contrast in the Governor’s race,” Beattie wrote, “heightening its effectiveness as a turnout mechanism.”
Politicians should start to take notice of the effect marijuana bills can have on elections. As popular support for marijuana reform grows, so will the electoral chances of candidates that get in front of this issue.
Texas and Florida governor elections will be very interesting in 2014.
Yes, marijuana may make what at first may seem to be strange bedfellows for some politicians. But when support for medical marijuana is drawing polling numbers from 60% up and national support for outright legalization is at the halfway mark, with two states legalized and more coming, the politics of marijuana are on a very slippery slope. The powers that be need to start worrying that they will soon become the powers that were if they don’t get on the right side of this issue.
A particularly confounding problem are states like Illinois, where the Democratic Party has unassailable majorities in state gov’t and the polls tell us there is majority support for outright legalization, as well as medical use, but stone-age legislators can’t manage to pass even decriminalization. It’s time to replace some folks if they don’t start better representing the will of the people.
And the Republicans have their own examples of bad apples, places where politicians howl about protecting freedom and smashing the oppression of the government, but whop see some sick people who need good medicine as criminals that need to be crushed with the full weight of gov’t repression. How Right is that?
Really, the American people do support freedom, but politicians from both parties stand in the way. Make sure anyone you support politically supports YOU! Do not let them off the hook, bring it up at every event or press op. Put them on the spot and force them to defend what most of us now find offensive. Better yet, run yourself. Most of the political class in the US have no clothes, so if you’re someone smart enough to keep you pants on and give the people what they really want, you should be in office, not those bums.
